Abstract

Over the next years, Indonesia’s traditional gold mining technique (that employs mercury amalgamation) will be gradually replaced by cyanidation as a result of a Presidential Decree that has been recently issued. The cyanide-containing waste resulting from the processing tanks of this new method will be generally sedimented and flow directly into the surrounding small rivers. This study aimed to reduce the impact of cyanide contamination on the environment by using the simple activated carbon that can be produced by artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Water samples were taken from artificial wastewater as part of three replications. The highest recorded removal of cyanide from sewage was 98.43%, with an equilibrium reached at a fixed adsorbent dosage of 0.05 g over a contact time of 24 hours. Cyanide adsorption was also found to be pH-dependent, with the highest cyanide adsorption occurring at a pH of 8. The adsorption capacity for cyanide was estimated at 12.51 mg g-1 of the adsorbent, and it was considered to function based on a Langmuir isotherm model. The findings of this study confirm that the utilized glass wool in the assessed method can increase the yield of activated carbon, thereby offering a low-cost and effective adsorbent that can be used in order to remove cyanide from ASGM wastewater.

Abstract

Litter decomposition rate is useful method to determine forest fertility level. The aims of this study were to measure decomposition rate, and analyze the nutrient content released organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphor from Avicennia marina and Rhizophora apiculata litters during the decomposition process. The research was conducted in the Pulau Dua Nature Reserve, Serang-Banten on A. marina and R. apiculata forest communities. Litter decomposition rate measurements performed in the field. Litter that has been obtained with the trap system is inserted into litter bag and than tied to the roots or trees to avoid drifting sea water. Litter decomposition rate was measured every 15 days and is accompanied by analysis of the content of organic C , total N and P. Our research results showed decomposition rate of A. marina (k= 0.83) was higher than that of R. apiculata (k= 0.41). Differences of  leaf anatomical structure and sea water salinity  influenced to the rate of litter decomposition. Organic C released was declined with longer of litter decomposition, on the contrary of releasing N and P nutrients.

Abstract

Insects are among the most significant numbers of living things in the world that have many benefits. However, there are still many insects that have not been identified yet, for example, insects in mangrove ecosystems. Each age of the stand has differences in vegetation structure, so insect diversity research on each age difference of R. mucronata is essential. Sampling was collected by purposive sampling by taking three guludan samples measuring 5 m ´ 10 m. In each sample, a census was carried out to measure the diameter and height of R. mucronata at the age of 17, 13, 9, and 4 years for further vegetation analysis. The capture of insects is carried out using a yellow-pan trap and then identified to the level of morphospecies. The results showed a relationship between the age of different stands. At a young age had a lot of diversity and the highest value of insect abundance. The age of R. mucronata 13 years had the highest quantity dominated by the order Diptera Keywords: density, ecosystem, morphospecies, temperature, yellow-pan trap

SAMBAS, E. N., KUSMANA, C., PRASETYO, L. B. & PARTOMIHARDJO, T. 2018. Vegetation analysis and population structure of plants at Mount Endut forested area, Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, Banten, Java,Indonesia. Reinwardtia 17 (1): 39–53. — Study of vegetation structure and species composition at Mount Endut was carried out by using transect and plot methods. Data of trees, saplings and seedlings were enumerated from four transects measuring 10 m × 2,000 m in four directions of slopes i.e. North, South, East and West. In total there were 180 species of trees and saplings belonging to 105 genera and 51 families. Tree density and basal area indicate the variation and the differences in each of the sampling locations. Density of saplings and abundance of seedlings tend to be low in locations with high density and basal areas at tree level. Tree species having higher Importance Value were Castanopsis acuminatissima, Schima wallichii, C. argentea, Quercus gemelliflora, and Altingia excelsa. Castanopsis acuminatissima, Garcinia rostrata, S. wallichii, Symplocos cochinchinensis, and Prunus arborea were saplings which had highest density, while Ophiorrhiza marginata, Cyathea contaminans, Pinanga coronata,C. acuminatissima, and G. rostrata were the most abundant listed seedlings at the study site. At least 27 tree species (21.91%) were recorded as relatively rare (presence represented by only 1–2 individuals), thus requiring special attention in the management of the area.
