Abstract

Gastritis, defined as inflammation of the stomach lining, can arise from various factors, including Helicobacter pylori infection, stress, poor dietary habits, and the use of certain medications. Medical students represent a population particularly susceptible to gastritis due to high academic pressure, irregular eating patterns, and smoking habits. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for gastritis among medical students at Prima Indonesia University. This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 123 medical students. Data were collected through questionnaires, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 27. The majority of the study subjects were 21 years old (61.8%) and female (74.8%). Irregular eating habits (82.1%), coffee consumption (74%), and academic stress (79.7%) were prevalent among the subjects. More than half of the subjects had a history of gastritis (57.7%). The risk factors significantly associated with gastritis included female sex (OR=2.362; 95% CI: 1.030-5.414), irregular eating patterns (OR=3.707; 95% CI: 1.385-9.918), coffee consumption (OR=2.569; 95% CI: 1.126-5.861), and academic stress (OR=3.062; 95% CI: 1.227-7.638). Age did not significantly affect the risk of gastritis. Females were found to be more susceptible to gastritis than males, possibly due to hormonal influences and lifestyle factors. Irregular eating patterns and coffee consumption increased the risk of gastritis; however, smoking habits did not show a significant association. Academic stress was identified as an important risk factor, as it can increase gastric acid production. The risk factors significantly associated with gastritis among medical students were female sex, irregular eating patterns, coffee consumption, and academic stress.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a risk in families, especially for those with children with special needs. An inappropriate response to the impact of the pandemic has the potential to make the existing condition worse. The implementation of social restrictions causes all activities to be carried out at home, both working and studying. The positive thing is that parents have more time to take care of their children. However, there are also parents who complain of fatigue and find it difficult, especially those who have children with special needs such as autism. The closure of treatment centers such as speech therapy and physical and social skills has an impact on the development of their basic skills. This is a challenge for parents in raising them in the current situation. The aim of this study was to understand the influence of resilience towards parenting stress on mothers of children with autism disorder in the COVID-19 pandemic. The research design used was cross-sectional. The population in this study were mothers of a child with autism disorder who attended the Pembina Special School in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The sampling technique used was total sampling. Linear regression analysis was used in the study. The study result showed p-value 0.023 < 0.05, which means that there is an influence on the level of resilience with parenting stress experienced by mothers who have children with autism disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic. The resilience level of mothers was at a moderate level, although mothers’ parenting stress was low. Parenting guidance and assistance for children with autism disorder needs to be done. This aims to improve coping strategies and family resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Bidara (Ziziphus mauritiana Lam.) or Indian jujube or ber is one Indonesian endemic plant which widely used as a traditional remedy in Indonesia and other Asian countries. Bidara leaves are commonly used as a remedy for diarrhea, liver diseases, and diabetes. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of bidara leaves (Z. mauritiana Lam.) on alloxan-induced male Wistar strain rat’s (Rattus norvegicus) liver. This is an experimental study with a randomized pretest-posttest with a control group design. This study involved 24 male Wistar strain rats (R. norvegicus) which were divided into 6 separate groups induced with alloxan and each group received a different intervention accordingly. Data in this study shows that ethanol extract of bidara leaves contains alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, and glycoside compounds. This study also found that ethanol extract of bidara leaves at doses as low as 150 mg/kgBW managed to decrease the blood glucose, SGOT, and SGPT levels better than negative control and as effective as metformin. Escalation of SOD activity was also found to be directly proportional to dose increase, however, the highest concentration of MDA was also found in the highest dose of ethanol extract of bidara leaves. It can be concluded that ethanol extract from bidara leaves has anti-hyperglycemic (p<0.001) and hepatoprotective (p<0.05) effects, but the antioxidant properties cannot be determined according to this study’s data.

Abstract

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and celery (Apium graveolens L.) are well-known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and they have been traditionally used to treat hair loss. However, scientific evidence regarding their effectiveness in stimulating hair growth is still limited. This study aims to evaluate the effects of ginger and celery extracts on hair growth in Wistar rats, focusing on growth onset, duration, regrowth, and potential inflammatory effects on the skin. The research method used a total of 25 Wistar rats randomly divided into five groups: control (paraffin), standard (minoxidil), ginger extract, celery extract, and a combination of ginger and celery extracts. Each extract was administered at a dosage of 20 mg/ml. The study monitored the onset, duration, and regrowth scores of hair growth. Histological examinations were performed to assess hair follicle density and inflammation levels. Phytochemical analyses of the extracts were conducted to identify the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids. The research results show that phytochemical analysis revealed that ginger contains flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, and steroids/triterpenoids, while celery contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids/triterpenoids. The analysis showed no significant differences in hair growth onset, duration, or regrowth scores between the treatment groups and the control group. Histological analysis indicated that the average number of hairs ranged from 4 to 10 per field of view, with the highest count observed in the ginger extract group and the lowest in the celery extract group. Most slides showed light or no inflammation. The conclusion that the tested dosage, ginger and celery extracts did not have a significant impact on the onset, duration, or regrowth of hair in Wistar rats and showed minimal inflammatory responses. Although these extracts contain phytochemicals with known biological activity, they did not demonstrate significant effects on hair growth at the given dosage. Further research with different dosages and compounds is necessary to explore their full potential for hair growth and skin health.
