Abstract

Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) in the elderly represents the primary clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis and remains a leading cause of death and morbidity. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the role of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Apolipoprotein-A (APO-A), and Apolipoprotein-B (APO-B) in the diagnosis and prevention of CHD among the elderly population. The results demonstrated that both APO-A and HDL were significantly negatively correlated with CHD (r = -0.336, p = 0.008; r = -0.274, p = 0.032), suggesting that higher levels of APO-A and HDL are associated with a lower risk of CHD. Conversely, APO-B and LDL showed a significant positive correlation with CHD (r = 0.411, p = 0.001; r = 0.358, p = 0.005), indicating that elevated levels of APO-B and LDL are linked to an increased risk of CHD. These findings highlight that measuring Apolipoprotein A and B levels may offer more valuable insights into atherosclerotic and cardiovascular risk assessment and may enhance the effectiveness of CHD prevention compared to traditional lipid profiles.

Abstract

Pruritus, or itching, is a common symptom in seniors that has a significant impact on their quality of life. Primary skin disorders such as xerosis, atopic dermatitis, and scabies, as well as systemic diseases such as cancer, chronic renal failure, cholestasis, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, iron deficiency anemia, and certain medications, can cause this condition. Chronic pruritus, which is common in individuals over 60 years of age, can cause discomfort, sleep disturbances, and psychological stress. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) methodology to screen for pruritus intensity in the elderly in St. Anna. One individual (2.4%) reported mild pruritus, while 12 individuals (29.3%) reported severe pruritus. Routine assessment using the 12-PSS provides important information for managing pruritus in the elderly, meeting clinical and research needs, and improving patient care and quality of life.

Abstract

Abstract

Body composition refers to the distribution of fat, muscle, bone, and other tissues in the human body, which is often expressed as a percentage of total body weight consisting of fat mass and lean body mass. Obesity, characterized by excess fat in adipose tissue, poses a significant health risk and is increasing in countries with low and medium mortality rates, especially in metropolitan areas. Factors contributing to this include genetics, a lack of physical activity, socioeconomic status, unhealthy eating patterns, psychosocial factors, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Excess body fat significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality. Although optimal body fat levels vary, excess fat increases the risk of health issues such as joint problems and cardiovascular disease. People widely use bioimpedance analysis (BIA), an efficient, non-invasive method, to assess nutritional status and body composition. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) method, which is carried out at PT. Narindo, North Jakarta, in the productive age population. The examination results showed that the average levels of total body fat, visceral fat, total subcutaneous fat, total muscle mass were 28.6%; 11%; 22.2%; 28.3%. Early detection of body composition is critical for assessing nutritional and health status as well as diagnosing disease, potentially reducing obesity-related morbidity and mortality.

Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in Indonesia, with central obesity as one of the main risk factors. This community service activity was carried out in Grogol Village, West Jakarta, with anthropometric screening in the form of measuring Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist-to-hip Ratio (WHR) in 67 productive age participants. The measurements were carried out by the Faculty of Medicine team at Tarumanagara University using calibrated standard measuring instruments. The screening results showed that 67.16% of participants were obese based on BMI and 73.13% had high WHR indicating central obesity. Education on healthy eating patterns, increased physical activity, and recommendations for further medical examinations were provided as an effort to prevent stroke and cardiometabolic complications. This simple anthropometric screening approach and health education are expected to increase public awareness and reduce the incidence of stroke, especially in productive age. Abstract

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a metabolic disorder that is increasingly prevalent among the productive-age population and can significantly impair quality of life, particularly due to its progressive nature and often asymptomatic presentation in the early stages. Routine assessments of kidney function—such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and serum creatinine levels—are essential for the early detection of kidney impairment. The Community Service Program (PKM) conducted in Grogol Village aimed to raise public awareness regarding the importance of early screening for kidney dysfunction. Among the 71 participants involved in the activity, 9 individuals (12.68%) had elevated serum creatinine levels, 4 individuals (5.63%) showed evidence of stage 3a kidney function decline, and 31 individuals (43.66%) were identified with stage 2 kidney function decline. Only 36 participants (50.7%) had normal kidney function. These results underscore the necessity of early detection efforts to prevent the progression of CKD and to promote sustained public awareness on the importance of maintaining kidney and metabolic health. Abstract

Elderly individuals often experience physiological and health-related changes, including reduced muscle quality and decreased levels of physical activity. This decline negatively impacts overall health, increases the risk of chronic diseases, and diminishes the ability to perform daily activities. This study aimed to examine the relationship between vitamin D levels and physical activity in older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home involving 93 participants aged 60 years and above. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), while vitamin D levels were measured through venous blood sampling. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation. The average age of the participants was 74.34 years, with a mean vitamin D level of 23.73 ng/mL. Based on IPAQ results, 26.9% of participants had low physical activity, 44.1% moderate, and 29% high. Spearman correlation revealed a weak but statistically significant positive correlation between vitamin D levels and physical activity (r = 0.240, p = 0.021). These findings suggest that higher physical activity levels are associated with higher vitamin D concentrations. Engaging in outdoor activities that promote sun exposure and an active lifestyle contributes to maintaining adequate vitamin D levels, which are essential for muscle function, balance, and bone health. Therefore, ensuring sufficient vitamin D status is crucial for supporting optimal physical activity and enhancing the overall health and quality of life among the elderly.

Abstract

Muscle strength is the ability of muscles to produce power for physical activity, important for mobility, balance and body function. Decreased muscle strength, especially due to aging, negatively impacts quality of life and increases the risk of diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Handgrip is a simple method for measuring muscle strength, especially hand grip strength. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between hand grip strength and blood insulin levels in the elderly. This study used a cross-sectional design at the Bina Bhakti Nursing Home with 93 participants aged 60 years and over. Hand grip strength was measured using a dynamometer, and blood insulin levels were measured from venous blood samples. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation. The results showed an average right hand grip strength of 10.23 kg and left hand 9.33 kg, with an average blood insulin level of 4.83 µU/mL. A significant positive correlation was found between right and left hand grip strength (rho = 0.884, p < 0.001), as well as between right (rho = 0.218, p = 0.036) and left hand grip strength (rho = 0.290, p = 0.005) and insulin levels. blood. These results indicate that hand grip strength can be an indicator of metabolic health in the elderly. Interventions such as strength training and proper nutrition are important for maintaining muscle strength and metabolic health in the elderly.
