Abstract

21st century learning requires strategies that focus not only on academic achievement, but also on students' social and emotional development. However, practices in elementary schools are still dominated by conventional methods that make students passive and unmotivated. This study aims to analyze the effect of the Joyful Learning approach through the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model on the social-emotional development of fifth-grade students. The study used a One Group Pretest–Posttest design with 22 students as subjects. A Likert scale observation instrument was used to assess aspects of collaboration, communication, empathy, emotional control, independence, responsibility, and positive relationships. The results showed a significant increase in social-emotional scores, from a pretest average of 2.59 to 3.77 on the posttest. The variation in scores also decreased, indicating uniform development among students. These findings prove that TGT-based joyful learning is effective in creating enjoyable, interactive learning and optimizing the social-emotional development of elementary school students..

Abstract

A low literacy culture among Indonesian elementary students severely hampers reading comprehension and science learning outcomes in the Integrated Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) subject under the Merdeka Curriculum. This descriptive qualitative study, using naturalistic inquiry, examines the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) in fourth-grade IPAS learning at SD Negeri Mutihan, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The main aim was to describe GLS practices, identify supporting/inhibiting factors, and formulate teacher strategies addressing literacy barriers. Purposive sampling included one principal, one fourth-grade teacher, and five students representing diverse reading abilities. Data were collected through classroom observations (3 sessions), semi-structured interviews (60-90 minutes each), and documentation analysis (lesson plans, literacy records). Interactive qualitative analysis followed Miles & Huberman's model: data reduction (coding), display (thematic matrices), and conclusion drawing (pattern verification). Triangulation ensured credibility via source, method, and time comparisons. Key findings revealed: (1) systematic 15-minute reading routines and contextual IPAS texts integration; (2) reading corners utilization despite gadget distractions; (3) low student motivation as the primary barrier countered by teacher-led creative literacy activities; (4) policy-teacher-family synergy essential for sustainability. Schools should prioritize literacy-rich IPAS environments through teacher training, parental engagement programs, and diverse science reading materials to enhance outcomes of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This study addresses the need for innovative learning media to enhance elementary school students’ critical reasoning skills in IPAS (Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial) learning. The objectives of this research were: (1) to develop a Deep Learning–based educational game media called PETA SITAYA integrated with the Tri-Nga concept; (2) to determine the feasibility of the developed instruments and product; and (3) to examine the effect of the media on improving students’ critical reasoning skills. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects included a limited trial involving 24 students and a wider trial consisting of 29 students in the control class and 29 students in the experimental class. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, expert validation sheets, teacher response questionnaires, and critical reasoning tests in the form of pretest and posttest. The instrument validity test showed 15 valid items (r-count ≥ 0.4044) with a reliability coefficient (Cronbach’s Alpha) of 0.704. Since the data were not normally distributed, nonparametric tests were applied. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank test indicated significant differences between pretest and posttest scores in both classes (Sig. 0.000). The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control classes (Sig. 0.000), with the experimental class obtaining a higher mean rank. The findings conclude that the Deep Learning–based PETA SITAYA media integrated with Tri-Nga significantly improves students’ critical reasoning skills in IPAS learning.
