Abstract

Biology teaching plays a vital role in developing students’ critical and analytical thinking skills, as well as their problem-solving abilities. However, the implementation of innovative teaching models and the use of teaching aids in schools still face various challenges. This study aims to analyse the application of biology teaching models, the use of teaching aids, and the challenges faced by teachers at MAN 1 Medan. This study employs a qualitative approach of a descriptive nature. Data collection was carried out through structured interviews with biology teachers as the main informants, supported by documentation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, grouping, data presentation, and drawing conclusions, with validity testing using triangulation. The research findings indicate that teachers have implemented various teaching models such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), inquiry-based learning and group discussions, and have consistently used question-and-answer sessions to assess pupils’ understanding. The teaching aids used include PowerPoint presentations, educational videos, visual aids such as human torsos and skeletons, and mobilebased quizzes. However, the implementation of learning has not been optimal due to limited facilities, low student engagement, differences in ability and motivation to learn, and limited learning time. Teachers have attempted to overcome these constraints through a variety of methods, the provision of motivation, and the use ofbavailable media. Therefore, improvements to facilities and the development of technology-based learning innovations are required to enhance the effectiveness of biology learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the needs for interactive multimedia-based learning media to support Biology learning at SMA Negeri 18 Medan. Biology learning often faces challenges due to abstract and complex concepts such as genetics and physiological systems, which are difficult for students to visualize using conventional media. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with Biology teachers, utilizing an instrument that covers three main aspects: the implementation of learning models, the use of learning media, and learning constraints. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that Biology learning at SMA Negeri 18 Medan still relies heavily on printed books and static media, while the use of complex digital media remains suboptimal due to technical issues and time constraints. Students face significant difficulties in understanding microscopic and dynamic concepts, leading to uneven engagement. The findings highlight an urgent need for interactive multimedia that integrates 3D visualization, virtual laboratories, and gamification to bridge the gap between abstract concepts and concrete understanding, accommodate diverse learning styles, and increase student motivation and participation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of observer clothing color on the responses and behavior of migratory birds during birdwatching activities. The method used was experimental field observation conducted in the Batubara Mangrove Park area, Historical Beach, by comparing two categories of clothing colors, namely bright colors and neutral colors. The research subjects focused on the migratory bird species Numenius madagascariensis, which is known to be sensitive to changes in the visual environment. Data were collected through direct observation of bird behavior, such as flight frequency, feeding activity, movement, and alertness level. The results showed that the use of bright clothing colors increased the birds' alertness response, characterized by increased frequency of movement and decreased foraging activity. Conversely, the use of neutral colors tended not to cause significant disturbance so that bird behavior remained natural. These findings confirm that clothing color selection is an important part of birdwatching ethics to minimize disturbance to animals and support research and conservation effectiveness.

Abstract

The coastal area of ??Bagan Percut, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, is an important stopover location for migratory birds, vulnerable to human disturbance. This study aims to analyze the effect of human presence on the behavioral responses of migratory birds in the context of wildlife observation ethics. The method used was descriptive quantitative through field observations with varying observation distances of 10 meters, 20 meters, and 30 meters. Observed parameters included feeding activity, vigilance behavior, location changes, and flight responses. The results showed that at a distance of 10 meters, birds experienced significant disturbance in the form of cessation of feeding activity and increased vigilance. At a distance of 20 meters, disturbances still occurred but with lower intensity. Meanwhile, at a distance of 30 meters or more, most birds showed no significant behavioral changes. These findings confirm that an observation distance of at least 30 meters is effective in minimizing disturbance, thus it can be used as a guideline for ethical observation practices and support migratory bird conservation efforts in coastal habitats.

Abstract

The development of biotechnology through plant tissue culture techniques provides significant benefits in producing superior, disease-free seedlings quickly. However, the use of modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) media also produces laboratory waste that has the potential to pollute the environment if not managed properly. This study aims to examine the management of tissue culture media waste, identify potential risks, and analyze the application of bioethical principles in its management. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation and documentation in the Tissue Culture Laboratory. The results show that contaminated culture media waste is still disposed of directly without undergoing a sterilization process and waste separation according to standards. This condition has the potential to cause negative impacts such as the spread of microorganisms, environmental pollution due to chemical content, and the risk of health problems. From a bioethical perspective, this practice does not fully implement the principles of non-maleficence, beneficence, and responsibility. Therefore, the implementation of waste management in accordance with bioethical principles through sterilization, waste separation, and sustainable management is needed to support safe and responsible laboratory practices.
