Abstract

Manurung J, Siregar IZ, Kusmana C, Dwiyanti FG. 2017. Genetic variation of the mangrove species Avicennia marina in heavy metal polluted estuaries of Cilegon Industrial Area, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 18: 1109-1115. Mangrove forests are often facing various anthropogenic disturbances, particularly in the industrial area. However, information on the status of industrial heavy metal pollution and its impact on the genetic variation of mangrove species, such as Avicennia marina, particularly in Indonesian industrial area has not been assessed. In this study, the classification of heavy metals in two estuaries of Cilegon Industrial Area (Pelabuhan Warna Sari and Krakatau) and one estuary outside Cilegon Industrial Area (Pulau Sangiang) were determined by Sediment Quality Guidelines- States Environment Protection Agency (SQGs-USEPA). Furthermore, the genetic diversity of 72 individuals of A. marina in the three estuaries were examined using four microsatellite loci (M3, M64, M81 and M98). The results showed that Krakatau area was the heavily polluted estuary based on SQGs-USEPA and have a lower genetic variation (He= 0.54) than Pelabuhan Warna Sari (moderately polluted, He= 0.56) and Pulau Sangiang (non-polluted, He= 0.60) suggesting a notable of deficiencies of genetic variation of A. marina in heavy polluted estuary compared to moderately and non-polluted estuary. Considering the low level of genetic variation in heavily polluted area, transplantation among estuaries and introduction of propagules from non-polluted estuary or other regions are needed as one of the conservation efforts.

Abstract

Kusmana C, Hidayat T, Istomo, Rusdiana O. 2018. Growth performance of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza derived from cut-propagule seedling. Biodiversitas 19: 208-214. The availability and existence of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza seed sources is getting decreased. This causes the generative reproduction of this plant is limited. The present research was carried out to study the growth performance of B. gymnorrhiza derived from vegetative cut-propagule seedling by employing different type of cut-propagule, the provision of root promoting hormones, and the provision of NPK fertilizer. The research was conducted at the Greenhouse for 6 months using a completely randomized design (CRD) 3x3x2 factorial with five replications. The results showed that B. gymnorrhiza could be propagated by cut-propagule. Seedlings growth which derived from complete propagule apparently had a better performance than those derived from cut-propagule. Roots derived from complete propagule and the bottom part of cut-propagule grow faster than the top part of cut-propagule. Two types of shoot such as shoot existing before planting which was derived from complete propagule and top part of cut-propagule; and shoots existing after planting called as adventitious shoot derived from the bottom part of cut-propagule has been formed. Unfortunately, new complete shoots derived from the bottom part of cut-propagule was not formed. Furthermore, there was no significant effect of root promoting hormone and NPK fertilizer induction on the shoot and root growth of B. gymnorrhiza.

Abstract

Ritonga FN, Dwiyanti FG, Kusmana C, Siregar UJ, Siregar IZ. 2018. Population genetics and ecology of Sumatran camphor (Dryobalanops aromatica) in natural and community-owned forests in Indonesia. Biodiversitas 19: 2175-2182. Dryobalanops aromatica Gaertn. f. (Sumatran camphor) is a valuable tree species that produces borneol (camphor) and good-quality timber. However, the population of this species has declined due to illegal logging and conversion of forests into plantations and has been classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. This study aimed to examine the genetic variation and spatial distribution of this species in a community-owned forest (Barus) and two natural forests (Singkohor and Danau Paris) in Indonesia using the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA marker. The results of this study showed that D. aromatica had moderate levels of genetic variation (expected heterozygosity [He] = 0.1760 [Barus population] to 0.2134 [Singkohor population]) and genetic differentiation (Nei’s Gst = 0.1257). The genetic distance was the smallest between the Singkohor and Danau Paris populations (Nei’s distance = 0.0363) and greatest between the Singkohor and Barus populations (Nei’s distance = 0.0534). The spatial distribution of D. aromatica was grouped in both Barus and Danau Paris based on Morisita’s index of diversity (ip = 0.06 and 0.043, respectively). These findings indicated that genetic conservation might be performed in situ in combination with enrichment planting using locally propagated sources.

Abstract

Abstract. Ismail AY, Kusmana C, Sudiana E, Widodo P. 2019. Short Communication: Population and stand structure of Cinnamomum sintoc in the Low Land Forest of Mount Ciremai National Park, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1042-1047. Cinnamomum sintoc (C. sintoc) is one of the anthelmintic and anti-inflammatory medicinal plants which produces essential oils from its roots, skin, and leaves. This study aimed to analyze the population and stand structure of C. sintoc in Mount Ciremai National Park, West Java, Indonesia. Data collection was carried out using plots/ strips method. The plots were purposively placed and made at each altitude and direction of the slope. The research recorded 804 individual trees from each growth edge. Individual density between slope directions and altitudes was not significantly different for all diameter classes, but was significantly different between slope directions of stratum B (P = 0.001) and E (P = 0.012). These results indicate that sintoc population is spread evenly and can be cultivated at various slope and altitude directions and has no preference for the two topographic variables.

Abstract

Abstract. Narendra BH, Widiatmaka, Kusmana C, Karlinasari L, Machfud. 2019. Multi-dimensional rapid appraisal technique for evaluating the sustainability of energy plantation forests in East Lombok District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1027-1033. The increased use of woody biomass as a renewable energy source should be supported by development of sustainable energy plantation forest. This study aims to evaluate the sustainability status of energy plantation forest in East Lombok District and to determine the leverage attributes affecting sustainability. The evaluation was carried out using rapid appraisal approach, consisting of multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) analysis to provide sustainability indices for ecological, economic and social dimensions, followed by Monte Carlo simulation to define the validity. Dominant attributes affecting the sustainability were assessed by sensitivity analysis. All analyses were executed using the R software. The evaluation of eight locations generally results in a quite sustainable status for ecological, social, and economic dimensions with the validity index values of 72.73%, 61.07%, and 58.49%, respectively. To maintain or enhance sustainability, some leverage attributes need to be prioritized for policy intervention. In the ecological dimension, increasing species diversity using some potential energy woody species should be prioritized. In the social dimension, optimizing the role and capability of forest farmer groups and their members is needed, while for the economic dimension, government should support the expanding area of energy plantation forest managed by each farmer.

Abstract

Abstract. Melo RH, Kusmana C, Eriyatno, Nurrochmat DR. 2020. Short Communication: Mangrove forest management based on multi-dimension scalling (RAP-Mforest) in Kwandang Sub-district, North Gorontalo District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1352-1357. Management of mangrove forests is an important aspect in the effort to conserve the environment in coastal areas. Its management requires planning to ensure the sustainability of its function and benefit. This study aimed to analyze the sustainability level of the mangrove forest management in Kwandang Sub-district, North Gorontalo District, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia and to determine the factors that affected that sustainability. Data were collected through field measurement and interviews, and then analyzed using Rapid Appraisal of Mangrove Forest (Rap-Mforest) approach and Monte Carlo analysis. The results showed that mangrove management was fairly sustainable on the ecological criteria (60.43%), but less sustainable on the economic criteria (47.79%) and social criteria (42.22%). The result of leverage analysis indicated that 6 out of 20 indicators were categorized as sensitive indicators affecting the sustainability of mangrove management. These sensitive indicators should be given priority in increasing the sustainability index in the future.

Abstract

Abstract. Istomo, Kusmana C, Dwiyanti FG, Malik D. 2020. Comparison of several methods of stands inventory prior to logging towards the yield volume of mangrove forest in Bintuni Bay, West Papua Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1438-1447. The difference between the estimated volume and the actual harvested volume is the reason that mangrove forest management is unsustainable. To overcome this discrepancy, it is important to do what so called Inventarisasi Tegakan Sebelum Penebangan (ITSP) or stands inventory prior to logging for logging concession. However, the study on suitable ITSP methods for mangrove forests has been limited. This study aims to assess three ITSP methods (namely Line Strip Sampling Method, Line Systematic Sampling Method, and CIFOR’s Modified Method) using two allometric equations (i.e., equation developed specifically by a logging concession and equation developed that has specific formula for each species), and to select the combination of method and allometric equation that produce the highest accuracy for logging concession in mangrove forest, especially in Bintuni Bay, West Papua. The results showed that CIFOR’s Modified Method produces the lowest discrepancy between the estimated volume and the actual harvested volume, followed by Line Strip Sampling Method. In addition, regardless the ITSP methods employed, the allometric equation by Cole et al. (1999) outperforms the equation developed specifically by a logging concession. While producing the lowest discrepancy with plot size is the smallest than other methods, CIFOR’s Modified Method has a disadvantage when applied in the field due to difficulties in making a circular plot. As such, we recommend ITSP method to be used is the Line Strip Sampling method with allometric equation.

Abstract. Adhya I, Widodo P, Kusmana C, Sudiana E, Widhiono I, Supartono T. 2020. Short Communication: Population structure and habitat characteristics of Goniothalamus macrophyllus in Bukit Pembarisan forest, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1130-1135. Goniothalamus macrophyllus (Blume) Hook.f. & Thomson is a forest species with important medicinal value and widely used by many local communities. Excessive harvesting of this species has led to population decline and may lead to extinction. The aims of this research was to investigate population structure, habitat characteristics and environmental factors affecting local densities of G. macrophyllus in Bukit Pembarisan forest, Kuningan District, West Java, Indonesia. Purposive sampling was conducted at 17 locations during November 2017 to March 2018. The result showed that the population structure in the study area was dominated by seedlings (95% of the total number of individuals), followed by saplings (4%) and poles (0.1%). Seedlings, saplings, and poles were found growing across a wide elevational range (432-1,273 m asl.), at temperatures of 19-25°C, relative humidity of 80-90%, and soil pH of 4.61-6.46. The multiple regression analysis showed that soil nitrogen and soil pH affected seedling density, whereas soil clay content affected pole density. Our findings indicate that G. macrophyllus preferred acidic soils with high nitrogen and high clay content. We therefore recommend that future conservation efforts include the maintenance of existing poles, a prohibition on bark harvesting, and encouraging use of the leaves, rather than bark, for medicinal applications among consumers of G. macrophyllus.

Abstract

Abstract. Authors. 2020. Effects of permeable barriers on total ecosystem carbon stocks of mangrove forests and abandoned ponds in Demak District, Central Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5298-5307.  In this study, we observed the effects of constructing permeable barriers in the low-lying coastal zone and severely eroded coast of Demak District, Central Java, Indonesia in the context of mangrove forest structures and carbon (C) dynamics. Forest structures were characterized by stand density, basal area, and ecological indices. The dynamics of C, expressed as total ecosystem carbon stocks (TECS), were compared in mangrove forests, abandoned ponds, and productive ponds by estimating C pools from above- and belowground biomass, dead organic matter, and soil. We found that permeable barriers, whether or not protect mangroves, results in the similarity of above- and belowground C due to no considerable difference in basal area. By contrast, soil properties in terms of bulk density, N concentration, and C:N ratio statistically varied among sites. We discovered that changes in soil properties were associated with duration of permeable barriers, resulting in an increase of soil C in mangrove sites, i.e., 618.84±30.39 Mg C ha?1; 704.13±17.73 Mg C ha?1; and 759.88±15.26 Mg C ha?1 in 0-, 1-, and 4-year-old permeable barriers, respectively. Moreover, these barriers were proved not only could enrich soil C in mangroves but also provide a habitat for Avicennia sp. seedlings in the newly reclaimed coastline.
