Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of students at SMAN 5 Palu regarding the impact of using song lyrics to improve English reading comprehension. This study focuses on the role of song lyrics in increasing reading motivation and the challenges faced by students in their use. Although reading comprehension is an essential skill, international assessment results such as PISA show that Indonesian students' reading literacy is still below the global average, causing students to often feel bored and have difficulty understanding conventional texts. This study used a descriptive qualitative design with 25 students from class X Merdeka 1 of SMAN 5 Palu selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through open questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that students had positive perceptions of the use of song lyrics. Song lyrics increase learning motivation through a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and help improve vocabulary, contextual meaning comprehension, and grasping main ideas. Challenges found include the use of slang, figurative meanings, fast pronunciation, and distractions for some students. This study concludes that song lyrics are effective authentic material in EFL reading learning.

Abstract

This library research reviews recent studies on the use of picture series to improve students’ writing skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Writing is often difficult for students because they have trouble finding ideas, organizing sentences, and using correct grammar. Many teachers and researchers have tried different ways to help students write better. One popular technique is using picture series as visual aids. This study collected data from five recent articles published between 2019 and 2024. The reviewed studies used different methods, including experimental research, classroom action research, and qualitative reviews. All studies reported positive results. Students who learned writing through picture series were more motivated, could organize their ideas better, and wrote more creatively. Even students with low English skills improved when teachers used pictures to support their writing. However, some teachers reported challenges, such as preparing good picture materials and managing large classes during picture-based activities. Despite these challenges, the findings strongly suggest that picture series are an effective and engaging tool for teaching writing. They help students become more confident and reduce the fear of writing in English. This research recommends that teachers use picture series more often, especially in EFL contexts, and that future studies explore digital picture tools to make this technique even more practical in modern classrooms.

Abstract

Light fishing techniques are widely used to improve marine fish catches by adjusting the spectrum and intensity of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to attract specific species. Grouper (Epinephelus spp.) are known to respond well to red light, although the optimal light intensity remains unclear. This study proposes a dual system consisting of a pulse-width modulation (PWM)-based red LED brightness controller and an artificial intelligence (AI) fish detection module using the YOLOv4 algorithm. LED brightness was varied at duty cycles of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 (1 kHz), producing luminous flux values between 120 and 650 lm. Field experiments conducted at the Pamekasan coast using 10 grouper samples showed that 80% of fish aggregated at a duty cycle of 150 (~420 lm at 1.5 m). ANOVA results (p0.05) indicated significant differences among light intensities, with the highest attraction observed at this level. These findings suggest the existence of an optimal light intensity threshold. Further studies with larger samples and multi-site experiments are required to validate these results and evaluate ecological impacts.

Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic Gram-positive bacterium that can colonize the oral cavity and cause various infections such as oral abscesses, stomatitis, and post-dental procedure infections. The increasing problem of antibiotic resistance has encouraged the exploration of medicinal plants as alternative antibacterial agents. Sungkai (Peronema canescens) leaves are traditionally used by the Dayak Meratus community as herbal medicine and are known to contain bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial activity. Purpose: This study aimed to analyse the phytochemical content and antibacterial activity of sungkai leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: This research used a true experimental design with a post-test-only control group design. Methanol extract of sungkai leaves was prepared using the maceration method. Phytochemical analysis included determination of flavonoid, alkaloid, and steroid contents using spectrophotometric and gravimetric methods. Antibacterial activity was tested using the disc diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar against S. aureus at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. Clindamycin was used as a positive control and sterile distilled water as a negative control. Results: Phytochemical analysis showed that sungkai leaf extract contained flavonoids (85.47 mg/mL QE), steroids (26.797%), and alkaloids (18.436%). The antibacterial test showed inhibition zones that increased with extract concentration, namely 10.19 ± 0.23 mm (25%), 12.89 ± 0.43 mm (50%), 14.80 ± 0.41 mm (75%), and 17.72 ± 0.57 mm (100%). Conclusion Sungkai leaf extract contains several bioactive compounds and demonstrates antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, indicating its potential as a natural antibacterial agent. Keywords: Antibacterial Activity, Phytochemical Analysis, Staphylococcus aureus, Sungkai Leaf Extract.

Abstract

Constructive feedback is a core component of professional learning in school-based teaching practicums, yet pre-service teachers often experience difficulty turning feedback into concrete instructional improvement. This study aims to explore how pre-service teachers in the Indonesian Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG) program receive, interpret, and enact constructive feedback during the school-based teaching practicum (Praktik Pengalaman Lapangan/PPL), including the challenges they face and the strategies they use to respond. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological design. Participants included eight student teachers and five mentor teachers from seven partner schools in Palu, Indonesia. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews conducted in Indonesian, audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings show that student teachers generally accepted feedback as supportive and developmental, but enactment remained limited. Key barriers included pedagogical-technical difficulties (translating curriculum learning outcomes into ABCD-structured learning objectives, selecting appropriate instructional models, and aligning assessment practices), classroom enactment constraints (pacing, engagement, classroom management), affective pressures (low confidence, pressure from repeated revisions, confusion due to multiple inputs), and mentoring continuity issues (limited access to mentors/supervisors and delayed clarification). Despite these barriers, student teachers developed adaptive strategies, such as note-taking, iterative revision, peer collaboration, intensive consultation, and the use of digital and AI-supported resources, while mentor teachers supported progress through gradual coaching and combined verbal and written feedback. In conclusion, feedback effectiveness in PPL depends not only on student teachers’ positive acceptance but also on the acceptance-to-enactment pathway enabled by actionable feedforward, psychologically safe interactions, and sustained dialogic mentoring. The study implies that PPG programs should strengthen mentoring coordination, provide clear exemplars and criteria, and embed structured feedback literacy support to help pre-service teachers translate feedback into observable teaching improvement.
