Abstract

This research focuses on the Behantat Tradition which is still preserved by the people of Sumber Rahayu Village, Rambang District, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra. Sumber Rahayu Village is one of the villages that still inherits and is strong in noble traditions and culture, although currently most traditions and culture are starting to be eroded by technological advances and globalization. So this research aims to find out the social values and ethics that develop and are contained in the behantat tradition. This type of research is qualitative research using methods including library research which is complemented by interviews to strengthen the data. The author collects information from various sources, such as books, articles, newspapers and relevant online media. Once the information is collected, the data is filtered to find the sources that best suit the research topic. The next step is to note down the important points and organize them into coherent writing that is relevant to the theme raised. The results of this research reveal that the stages of the behantat tradition consist of betandang (proposal), inter-antaran (behantat), mbalasi, and nari (party). There are social values and ethics, namely strengthening social harmony. Social values such as mutual cooperation, caring, and strengthening relationships are reflected in this tradition, where people work together and help each other in its implementation. Apart from that, social ethics such as mutual respect, politeness, responsibility, as well as simplicity and sincerity are also taught, making this tradition not only a cultural heritage, but also a guideline in social life.

Abstract

Gajah Mada is one of the most influential figures in Indonesian history, especially during the height of the Majapahit Empire in the 14th century. As the Patih Agung under King Hayam Wuruk (1336–1359 AD), Gajah Mada played a key role in expanding the Majapahit territory and realizing his vision of uniting the archipelago through military expansion and diplomacy. Through his legendary Palapa Oath, Gajah Mada demonstrated his determination to refrain from personal pleasures until the entire archipelago was united under Majapahit rule. In the process, he successfully integrated smaller kingdoms in regions such as Sumatra, Bali, Kalimantan, and Maluku, strengthening Majapahit's position as a dominant power in Southeast Asia. Gajah Mada's success in unifying the archipelago left an important legacy in the political, cultural, and administrative development of the Majapahit Empire. This article examines Gajah Mada's leadership journey, the expansion strategies he implemented, and the long-term impact of his rule on the stability and development of Majapahit. Although the empire eventually declined, Gajah Mada's vision and spirit of unity continue to be an integral part of the national identity of Indonesia to this day.

Abstract

In the city of Palembang there is a mosque named “Al-Mahmudiyah Mosque”, which was originally known as Suro Mosque. This mosque is one of the real proofs of the strategic role as the propagation of Islam. This mosque is not only a spiritual symbol, but also a driving force of Islamic da‘wah that was very influential, especially in the Suro area in the early 20th century. The purpose of writing this study is motivated by the unique position of the mosque which rose from the period of colonial oppression, which is a religious activities were prohibited for more than three decades, and then became a symbol of spiritual and social revival of the local Muslim community. This research uses the historical method with a qualitative approach, through the tracing of archives, colonial documents, as well as interviews with community leaders and descendants of local ulama. The results of the study reveal that after the lifting of the colonial prohibition, Al-Mahmudiyah Mosque carried out multidimensional roles. Religiously, the construction of the minaret (1925) and the revitalization of Friday prayers and Islamic study circles functioned as effective tools of consolidation and education of the ummah. Thus, Al-Mahmudiyah Mosque can be regarded as a center of da‘wah and strengthening of Islamic identity that also shaped the religious dynamics of the Suro community of Palembang in the early 20th century AD.
