Abstract

This study aimed to identify the challenges faced by teachers in integrating digital media in EFL classrooms and explore their innovative solutions to overcome them. Data were derived from interviews with teachers who attempted to incorporate digital media in a variety of situations. Official documents, including local and national government regulations, school websites, school YouTube channels, and lesson plans supplemented the interview data. The results revealed that teachers faced challenges such as lack of competence, deficient teaching materials, and inadequate digital teaching skills when attempting to integrate technology into their classroom. Limitations of infrastructures, such as low internet bandwidth and a scarcity of devices available in their schools were also reported as additional contributing challenges. Despite the difficult circumstances, evident in the study were teachers’ willingness and efforts to make use of a diverse array of technology devices and applications in their classrooms. These included projectors, laptops, smartphones, audio speakers, as well as software such as word processors, PowerPoint, Google Classroom, Hot Potatoes, search engines, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, online dictionaries, YouTube, and video editors. This study sheds light on the resilience and resourcefulness of EFL teachers in adapting to digital media and offers insights into ways to support and enhance their efforts.

Abstract

Completing a Skripsi and scientific publication is a significant challenge for many students. Despite finishing their courses early in the seventh semester, many have not begun working on their Skripsi, which is the first step towards scientific publication. Common obstacles they face include low scientific writing skills, waning motivation, and difficulty concentrating due to work commitments. To address these issues, a Community Service (PKM) program was implemented to assist students in completing their Skripsi. Prior to the PKM, a survey was conducted to assess students' progress and identify obstacles hindering their Skripsi writing. The PKM consisted of three webinar series attended by 64 students from various educational programs. The webinars featured four keynote speakers who presented motivational talks on Skripsi writing, quantitative and qualitative research designs, and tips on initiating research activities. The third meeting included three students presenting their research plans, with keynote speakers providing feedback to improve their research project quality. All webinar activities were recorded and published on a YouTube channel for later reference by students. Abstract

This research was investigating one of speech acts skills in communication that is illocutionary acts. Therefore, the aim of this study was to achieve three objectives, the first is to identify the classifications of illocutionary acts performed in the conflict storyline of Akeelah and The Bee movie. The second is to find out the types of illocutionary acts which are dominantly expressed in Akeelah and The Bee movie. The last is to identify the types of sentences of indirect speech acts to represent the five types of illocutionary acts. To achieve these objectives, a pragmatic analysis was implemented. Therefore, the research used the theory of speech acts proposed by Yule (2014). The data collected through a purposive sampling, a corpus (transcript of the movie), and a movie. In the three conflict storylines process of data analysis was started by watching the movie and reading the whole script. The next is classifying the data based on the types of illocutionary acts proposed by Yule and the last step was interpreting the data based on the contextual meaning of the utterances from the characters. As a result, three points of conclusions are concluded. The first, the classifications of illocutionary acts found were directive, representative, commissive, and expressive. The second, the most dominant types of illocutionary acts were representative and expressive (37%), the middle was directive (27%), and the less was commissive (9%). The three main characters performed illocutionary acts both in direct speech or indirect speech. The indirect speeches were dominated by interrogative sentences.

Abstract

This study explored the acceptance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in writing publications among senior high school teachers in Singkawang, adopting the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a framework. The research aimed to comprehend teachers' attitudes toward AI integration in their writing practices. AI, including tools such as Google Translate, Grammarly, QuillBot, ChatGPT, and Elicit, offers multifaceted benefits, enhancing writing productivity, providing real-time feedback, and assisting in language translation. The study involved 30 teachers, utilizing the final version of TAM to assess Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Attitude toward Usage, and Behavioral Intention to Use. Results revealed a moderate level of acceptance, with 83.3% falling into the medium category. Descriptive statistics underscore positive perceptions, indicating that teachers recognize AI's potential benefits, yet qualitative insights are needed to explore barriers and variations in acceptance levels. Despite concerns of over-reliance and potential biases, AI tools significantly contribute to writing efficiency, accessibility, and democratization of information. The study recommends future research to investigate specific AI tool impacts and individual experiences for a more comprehensive understanding of AI acceptance dynamics among Singkawang teachers.
