Abstract

Despite growing recognition of the importance of contextual literacy media, there remains a significant gap in the availability of culturally grounded picture storybooks tailored to students in newly developed regions such as the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) area. This study aims to analyze the feasibility of the picture storybook “Langkah Kecil Eka di Ibu Kota Nusantara” as a learning medium to improve reading comprehension skills among fourth-grade elementary school students. A qualitative descriptive method was employed. Data were collected through passive participatory observation, in-depth interviews with nine participants (two fourth-grade teachers, one school principal, and six fourth-grade students), and documentation at SD Negeri 006 Sepaku, Sepaku District, North Penajam Paser Regency. Analysis was conducted systematically on four components content/material, language, illustration, and curriculum alignment  using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), with data validity ensured through source and technical triangulation. The findings indicate that the book demonstrates high alignment with the Indonesian Language Learning Achievement for Phase B in the Merdeka Curriculum, incorporates contextual local wisdom values of IKN, and presents illustrations that support students’ inferential comprehension. This study contributes an evidence-based feasibility analysis of a locally situated literacy medium, offering a replicable framework for developing culturally responsive reading materials in under-resourced and newly established educational contexts across Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of local wisdom-based instructional materials in nonfiction reading comprehension for elementary school students using Barrett’s Taxonomy as a theoretical framework. A systematic literature review was conducted on 20 empirical studies published between 2021 and 2025 that explore culturally responsive teaching materials in reading instruction, focusing on their development, implementation, and effectiveness in enhancing comprehension skills. The findings indicate that local wisdom-based materials consistently improve students’ literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension, while also strengthening cultural identity, motivation, and engagement by connecting learning content to students’ real-life cultural contexts. Barrett’s Taxonomy supports this process by providing a structured progression from basic understanding to higher-order critical thinking, making reading instruction more systematic and meaningful. However, most existing studies still emphasize narrative texts and show limited explicit application of Barrett’s Taxonomy in nonfiction contexts, indicating a significant research gap. Additionally, variations in implementation and limited contextual diversity suggest the need for broader investigation. In conclusion, the integration of local wisdom-based materials with Barrett’s Taxonomy is an effective approach to enhancing nonfiction reading comprehension in elementary education, as it combines cultural relevance with structured cognitive development. Nevertheless, further research is needed to expand its application across different text types, improve instructional design models, and examine its long-term impact on students’ comprehension abilities and cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of a digital library featuring illustrated stories with disaster mitigation content in enhancing reading literacy and environmental care among elementary students. The programme addressed the issue of a lack of individuals possessing adequate reading and writing skills, while concurrently emphasising the significance of imparting environmental education to children from an early age, a particularly salient consideration in regions such as Indonesia, where there is a high incidence of natural disasters. The present study employed a quantitative one-group pretest–posttest design, with 30 fourth-grade students (aged 9–10 years) being selected through purposive sampling. The instruments comprised a reading literacy test and a Likert-scale measure of attitudes towards environmental care. Due to non-normal distribution, data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed significant improvements in reading literacy and environmental care attitudes, with all students achieving positive ranks. There were no declines recorded, and positive effects were evident in terms of students’ enthusiasm, active participation, and ability to connect stories with real-life disaster experiences. These results show that combining digital illustrated stories with disaster mitigation content is an effective way to support literacy development, character education and environmental awareness.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to map how the educational philosophies of constructivism, progressivism, pragmatism, and humanism shape pedagogical paradigms and teaching practices in elementary science education. It also seeks to develop an integrative conceptual framework that supports meaningful and student-centered science learning in 21st-century primary education. Methodology: This study employed a qualitative Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following PRISMA guidelines. Articles were retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases covering the 2015–2025 period. Ten peer-reviewed articles were selected after identification, screening, and eligibility stages. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and narrative synthesis supported by a structured data extraction instrument. Main Findings: Constructivism promotes active knowledge construction through inquiry-based approaches such as CIBSE. Progressivism emphasizes student-centered and adaptive learning environments supported by digital technology. Pragmatism integrates cultural and empirical knowledge through experiential reflection, while humanism supports holistic development by addressing affective and social dimensions. Effective science learning emerges from the interaction of these traditions rather than reliance on a single paradigm. Novelty/Originality of this study: The study synthesizes four philosophical traditions into a unified Integrative Philosophical Framework, which has rarely been explored in previous SLR studies. The findings encourage educators to adopt a reflective multi-philosophical approach. However, the review is limited by its small sample size and reliance on predominantly English-language sources. Future research should involve longitudinal mixed-methods studies across a broader range of educational contexts.

Abstract

Reading motivation is a crucial factor in learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), particularly in diaspora contexts that face linguistic and cultural challenges. BIPA reading instruction in Mindanao still tends to be linguistically oriented and has not systematically integrated glocalization contexts. This study began with the need to develop a glocalization-based “motivate” phase within the MAGANDA (Motivation, Gleefulness, and Appreciation) learning model to strengthen engagement and reading readiness among diaspora students. This study aims to describe the practice of glocalization in the “motivate” phase in the development of the MAGANDA learning model and its contribution to the reading motivation of BIPA diaspora students in Mindanao. The study used a qualitative research and development (R&D) approach with the 4D model framework. The study focused on the design stage, using a descriptive strategy. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis with teachers, students, and evaluators in the BIPA diaspora community in Mindanao. Data analysis used thematic analysis with source triangulation. The study's results reveal two main findings. First, the practice of glocalization in the “motivate” phase is carried out through the integration of children's songs as cultural bridging, which has been proven to significantly reduce affective barriers (anxiety) and build a sense of national identity closeness. This strategy activates local cultural schemata while introducing the Indonesian language contextually. Second, the “motivate” phase increases student engagement, recognition, and self-efficacy before entering reading activities. Responses from students, teachers, and evaluators indicate increased self-confidence and readiness to learn compared to conventional learning. The integration of glocalization in the initial phase of learning serves as a strategy for managing affective factors in second language acquisition. Thus, the “motivate” phase in the MAGANDA model is not simply an introduction to learning but also serves as a space for initial meaning construction that strengthens the identity, psychological comfort, and cognitive readiness of diaspora students in reading BIPA texts.

Abstract

This study examines the role of sequential picture media in improving short story writing skills of fourth-grade elementary school students at SD Negeri 028 Penajam through a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews with the class teacher and selected students. Analysis employed Miles & Huberman's interactive model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through source and method triangulation. Findings indicate that: (1) conventional writing instruction lacked adequate visual support, creating barriers to student creativity; (2) sequential picture media effectively served as an imagination trigger by providing concrete starting points for story development; (3) the media significantly improved writing quality in terms of story structure, descriptive vocabulary, paragraph coherence, and character development; and (4) it strongly enhanced and sustained student learning motivation. The study recommends systematic, contextual, and high-quality development of sequential picture media as an integral component of Indonesian language learning strategies in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language barriers experienced by Indonesian diaspora children in Mindanao in learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) from a neuropsycholinguistic perspective by identifying the forms of decline in Indonesian language competence and the neurocognitive factors influenced by a multilingual environment. The study employed a qualitative approach using a Research and Development (R&D) design based on the 4D model, with a particular focus on the define stage. The research subjects consisted of seven students and two teachers at the Indonesian School of Davao, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis and were analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the language barriers experienced by the participants included difficulties in syntactic structure, tense usage, language registers, and code-mixing caused by interference from Visayan and Tagalog. Contrastive analysis revealed that differences in sentence patterns (S-V-O vs. V-S-O) and grammatical systems were the primary sources of errors. From a neuropsycholinguistic perspective, these barriers were associated with limitations in working memory, attention, and lexical representation, which were influenced by limited exposure to the Indonesian language. The findings also showed that the students’ receptive and expressive language abilities remained limited, particularly in command comprehension, vocabulary mastery, and verbal memory. This study contributes theoretically to the enrichment of neuropsycholinguistic studies in the context of diaspora children and language learning. Practically, the findings provide a foundation for designing BIPA instruction that is adaptive, contextual, and aligned with learners’ neurocognitive characteristics.
