Abstract

This study aims to determine the contribution of learning motivation and Intelligence Quotient (IQ) to the Biology learning outcomes of 11th-grade students at SMAN 6 Padang. Learning motivation is an internal factor that plays a crucial role in enhancing learning effectiveness, while IQ reflects students' cognitive capacity in understanding subject matter. This research employs a descriptive correlational method with a quantitative ex-post-facto approach. The population consists of all 11th-grade science students at SMAN 6 Padang, with samples selected using the proportionate random sampling technique, comprising 25% of students from each class. Data were collected through learning motivation questionnaires, IQ test documentation, and students' Biology learning outcomes. Data analysis was conducted using simple correlation statistical techniques to examine the relationship between the research variables. The findings of this study are expected to provide insights into the extent to which learning motivation and IQ contribute to Biology learning outcomes and serve as a reference for educators in designing more effective teaching strategies to enhance students' academic achievement. This study shows that learning motivation and IQ contribute to the Biology learning outcomes of 11th-grade students at SMAN 6 Padang, with a significant simultaneous relationship (sig. F Change = 0.000; R = 0.794, high correlation). Learning motivation has a greater impact than IQ (Pearson correlation = 0.777, high correlation) as it encourages perseverance, increases study duration, and optimizes concentration. In contrast, IQ has a very low correlation with learning outcomes (Pearson correlation = 0.098) due to other influential factors such as teaching methods and emotional intelligence. Thus, learning motivation plays a more dominant role in determining academic achievement, emphasizing the need for strategies that focus on enhancing students' motivation.

Abstract

This study explores the role of curriculum reforms in education development, focusing on the perceptions and experiences of teachers, administrators, and students in schools that have undergone recent curriculum changes. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research involved semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather data on the impact of the reforms. The findings reveal that while curriculum reforms have led to increased student engagement and the promotion of student-centered learning, challenges such as insufficient teacher training, inadequate resources, and resistance to change hindered their effective implementation. Teachers reported a lack of professional development and resources necessary to support the new curriculum, which affected their ability to fully integrate the reforms into their teaching practices. Students, on the other hand, expressed increased interest in subjects that employed project-based and collaborative learning methods, although some struggled with the self-regulation required in a more independent learning environment. This study contributes to existing literature by addressing gaps in teacher preparedness, resource allocation, and the varying outcomes of student-centered learning. The research underscores the importance of comprehensive teacher training, adequate resources, and inclusive reform processes to ensure the success of curriculum changes in promoting quality education.

Abstract

Abstract

Giant false sensitive plants (Mimosa invisa Colla) and giant sensitive plants (Mimosa pigra L.) are invasive plant species in the tropics and native to America. They are widely distributed in different ecosystems and soil types. Apart from being considered woody shrub weeds, these plant species can be used as herbal medicine for their antioxidant activities. An experiment to study the antioxidant activities and phytochemicals of M. invisa and M. pigra grown at 200 m from the coastline and close to the riverbank (riparian abandoned land) was carried out from March to November 2023. Weed leaves were collected as purposive randomized sampling from different terrestrial habitats in the City of Padang, West Sumatra. Antioxidant activity was identified according to a 2-2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazil (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay, and phytochemical compounds were identified qualitatively. Results demonstrate that M. invisa had mild antioxidant activity and M. pigra had strong antioxidant activity. The IC50 values for M. invisa grown at 200 m from the coastline and at the riverbank were 121.3 ± 11.5 and 105.6 ± 2.90 ppm, respectively. The IC50 values of M. pigra grown at 200 m from the coastline and at the riverbank were 80.6 ± 15.9 and 85.1 ± 9.03 ppm, respectively. Phenolic, saponin, and steroid were detected in all weeds grown at different habitats. However, alkaloids and terpenoids were not detected. Interestingly, flavonoid was not detected in the leaves of M. pigra grown at the riverbank.
