Abstract

In the context of globalized teacher education, the integration of language competence into the development of professional identity among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student-teachers remains insufficiently addressed. This study explores how non-native English-speaking student-teachers construct their professional identity through the lens of language competence during international teaching practicums. Employing a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the research investigates the lived experiences of two Indonesian EFL student-teachers who participated in the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) exchange program. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews and document analysis, including lesson plans, reflective journals, and mentor feedback. The analysis identified four key themes: language competence as a catalyst for identity formation, self-awareness as a foundation for professional growth, the integration of disciplinary knowledge into teaching practice, and student-centered engagement. The findings reveal divergent pathways in identity construction, shaped by how each participant perceived and responded to linguistic challenges. One student-teacher reframed language anxiety as an opportunity for transformation, while the other struggled with persistent self-doubt despite technical preparation. This study addresses a critical gap in teacher education literature by emphasizing how language competence functions as a core element of professional identity, rather than a supplementary skill. The results offer practical implications for designing teacher education curricula that prioritize reflective practice, language support, and identity development. By situating language competence within the broader process of becoming an effective educator, this study contributes to a more holistic understanding of teacher preparation in international and intercultural settings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the moral values contained in the Seloko Ulur Antar tradition at the traditional wedding of the Bernai Luar Village community, Sarolangun District, Jambi. This research uses an ethnographic approach with descriptive qualitative methods. Data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with two traditional leaders, and direct documentation during the Ulur Antar procession. The results showed that the Seloko Ulur Antar tradition contains moral values conveyed in the form of symbolic language through kato undang, proverbs, traditional rhymes, and kias words. The dominant moral values include politeness, equality, patience, empathy, and respect for local wisdom. This tradition functions as an educative medium and character booster, especially in shaping the social awareness of the younger generation. The novelty of this research lies in the systematic documentation of the form and meaning of seloko and its disclosure as a source of local culture-based character education values. The implications of the moral values in the Ulur Antar tradition show that the preservation of customary traditions in Bernai Luar Village not only strengthens social solidarity and human relations (hablumminannas), but also strengthens religious values (hablumminallah), patience, humility, and respect for local culture as the foundation of community character education.

Abstract

In an effort to foster a reading culture, the Indonesian government has launched various initiatives to improve literacy, particularly among the younger generation. Schools, as formal educational institutions, play a strategic role in shaping students' intellectual and moral development. In this context, school principals hold a central role as leaders—not only in promoting literacy culture but also in instilling Islamic values such as honesty, responsibility, and the pursuit of knowledge as a form of worship. This study aims to examine the role of school leadership in enhancing the literacy culture at SMP Negeri 21 Batang Hari. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with data collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving principals, teachers, the head librarian, and students. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the principal plays a key role in mobilizing, guiding, motivating, and setting an example in fostering literacy at school. Islamic values are integrated into activities such as reading as a form of reflection (tadabbur), building unity (ukhuwah) through shared reading sessions, and modeling appropriate reading manners (adab). The study concludes that effective, inspirational leadership rooted in Islamic values is essential in creating a school environment that holistically and meaningfully supports the development of a literacy culture.

Abstract

This study highlights the low English writing and speaking skills of students of the Information Systems Study Program at Nurdin Hamzah University. To address this challenge, a rule-based expert system application named M.E.G.A for Job Seekers was developed using the ADDIE model approach (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). This application functions as a self-assessment tool to improve students' professional communication readiness, especially in compiling CVs, job application letters, and interview preparation. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with subjects consisting of language experts, instructional media experts, and educational technology experts to validate the product. Meanwhile, 100 second-semester students of the Information Systems Study Program at Nurdin Hamzah University were used as the sample for testing the practicality, attractiveness, and effectiveness of the application. This study used quantitative data from questionnaires and tests, as well as qualitative data from open-ended responses by experts and students. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while the qualitative data were validated through triangulation and content analysis to support the development of the application. The results showed high scores in the aspects of functionality, attractiveness of appearance, and improvement of learning outcomes. Pre-test and post-test analysis showed significant improvements, while statistical analysis supported the pedagogical reliability of this system. The application has proven effective in supporting independent learning that is relevant to the needs of the world of work and has the potential to be adopted by other study programs. This study contributes to the development of digital learning through the integration of AI-based expert systems for the development of 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) have emerged as the leading teaching methods of this century. Thus, this study investigates the students preferences and experiences with PjBL and PBL in the development of writing skills at an Islamic university in Indonesia. Utilizing the qualitative analysis framework proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994), this research provides an in-depth examination of the students experiences, preferences, and the pedagogical efficacy of these two approaches. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the students who participated in writing courses that incorporated both PjBL and PBL strategies, allowing for a comprehensive comparison of their impacts on writing skills. The findings reveal that PjBL was particularly effective in enhancing the students writing abilities by nurturing sustained engagement, enabling thorough content exploration, and supporting iterative refinement through extended project work that integrates research, critical thinking, and feedback. In contrast, PBL proved valuable in promoting critical thinking and concise writing by utilizing structured problem-solving tasks. Overall, the study contributes to the discourse on effective writing instruction in higher education by suggesting that, while PjBL offered a more comprehensive framework for writing development, PBL served as a practical complementary method. The combined use of these strategies could, therefore, provide a balanced framework for enhancing the students academic writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study examines a range of learning activities used in teaching English and identifies those that students see as most helpful. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire adopted from Willing (1988). Some modification had been made to meet the purpose of this study. The questionnaire consists of two parts. Part 1 is ethnographic data in terms of the participants’ gender and field of study. Part 2 consists several items comprises students’ preferred activities in learning English. Students are asked to rank the activities of each category by circling one number. Circling number 1 means it is not helpful /preferable, while circling number 4 means it is very helpful /preferable for them. Then, all the responses were analyzed using SPSS Professional Statistics. The study suggests a number of pedagogical implication for English teaching and learning for non-English department students at universities in Indonesia. The finding suggests that teachers should take preferred activities into account when they are teaching. In addition, the study also proposed some suggestions for further research. These suggestions state the need to conduct research which involves more participants to confirm the results of the current study.
