Abstract

This study analyzed teacher talk in Indonesian EFL classroom. The research aimed to investigate the predominant speech act classification employed by the teacher, the factors influencing an EFL teacher using the predominant speech acts, as well as its impact on instructional activities. It applied a qualitative case study involving one English teacher as the participant. The study used Searle’s taxonomy of speech act classification as the instrument. Data were collected from the recording of classroom observation and interview. The finding of this study revealed the frequency of each classification found as the following: 69,4% for directives, 19,4% for representatives, 8,3% for expressives, and 2,8% for commissives. Directive speech acts were the most frequent used by the teacher in the classroom. The study further suggested that creating better classroom management and guiding the students became teacher’s reasons using directive speech act which potentially impacted instructional activities by influencing students’ behavior to be more attentive and engaged, making class operation smoothly, and creating productive and meaningful learning experiences. The results contribute greater insights to the dynamics of teacher-student interactions and may direct the development of effective pedagogical strategies to be used in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

The SARS-CoVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on various sectors, prompting countries worldwide to implement measures like social restrictions. PT. Energi Makmur, a national Engineering Procurement and Construction Company, adapted to these changes during the pandemic, facing numerous challenges while striving to deliver products to clients within specified timelines. This final project aims to create a novel business process for the Front End Engineering Design phase that can effectively operate under social restrictions, removing the need for physical coordination typically conducted in an office setting. Using the Design for Six Sigma framework, incorporating Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, and Verify steps, this project seeks to maintain internal approval timelines akin to those in normal conditions. Primary data collection involves interviews, group discussions, and surveys, while secondary data is gathered through internal document review. To identify root causes, methods like the current reality tree and the 8 waste theory are employed, while the FMEA method is utilized to prioritize solutions, and the Kano model verifies the design. Nine proposed solutions emerged from the design phase, with seven slated for implementation in upcoming projects after the verification stage.

Abstract

This research aims to explore in-depth the formation process of the Abbasid Dynasty in the history of Islamic civilization. This qualitative study employs a historical approach to understand two key methods in this process. Data collection techniques involve literature reviews and historical document analysis, while data analysis is conducted through content analysis. Data validation is carried out by cross-referencing various historical sources to ensure the accuracy of the information. The research findings indicate that the Abbasid Dynasty used propaganda through secret networks to gain public support and garner sympathy from various segments of society, as well as to build military strength to challenge and overthrow the Umayyad power. This study reveals the crucial role of political communication and military strategy in the formation and stability of the government, as well as its impact on the political and social dynamics of the society at that time. Thus, this research provides a comprehensive insight into the formation process of the Abbasid Dynasty and its impact on Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Nowadays kinin is the most effective antimalarial drug and its used as an alternative in malaria treatment. However, toxicity of quinine restrict its use as an antimalarial drug. Lipophilicity and long half-life (t½) of quinine that reach 10-20 hours are responsible for its toxicity. The aim of this research is to obtain more polar quinine derivatives by means of hydrogen peroxide reactions to reduce the toxicity. The reactions using hydrogen peroxyde is performed analogously to the procedures reported in the literature. Extract of pure anhydrous kinin is purified in coloumn chromatography followed by structure elucidation. Synthetic product is tested in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum. The characterization of reaction products is performed with proton (1H) and carbon 13 (13C) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It showed that the reaction using reagents led to epoxidation of vinyl substituents of chinuclidine ring with 61,08% yields. Antimalarial test against Plasmodium falciparum obtained 1.250-2.500 μg/mL of IC50 value. The IC50 values indicated that the synthesis products were not potential for malaria treatment.
