Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to analyse the existence of topic sentence in each paragraph in research background. A good paragraph writing must contain clear topic sentence and followed by relevant supporting details as will as optionally completed by concluding sentence. However, many writers ignore the importance of such a good structure of a pargarph writing. Therefore, the researcher was interested to analyse the existence of topic sentence in each paragraph in the research background part of skripsi written by sarjana candidates of English Education Study Program of FKIP UNTAN year 2009 until 2012. To answer the problem, the researcher applied discourse analysis method that is included in qualitative descriptive research. Based on the analysis, as the main finding, it was concluded that almost one-third paragraphs in the whole samples are left alone without any topic sentence.   Keywords: Topic Sentence, Supporting Details Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa keberadaan kalimat utama di setiap paragraph di latar belakang penelitian. Penulisan paragraf yang baik harus mengandung kalimat utama yang jelas dan diikuti oleh kalimat-kalimat penjelas yang relevan dan diselesaikan oleh kalimat penutup sebagai pilihan. Bagaimanapun, banyak penulis mengabaikan pentingnya sebuah struktur yang baik dari penulisan paragraph. Oleh karena itu, peneliti tertarik untuk menganalisa keberadaan kalimat utama dalam setiap paragraf di bagian latar belakang penelitian dari skripsi yang ditulis oleh calon-calon sarjana mahasiswa FKIP UNTAN Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris pada tahun 2009 sampai tahun 2012. Untuk menjawab masalah ini, peneliti mengaplikasikan metode analisis wacana yang termasuk penelitian deskriptif yang bersifat kualitatif. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, sebagai penemuan utama, disimpulkan bahwa hampir satu per tiga paragraf di seluruh sampel berdiri sendiri tanpa adanya kalimat topik.   Kata kunci: Kalimat Utama, Kalimat Penjelas

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the teachers’ perspective towards the use of Internet in English language teaching and learning. The subjects of this study were eight English teachers from three junior high schools in different locations. This research used case study, involves three instruments such as, demographic question, questionnaire and interview, and described triangulation data to the findings. Based on the findings, the teachers had positive perspectives in using Internet as the appropriate tool for finding the material although some of them did not use Internet. The teachers who did not use Internet stated that they did not have Internet ability because they did not well-trained in using it. Particularly, the case was caused by the teachers’ age and teaching period. Even though, they were old generations, they were interested in using Internet. In order to improve their Internet skills, they needed training. Key words: Teachers’ Perspective, English Language Teaching, Internet Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan pengalaman guru dan kepercayaan guru terhadap penggunaan media Internet dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah delapan orang guru SMP dari tiga sekolah yang berbeda. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus dengan menggunakan instrumen pertanyaan demograpik, kuisioner dan wawancara dan menjabarkan semua instrument tersebut di bagian temuan penelitian. Berdasarakan hasil penelitian, guru tersebut mempunyai pandangan yang positif terhadap penggunaan Internet sebagai media yang tepat dalam mencari materi meskipun beberapa dari guru tersebut tidak menggunakan Internet. Guru yang tidak menggunakan Internet menyatakan bahwa mereka tidak mempunyai kemampuan berinternet karena mereka tidak terlatih dengan baik dalam menggunakan Internet.hal ini disebabkan oleh faktor usia dan pengalaman mengajar. Meskipun mereka termasuk generasi tua, mereka tetap tertarik dengan penggunaan Internet. Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Internetnya, guru tersebut membutuhkan pelatihan. Abstract

Abstract: This study uses the research and development approach. The purpose of this research is to develop a Powerpoint based-instructional material for teaching speaking to the refugees at Detention Center Pontianak in getting them involved actively in speaking class by combining material, picture and animated pictures (MaPicA). In developing this product, need analysis is done in order to find the need of the students for speaking class. Based on the need analysis, a product is designed, developed and implemented to the class. The product is PowerPoint-based instructional material which consists of 91 slides, 1 slide for the cover of the product that explains about what the product is, 1 slide is to guide the user of the product, 1 slide is to display the theme of discussion and divided into 2, on the right is for theme and on the left is for pictures as well as animated pictures, 1 slide is to display audio and 1 slide is for each grammar and exercise while there are 86 slides are used for the content of the material.  The result applied to the large group shows a consistency between the first and the second try out on students’ performance. The result of second try out shows the improvement in the number of students involved in the class discussion.  Besides, this product is able to establish a clear link between the topic being discussed and its uses in the real world, moreover, the students are able to use it for their communication.  Keywords: Instructional Material, MaPicA, Speaking Actively.Abstrak: Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan penelitian dan pengembangan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengembangkan materi pembelajaran berbasis powerpoint untuk mengajar kemampuan berbicara kepada pengungsi pada rumah detensi imigrasi Pontianak sehingga mereka terlibat aktif dalam berbicara di kelas dengan menggabungkan materi, gambar dan gambar animasi (MaPicA). Dalam mengembangkan produk ini,analisis kebutuhan dilakukan untuk menemukan kebutuhan para siswa dalam melatih kemampuan berbicara mereka. Berdasarkan analisis kebutuhan tersebut produk dirancang, dikembangkan dan diimplementasikan di kelas. Produk ini adalah materi pembelajaran berbasis powerpoint yang terdiri dari 91 slide, 1 slide untuk sampul produk yang menjelaskan tentang produk ini, 1 slide adalah arahan dalam menggunakan produk ini, 1 slide untuk menampilkan tema diskusi dan dibagi menjadi 2, di sebelah kanan untuk tema dan di sebelah kiri adalah untuk gambar serta gambar animasi, 1 slide untuk tampilan audio dan 1 slide untuk setiap tata bahasa dan latihan, sementara ada 86 slide yang digunakan untuk isi materi. Dari hasil yang diuji coba pada kelompok besar, siswa menunjukkan konsistensi pada uji coba pertama dan kedua. Hasil uji coba kedua menunjukkan peningkatan jumlah siswa yang terlibat dalam diskusi di kelas. Selain itu, produk ini mampu membangun hubungan yang jelas antara topik yang sedang dibahas dan penggunaannya pada situasi yang sebenarnya, lebih dari pada itu, siswa dapat menggunakannya dalam komunikasi.  Keywords: Materi Pembelajaran, MaPicA, Berbicara Aktif.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to find out the effectiveness of Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Model in supporting students’ creativity in learning English hortatory exposition text for eleventh grade students of SMA Pontianak Academic Year 2014/2015 . This research was a quasi experimental research with non-equivalent control group design. The sample used  was purposive sampling where XI MIA 1 as the expreimental class and XI MIA 3 as the control class. Questionnaire was the tool to investigate the level of students’ creativity in learning hortatory exposition text. The questionnaire was administered as measurement before and after the treatment. The calculation of questionnaire score was based on Likert’s Scale. The calculation of effect size shows the number of 2.06 (>1.00) which is categorized as “strong”. The data revealed that the students in experimental class got more opportunities for sharing their ideas in the IBL classroom and those opportunities resulted to the improvement of students’ creativity.  Keywords:  IBL, Creativity, Hortatory Exposition Text. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kefektivan Inquiry Based Learning Model (IBL) dalam mendorong kreativitas siswa dalam belajar teks Bahasa Inggris hortatori eksposisi untuk siswa kelas sebelas SMA Pontianak tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini adalah sebuah penilitian quasi experimental dengan rancangan non-equivalent control group. Sampel yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling dimana XI MIA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimental dan XI MIA 3 sebagai kelas kontrol.  Questionnaire digunakan uuntuk mencari tahu tingkat kreativitas siswa dalam belajar teks hortatori eksposisi. Questionnaire digunakan sebagai tolak ukur sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan.  Penghitungan nilai questionnaire berdasarkan Skala Likert. Penghitungan tingkat keefetivan menunjukan hasil 2.06 (> 1.00) yang mana dikategorikan sebagai efek yang kuat. Data menyatakan bahwa siswa di kelas eksperimental mendapatkan kesempatan lebih untuk membagi ide mereka di kelas IBL dan kesempatan itulah yang meghasilkan peningkatan akan kreativitas siswa. Abstract

Abstract: The main aim of this study is to design the appropriate integrated skills teaching strategies using project-based learning for grade XI students. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Bengkayang involving XI grade students of science class and two English teachers. This research followed ADDIE’s procedure. The researcher conducted observation, interview and administered questionnaires for the data collecting. In addition, the researcher obtained validation from the experts to improve the quality of teaching strategy designed in this study. The result of this study was A Gallery Exhibition Project that can be used as supplementary teaching strategy. It comprised of three parts i.e., Pre-project activities (planning the project), whilst-project activities (conducting the project outside the classroom/preparing the project) and post-project activities (presenting the project). Abstrak: Tujuan utama penelitian ini bertujuan: untuk merancang strategi pembelajaran terpadu berbasis proyek yang dilaksanakan pada siswa kelas XI. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 1 Bengkayang melibatkan para siswa kelas XI MIPA dan dua orang guru bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan prosedur ADDIE. Peneliti melakukan pengamatan (observasi), melakukan wawancara dan kuisioner. Selain itu, peneliti menvalidasi produk yang dilakukan oleh para ahli untuk meningkatkan kualitas dari strategi pengajaran dalam penelitian ini. Hasil utama penelitian ini adalah A Gallery Exhibition Project yang dapat digunakan sebagai tambahan program pengajaran. Strategi pengajaran ini terdiri dari tiga bagian yaitu pre-project (perencanaan kegiatan proyek ), whilst-project (kegiatan pelaksanaan proyek di luar kelas/mempersiapkan proyek) dan post-project (mempresentasikan kegiatan proyek). Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilaksanakan sebagai upaya meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa di kelas VIIA semester dua SMP Negeri 3 Meliau pada Tahun Pelajaran 2012-2013. Metode penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas terhadap siswa kelas VII A SMP Negeri 3 Meliau berjumlah 38 Orang. Data diperoleh dari hasil penilaian keterampilan siswa dalam berbicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara di kelas dengan menggunakan teknik bermain peran dapat meningkat. Data hasil test menunjukan bahwa rata-rata perolehan nilai siswa pada siklus 1 57,24 dan rata-rata perolehan nilai pada siklus 2 menjadi 66,18 yang berarti kategorinya cukup baik, dan itu berarti bahwa penggunaan teknik bermain peran dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dikelas dapat digunakan. ABSTRACT This research is designed as a research on improving students speaking ability in class to the second semester of the seventh grade class A students of SMP Negeri 3 Meliau in academic year 2012-2013. In this research the researcher used Role play as technique in teaching speaking. The method of this research is called A Classroom Action Research. The subject of this research was seventh grade class A students of SMP Negeri 3 Meliau in academic year 2012-2013 consist of 38 students. The data of this research were collected by using measurement technique that was a performance test to measure students achievements. The findings of this classroom action research showed that speaking ability in class increases by using Role play technique. Based on data analysis the mean score of the students on the first cycle is 57.24 that qualified poor to average, and the mean score of the students on the second cycle is 66.18 that is qualified average to good. It means that action hypothesis the using Role play technique to improve students speaking ability in class is proved. Keywords: Teaching Technique, CAR, Speaking Ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how STAD technique did improve students comprehension in reading descriptive text. The action hypothesis in this research was stated that teaching reading descriptive text using Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) technique can improve the achievement of the eighth grade students of MTSN 2 Pontianak. Classroom action research was used in conducting this research in two cycles. The data were divided measurement test, observation checklist, and field note. The result of the implementation shows that after the researcher conducted the actions, the students reading comprehension improved as shown in the result of both the observation on the students activities during the actions and their individual quizzes mean scores. From the reading comprehension test, the mean score of the individual quiz 1 was 48.57 and the mean score of the individual quiz 2 was 75.75. Student Team Achievement Divisions technique can improve reading comprehension of main idea, details, reference and inference.

Abstract

This study was conducted among early English learners when they encountered problems in learning vocabularies. The purpose of this study was to uncover difficulties in learning English vocabularies faced by 33 Pesantren (boarding school) students in West Kalimantan. These students had low achievement in vocabulary mastery. The data were derived from questionnaires and interviews with selected students. The data revealed that the students experienced four difficulties, namely, pronouncing unique English sounds, spelling, memorizing long syllable-words, and understanding meaning of unfamiliar words.

Abstract

This study investigates the students’ use  of Google Classroom in English language learning. The data were derived from Likert Scale questionnaires including open-ended questions distributed to 119 English Education students. There were five aspects covered in the questionnaire: access to Google Classroom, perceived usefulness, communication and interaction, instructional delivery and students’ satisfaction. Meanwhile, open-ended inquired students’ real experiences. The result showed the mean score with the following distribution: 4,49 for easy access to GC, 3,93 for perceived usefulness, 3,63 for communication and interaction, 4,10 for instructional delivery, and 3,82 for students’ satisfaction. Some students shared their experiences in using Google Classroom. Some of them said that Google Classroom brought their courses to their face so that they can participate and continue work on their classes beyond the working hours. Even many of them still worked and uploaded their assignments till midnight. In spite of these positive findings, the study revealed that some students fell into serious addiction to social media technology.

Abstract

This research aimed to design an appropriate interactive multimedia to support teaching vocabulary of recount texts to tenth-grade students of MAN 2 Pontianak using Lectora Inspire. The interactive multimedia was designed based on the teacher’s interview, analysis of the current syllabus, and the English textbooks. The writer applied ADDIE as the research model. However, the writer only implemented four phases which were analyzing, designing, developing, and evaluation (ADDE). The product was designed by using Lectora Inspire and some supporting software. The contents of the interactive multimedia were focused on historical recount texts and it was adopted from “Buku Bahasa Inggris Kelas X” Version 2017 that linked to syllabus and learning objectives. The interactive multimedia was completed with some interactive features like feedbacks, navigation buttons, and dictionary. The writer used expert validation to evaluate the product based on the content aspects and the design aspects. It revealed that the product validation ranged from good to very good. Therefore, the interactive multimedia was usable to support teaching and learning processes in MAN 2 Pontianak.
