Abstract

Background: Obstetric danger signs are an important indicator that pregnant women need to recognize to prevent complications and reduce maternal mortality. This study aims to analyze the determinants of knowledge about obstetric danger signs in pregnant women, with a special focus on the role of family function as measured by the family APGAR instrument. Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 48 pregnant women who visited the Padang Bulan Community Health Center, Medan, during August-September 2024. The dependent variable is the level of knowledge about obstetric danger signs. Independent variables were age, education level, employment status, number of pregnancies (parity), income, and family function (APGAR score). Data collection was conducted using questionnaires on obstetric danger signs and family APGAR instruments. Data analysis included univariate, bivariate (Chi-Square), and multivariate (logistic regression) analysis. Results: The majority of subjects (72.9%) had good knowledge of obstetric danger signs. Bivariate analysis showed that education level (p=0.008) and family function (p=0.005) had a significant relationship with knowledge level, while age, employment status, parity, and income showed no significant relationship. Multivariate analysis confirmed that highly functional family function (OR= 10.47; 95% CI= 1.56 to 70.40; p =0.016) and higher education levels (OR= 6.83; 95% CI= 1.31 to 35.61; p = 0.023) were significant independent predictors for good knowledge of obstetric danger signs. Conclusion: Family function and education level are the main determinants of pregnant women's knowledge about obstetric danger signs. Maternal health education programs need to consider family involvement and pay special attention to pregnant women with low levels of education to improve understanding of obstetric danger signs, which can ultimately contribute to a decrease in maternal morbidity and mortality rates.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insulin deficiency, insulin resistance, or both. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gelagah stem extract (Saccharum spontaneum L.) on blood glucose levels in male Sprague-Dawley rats induced with alloxan. Experimental rats were divided into six groups: a normal control group, a negative control group (administered 100 mg/kg body weight alloxan), a positive control group (administered 5 mg/kg body weight glibenclamide), and three treatment groups administered gelagah stem extract at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight. Results showed that all doses of gelagah stem extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Statistical analysis (Post hoc LSD) confirmed that the decrease in blood glucose levels was significantly different between the treatment groups and the negative control group (p < 0.05).

Abstract

Elevated total cholesterol levels are medically termed as hypercholesterolemia. Breadfruit leaves are recognized for their health benefits owing to the presence of secondary metabolites. This study aimed to investigate the effect of breadfruit leaf extract (Artocarpus altilis) on total cholesterol levels in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) and assess its antioxidant potential. Two control groups were established: negative control (1% Na-CMC) and positive control (simvastatin). The three treatment groups were administered different doses of the breadfruit leaf extract (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight). Each group consisted of five rats. The results indicated that 400 mg/kg body weight of breadfruit leaf extract significantly reduced total cholesterol levels in rats by 29.27% (p<0.05). The antioxidant activity of breadfruit leaf extract was evaluated using the DPPH method at concentrations of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 μg/ml. The maximum wavelength used was 516 nm, and the absorbance was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The linear regression equation obtained for breadfruit leaf extract was Y = 0.1171x + 35.76, with an IC50 value of 121.605 μg/ml, indicating moderate antioxidant activity. In contrast, the linear regression equation for vitamin C was Y = 0.6378x + 26.083, with an IC50 value of 37.499 μg/ml, indicating a very strong antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Gastritis, defined as inflammation of the stomach lining, can arise from various factors, including Helicobacter pylori infection, stress, poor dietary habits, and the use of certain medications. Medical students represent a population particularly susceptible to gastritis due to high academic pressure, irregular eating patterns, and smoking habits. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors for gastritis among medical students at Prima Indonesia University. This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 123 medical students. Data were collected through questionnaires, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 27. The majority of the study subjects were 21 years old (61.8%) and female (74.8%). Irregular eating habits (82.1%), coffee consumption (74%), and academic stress (79.7%) were prevalent among the subjects. More than half of the subjects had a history of gastritis (57.7%). The risk factors significantly associated with gastritis included female sex (OR=2.362; 95% CI: 1.030-5.414), irregular eating patterns (OR=3.707; 95% CI: 1.385-9.918), coffee consumption (OR=2.569; 95% CI: 1.126-5.861), and academic stress (OR=3.062; 95% CI: 1.227-7.638). Age did not significantly affect the risk of gastritis. Females were found to be more susceptible to gastritis than males, possibly due to hormonal influences and lifestyle factors. Irregular eating patterns and coffee consumption increased the risk of gastritis; however, smoking habits did not show a significant association. Academic stress was identified as an important risk factor, as it can increase gastric acid production. The risk factors significantly associated with gastritis among medical students were female sex, irregular eating patterns, coffee consumption, and academic stress.

Abstract

Hypertension causes high morbidity (sickness) and mortality (death). Hypertension occurs as a result of interactions and various risk factors that a person has. Multiple studies have linked various risk factors to the emergence of hypertension. The research aims to determine the Essential Hypertension strategy through a risk factor approach at the Asy-Asyifa Clinic. The research design used was an analytical study with a case-control study design by selecting cases who suffered from essential hypertension and controls who did not suffer from essential hypertension. Primary data collection was carried out directly by researchers using research instruments in the form of questionnaires. In fact, the results of this study determined that age is related to the incidence of hypertension. The higher the age group, the more often the incidence of hypertension. The results of the Chi-Square statistical test with a value of p = 0.06 mean that there is a significant relationship between obesity and the incidence of hypertension. The results of the Chi-Square statistical test with a value of p = 0.048 mean that there is an essential relationship between people who smoke and the incidence of hypertension. In this study, there was no significant relationship with the Chi-Square statistical test with a value of p = 0.020, meaning that there was a meaningful relationship between people who consumed much salt and the incidence of hypertension. The variables influencing essential hypertension are obesity, salt consumption, and age. The dominant variable that influences essential hypertension at the Asy-Asyifa Clinic in Medan is the obesity variable. Regular exercise and a balanced diet are crucial to maintaining a healthy weight.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus induces hyperglycemia. Low insulin production causes insulin resistance and altered protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism. Much research has shown that traditional herbal treatments can treat diabetes. Diabetes increases free radical production. Secondary metabolic plants include antioxidants that treat extreme illnesses like diabetes. This study examines the efficacy of ethanol extract from red betel leaves (EERBL) in lowering blood glucose levels in vivo, the optimal dose, secondary metabolite content based on phytochemical screening, and alloxan-induced pancreatic hyperglycemia histopathology. Mouse. Six 20-30 gram groups of mice were treated. Group III got 0.65 mg/kgBW glibenclamide, and Groups IV, V, and VI received oral gavage EERBL 100, 300, and 500 mg/kgBW. Group I was in standard control without alloxan, and Group II was in alloxan control. Hyperglycemic mice received 150 mg/kg BW intraperitoneal alloxan. Red betel is 96% ethanol-macerated. Oral red betel leaf extract was given for 21 days to monitor blood glucose and pancreatic function. Splitting red betel leaves to male mice significantly altered blood glucose and pancreatic histology. Red betel goes low cuts close and pancreatic histology by 58.4%. Blood glucose readings were Kruskal-Wallis significant at 0.004 or 0.05. Red betel leaf extract reduced blood glucose and enhanced pancreatic histology in male mice.
