Abstract

This research aims at developing local instruction theory for learning combinations by using Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This research uses a design research approach, Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT), developed from a series of activities to obtain a better understanding about combinations at Senior High School (SHS) students. Theoretical development is supported by an interactive process in designing learning activities, conducting teaching experiment and conducting retrospective analysis to contribute to combinations of Local Instruction Theory (LIT). An understanding of combinations emerges and develops during classroom learning activities. Qualitative analysis of teaching experiments shows that by using local instruction theory teaching materials that characterize RME students are able to develop their understanding about a combination.

Abstract

This study aimed to explain the relationship between self-concept and mathematics procedural knowledge among undergraduate students of mathematics education. This study investigated the affective and cognitive aspect of students in the learning of mathematics. The method in this study surveyed with non-probability sampling technique. The subjects were 133 undergraduate students of mathematics education from public and private university in Palembang, Indonesia. 66 of them were undergraduate students in public university. The rest of them were undergraduate students in a private university. The instruments that were used are questionnaire of self-concept and essay test of mathematics procedural knowledge. The result from the Spearman Rank Correlation showed Sig. = 0.006 < 0.05. From that result, we conclude that there is a significant relationship between undergraduate students’ self-concept and their mathematics procedural knowledge.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of mathematical teaching that takes place in the classroom to identifying the characteristics of didactical contract that occur as part of a didactical situation. Didactical contract is a way that determines the responsibilities of teachers and students and regulates their interaction in a learning process. Arithmetic operations involving negative numbers are known to have epistemological obstacles that cause student difficulties in solving problems and understand the higher level subject matter. The design experiment was conducted on 31 seventh grade students and a mathematics teacher on negative integer operations lessons. The researchers analyzed the ongoing learning, how the didactic situational stages evolve in the teacher-student interaction that allows the formation of new knowledge or concepts in the student and how the teacher organizes the responsibility for achieving the learning objectives. The Analysis showed that students, at an early stage, can perform negative integers operations by utilizing the basic concepts they get in primary school. This concept can bridge into a new knowledge that identifies the properties of integer count operations and builds power of mind on problem-solving.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the student's Statistical Literacy model in Statistics learning in Higher Education. Researchers conducted an in-depth study of student statistical literacy, how they understand and apply statistics, how statistics are used as a tool for reliable data that can be trusted as scientific works. The research method uses qualitative research methods with a Grounded Theory approach. Participants involved in this study were 114 participants from several universities in West Java, Indonesia. The results of this study found a student statistical literacy model consisting of 2 dimensions and 5 elements. Dimensions of Statistical Knowledge: Descriptive Statistics, Inference Statistics, Statistical Communication and Statistical Reasoning. Attitude Dimensions: Confidence and Critical Attitude.

Abstract

This study aims to understand how pre-service mathematics teachers conduct prospective analyses comprehensively. A qualitative research method with a case study design was used. The participant was Mrs N, a pre-service mathematics teacher who conducted research using DDR methodology in a grade 9 junior high school in Sindang, Majalengka, involving 48 students. Data were collected by analyzing empirical evidence from Mrs. N's prospective analysis process by uncovering the various stages of a prospective analysis. An iterative approach was used to analyze the data by refining the research questions through discussions and regular meetings with Mrs. N. The process ensured adaptability to new insights and understandings from the empirical data. Our findings reveal that the teacher draws upon fundamental philosophical principles from didactical design research, including hermeneutics, phenomenology, and ethnomethodology. By embracing these approaches, the teacher gains valuable insights into conducting research within an interpretive paradigm, allowing for a deeper exploration of the meaning of concepts, the purpose of learning, and the cultural influences that shape the educational process. Additionally, our study sheds light on the emergence of transpositional didactics theory as the prospective teacher delves into understanding the meaning of the geometrics transformation concept.

Abstract

This scoping review aims to consolidate the research that has been conducted on fractional learning challenges, with a particular emphasis on the various student groups, intervention strategies, outcomes, and specific learning problems. The research finds essential research topics and relevant papers and extracts data in order to gain an understanding of the intricate nature of fraction learning. The technique utilized in this study is a five-stage process. The preliminary literature searches produced a total of twenty-three articles, seven of which were chosen for a more in-depth examination. These publications covered a variety of themes, including the effectiveness of manipulatives, strategies for accommodating students who struggle with mathematics, focused training interventions, and instructor guidance. The findings of this research shed light on the myriad of difficulties associated with learning fractions. These difficulties range from basic conceptual and procedural comprehension to unique educational obstacles for a wide variety of student populations, including those with learning disabilities. The study focuses on a variety of intervention tactics, such as accommodations, strategic training, and the utilization of manipulatives, with the objective of enhancing problem-solving abilities, conceptual comprehension, and procedural proficiency in fractions. This all-encompassing examination highlights the ubiquity of misconceptions and the necessity of explicit training. It also highlights the usefulness of direct instruction, strategic education, and problem-solving exercises in improving students' comprehension of fractions. In order to overcome problems in learning fractions and to improve mathematical education, the findings advocate for the continuation of research and the incorporation of effective pedagogical approaches.

Abstract

This study investigates learning obstacles encountered by pre-service mathematics teachers in constructing proofs for geometric transformations, a topic that has not been extensively examined in previous research. In contrast to prior studies, this research identifies specific types of errors, as well as their interconnections, representing the first step in uncovering learning obstacles. The study followed the four steps of phenomenology: bracketing, intuiting, analyzing, and describing, using written tests and interviews to explore students' errors. The findings reveal that errors can be categorized into three types: visualization errors, conceptual errors, and procedural errors. The analysis of their interconnections revealed that conceptual errors were the primary factor contributing to both procedural and visualization errors. Analyzing these errors led to the identification of epistemological obstacles, which manifested when participants struggled to apply fundamental concepts—such as injectivity, surjectivity, and bijectivity—to more complex tasks. Therefore, the study concludes that the primary learning obstacle discovered is an epistemological obstacle.
