Abstract

IPAS learning in elementary schools is still tend to be conducted conventionally, resulting in suboptimal student involvement in the learning process. This condition causes students to have difficulty understanding the concept of energy and energy transformation, which are abstract in nature. This community service activity aims to apply simple technology using banana peel waste as an alternative energy source in batteries thru STEM-based IPAS learning in elementary schools. The implementation method of the activity consists of stages such as Focus Group Discussion (FGD), socialization, learning application, as well as evaluation and mentoring. At the implementation stage, students directly practice making a simple battery from banana peels until they successfully light up an LED. Evaluation is conducted using pretests and posttests to determine the improvement in students' understanding. The results of the activity show that there was an increase in student understanding across all indicators, with an overall N-Gain value of 0.69, categorized as moderate. Simple practice-based learning can enhance student activity, learning motivation, and understanding of the concept of electrical energy and the utilization of organic waste. In addition, the application of STEM-based learning can also train students' critical thinking skills, creativity, collaboration, and environmental awareness. Thus, the utilization of banana peel waste as an alternative energy source can become an innovative contextual and interactive learning approach in elementary school IPAS education.

Abstract

Contextual learning connects instructional content with real-life experiences, promotes active participation, and fosters social interaction among students. This study aimed to analyze the effect of a contextual learning approach on elementary school students’ understanding of science concepts and social awareness. The research employed a quasi-experimental design conducted at an elementary school in Pekanbaru, involving two classes: an experimental class taught using the contextual approach and a control class taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through science concept understanding tests and social awareness questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The t-test results indicated that the significance values of post-test scores for both science concept understanding and social awareness were less than α = 0.05, leading to the rejection of H₀. This demonstrates a significant difference between the experimental and control classes at the 95% confidence level. Further analysis using N-gain scores showed that the experimental class achieved higher improvement in both science concept understanding and social awareness compared to the control class. These findings indicate that the contextual learning approach has a positive and significant influence on students’ conceptual understanding and social awareness.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of media and technology in 21st-century character-based learning in elementary schools and its relevance in supporting children's transition from kindergarten to elementary school. Using a library research design with a qualitative approach, this study examines literature from national and international journals. The findings indicate that technology integration within the Merdeka Curriculum contributes to developing 21st-century skills (4Cs: critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration) while strengthening students' character through interactive and meaningful learning. Digital platforms such as Canva prove effective in increasing student motivation and engagement, facilitating concept visualization, and fostering creativity. In the early childhood-to-elementary transition context, technology functions as an adaptive bridge supporting the shift from play-based to structured learning. Digital media enables gradual, attractive, and contextual delivery of learning materials, supporting children's school readiness including self-regulation, attention, independence, and socio-emotional adjustment. This literature review identifies three major transition barriers: cognitive overload from rapid curriculum changes, socio-emotional adjustment challenges, and limited teacher readiness in technology integration. Among various digital media strategies, gamification and visual content creation through Canva emerge as the most effective approaches, with 78% of reviewed studies reporting significant improvements in student engagement and learning motivation. The study emphasizes that successful 21st-century character-based learning depends on teachers' transformed roles as facilitators who appropriately integrate technology, apply differentiated instruction according to students' readiness, and create transition-friendly learning environments. Thus, technology use not only improves learning quality but also strengthens children's holistic readiness to enter elementary school.

Abstract

The Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach has been recognized as an effective learning model in improving elementary school students' mathematical understanding through real-life contexts. This article aims to describe the effectiveness of the RME approach in supporting Deep Learning in Data Processing material in Grade III of Elementary School. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data sources in the form of Deep Learning Implementation Plans (RPM), learning videos, and class interaction transcripts. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, documentation, and analysis of learning conversations. The results of the study indicate that the application of RME syntax, which includes orientation to contextual problems, exploration, discussion and negotiation of meaning, formalization, and reflection, is able to facilitate the three principles of Deep Learning, namely mindful, meaningful, and joyful. Students actively collect data on classmates' hobbies using tally sheets, process them into frequency tables, and present them in the form of creative pictograms. This activity encourages students to think critically, collaborate, and express their understanding visually. These findings confirm that RME based on real-life contexts can be an effective alternative in creating meaningful, enjoyable, and deep mathematics learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

Understanding fractions remains one of the major challenges in elementary mathematics education due to their abstract nature and the tendency of instruction to focus on procedural knowledge rather than conceptual understanding. Therefore, a learning approach that connects mathematical concepts with students' real-life experiences is needed. This study aims to describe the implementation of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach in fraction learning within the context of Ramadan and to examine how students construct their understanding of fractions through contextual learning activities. This study employed a qualitative method using a design research approach involving fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 05 Perawang. Learning activities were designed using Ramadan-related contexts, such as the distribution of zakat fitrah and iftar meals, as starting points for the mathematization process. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, documentation, and analysis of students’ work. The findings revealed that the Ramadan context helped students connect real-life experiences with fraction concepts, enabling them to represent, compare, and solve fraction-related problems more meaningfully. In addition, students demonstrated active engagement in discussions, problem-solving activities, and concept construction throughout the learning process. These findings suggest that the Realistic Mathematics Education approach based on the Ramadan context has the potential to serve as a contextual and meaningful learning alternative for supporting elementary students’ understanding of fractions.

Abstract

The transformation of 21st-century education demands a paradigm shift in learning from teacher-centered to student-centered learning. Critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration are among the competencies that need to be developed as part of these 21st-century competencies. However, mathematics learning in elementary schools is often oriented towards memorizing procedures, making it difficult for students to deeply understand concepts, particularly in algebra. This study aims to describe the implementation of Deep Learning-based algebra learning in developing 21st-century competencies in elementary school students. The study used a qualitative descriptive approach with 28 fifth-grade elementary school students as subjects. Data were obtained through observation, documentation, student worksheets, formative assessments, and learning reflections. The results showed that the application of Deep Learning through the stages of stimulation, concept exploration, knowledge construction, collaboration, contextual application, reflection, and learning transfer was able to improve understanding of algebra concepts and develop students' critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration competencies. Learning that links variable concepts to real-life situations helps students build more meaningful conceptual understanding. Furthermore, group discussions and reflection activities encourage students to be more active in expressing opinions, collaborating, and evaluating their thinking processes. Research findings indicate that Deep Learning-based algebra learning can be a strategy for implementing the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) to prepare students for 21st-century challenges.

Abstract

Critical reasoning ability is a fundamental competence that needs to be developed from the elementary school level, especially in mathematics learning. This article aims to describe the implementation of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach in data processing learning, specifically bar chart material, as an effort to strengthen the critical reasoning of grade 3 students at SD Negeri 109 Pekanbaru. The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data sources in the form of In-Depth Learning Plans (RPM), Student Worksheets (LKPD), and assessment documents. Data collection was conducted through analysis of learning documents and observation of learning activities. The results show that the application of RME stages—contextual problem orientation, concept exploration and discovery, discussion and negotiation, formalization and generalization, and reflection and evaluation—systematically encourages students to build conceptual understanding of bar charts through real experiences. Authentic classroom data survey contexts, such as students' favorite sports and beverages data, help concretize abstract concepts so that students are able to read, analyze, and interpret information independently. Integration of Deep Learning principles (Mindful, Meaningful, Joyful) in the RPM also supports active engagement and critical reasoning of students. These findings confirm that authentic context-based RME is an effective alternative in elementary school mathematics learning aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Mathematics learning in elementary school, especially on data processing material, is often still abstract, making it difficult for students to understand concepts meaningfully. The Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach offers a solution by placing real contexts as a starting point for learning, in line with the principles of Deep Learning that prioritizes Mindful, Meaningful, and Joyful dimensions. This article aims to describe the effectiveness of the RME approach in supporting deep learning on data processing material (frequency tables, pictograms, and bar charts) in Grade V elementary school, referring to the Deep Learning Implementation Plan (RPM) compiled based on the Merdeka Curriculum. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data sources in the form of RPM documents, learning activity designs, and pedagogical analysis of RME stage implementation in each meeting. The analysis results show that the RME approach encourages students to actively collect data from real environments, present data in various visual forms, and analyze and draw conclusions from the presented data. The RME stages which include understanding contextual problems, exploration, formalization, application, and evaluation are proven to support the achievement of deep learning objectives. Thus, integrating the RME approach into Grade V elementary school data processing learning can be an effective alternative for improving students' critical thinking and mathematical reasoning abilities.
