Abstract

Social media has become a central part of daily life in Indonesia, yet the rapid growth of digital platforms presents challenges in analyzing large, unstructured user data. Responding to this issue, this study aims to cluster the behavioral patterns of Indonesian social media users using the K-Means Clustering algorithm, a data mining technique for unsupervised segmentation. Employing a quantitative approach, data were collected through an online questionnaire from 553 respondents aged 15–80 years. After data cleaning, normalization, and feature encoding, the optimal number of clusters was determined using the Elbow method and Silhouette Coefficient, resulting in two clusters with a Silhouette score of 0.177. Cluster 0 (303 respondents) represents highly interactive multi-platform users active on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for 3–6 hours daily, showing strong interest in entertainment and motivational content. Cluster 1 (250 respondents) includes more passive users, mainly on Instagram and TikTok, spending 3–4 hours per day with moderate engagement and a preference for motivational and self-development content. The findings demonstrate that K-Means Clustering effectively maps user behavior based on platform use, content preferences, motivations, and interaction patterns. The implications of these findings suggest that digital communication strategies need to be tailored to the characteristics of each user cluster so that the messages and content conveyed are more effective.

Abstract

Relevance for Contemporary Islamic Legal Reform. These two approaches offer inspiration and important lessons for contemporary Islamic legal reform efforts, particularly in the Islamic world facing a deadlock between textual conservatism and secular modernism. First, Opening Space for Modern and Democratic Ijtihad. The idea of rational and collective ijtihad they espouse is crucial for opening up space for Islamic law that is relevant to modern, democratic, and multicultural life. Second, Bridging Islam and the Modern State. Their thinking helps address the tension between Islam and the state, between sharia and the constitution. Both demonstrate that Islam can exist within the framework of a nation-state (Yudian) or a secular state (Ramadan) without losing its values. Third, Instilling Universal Islamic Ethics. Legal reform is not simply a matter of changing the wording of fatwas; it must also address the ethos and universal values of Islam. This is crucial for making Islam a blessing for all the worlds in the global community. Fourth, Inspiration for the Young Intellectual Generation. Their thinking serves as a starting point for the younger generation of Muslims to develop an Islam that is open, reflective, and actively involved in building civilization.

Abstract

This study examines the realization of request speech acts produced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in academic contexts by considering variations in power and social distance. Requests constitute face-threatening acts (FTAs); therefore, their realization is strongly influenced by social and relational factors. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design supported by frequency counts and percentage distributions to quantify strategy use across situational configurations. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) involving 34 undergraduate students from different semesters of the English Education Study Program at STKIP Taman Siswa Bima. The data were analysed based on request strategy classifications and mitigation devices and were interpreted through the framework of politeness theory and learner pragmatics. The findings generally indicate that conventionally indirect strategies tend to predominate in request realizations across configurations of power and social distance, though variation was observed across individual cases. In contexts characterized by asymmetrical power relations, students predominantly tended to avoid direct strategies and employed layered mitigation devices, such as apologies, politeness markers, and grounders. Meanwhile, social distance exerted a relatively consistent influence on the level of directness, as interactions with close interlocutors allowed for the use of more direct strategies. In addition, the qualitative analysis also identified recurrent patterns such as over-politeness, over-directness, and underuse of power. These tendencies are interpreted as possible reflections of local sociocultural norms and potential indications of pragmatic transfer, although pragmatic transfer was not the primary focus of the study.

Abstract

This study is intended to describe the learning innovations that teachers make during and after the emergency remote teaching in Indonesia. Distance learning that was suddenly implemented due to the Covid-19 pandemic had a broad impact on all aspects of education. It is qualitative research with steps of collecting data through observation and interviews, whether structured or unstructured, documentation, and visual materials. The data were analyzed using grounded theory.  The results showed that there were innovations in methods, development of teaching materials, and teachers-parents communication. Before the pandemic, communication between teachers and parents was mostly done only once a semester, but now teachers communicate with parents more often. Learning methods also vary by integrating various media. Media is no longer just using whiteboards or projectors, but more variations of media are used by teachers. Teaching materials are no longer only from one learning source but are obtained from more varied learning sources.
