Abstract

This research aims to develop a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) for teaching the concept of derivatives through internalization using the real-life context of climate change. It employed a three-phase design strategy: (1) the development of a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT); (2) teaching experiments conducted with 5 students in pilot experiments and 37 Grade 11 students in final experiment; and (3) a retrospective analysis. Data was collected through observations of classroom interactions, student worksheets, tests, interviews, and field notes. The retrospective analysis involved comparing the actual learning processes to the HLT. The results indicate that students' perceptions of the derivative developed through three fundamental activities: (1) amount of change and instantaneous rate; (2) rates of change, where the derivative was introduced as a tool for understanding instantaneous changes; and (3) prediction, in which students used derivatives to forecast future climatic patterns. These exercises helped students to conceptually understand the derivative as a measure of instantaneous rate of change, while also promoting mathematical modeling and environmental awareness. The resulting LIT offers a pragmatically based approach to conveying the concept of calculus in contextualized and provides practical implications for the construction of curricula and the teaching of mathematics at the secondary school level.

Abstract

Spatial literacy is a key competency in elementary geometry. However, students often face difficulties in visualization, spatial reasoning, and spatial communication, particularly in learning cubes and cuboids. Common challenges include visualizing nets, understanding volume as layered space, and using formal spatial terminology. This study aims to develop a local instructional theory (LIT) on the volume and surface area of cubes and cuboids to strengthen spatial literacy through a culturally grounded learning trajectory situated in the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum. It involved 44 fifth-grade students (aged 10-11) and employed a validation study design consisting of preparing for the experiment, design experiment (pilot and teaching experiments), and retrospective analysis. Data were collected through classroom observations, video recordings, student worksheets, miniature products, and group discussions. The data were then analyzed qualitatively using triangulation. Findings reveal recurring misconceptions, such as incorrect cube nets, interpreting volume as a two-dimensional, conflating surface area and volume, and reliance on informal language. Students’ learning progressed from contextual exploration to formal representation using manipulatives, teacher scaffolding, and Augmented Reality (AR). The resulting LIT is defined by three principles: the integration of manipulatives and AR, an emphasis on inter-dimensional relationships, and the enhancement of formal spatial communication within a Pendekatan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) framework.

Abstract

A common mistake students make in understanding the concept of discounting, especially double discounting, is to directly add two percentages without considering the order of application and the change in the basis of subtraction after the first discount. Therefore, learning is needed that can help students overcome these problems. This study aims to develop a learning pathway to understand the concept of discounting through the context of the New Math Pempek menu list by utilizing the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education approach. The method used is a design research type validation study consisting of: preliminary design, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. The research subjects were 35 students of MTs. Data were collected through video recordings of the learning process, student worksheets, observation notes of student discussions, and interviews, then analyzed retrospectively. The results showed that the learning trajectory began with students understanding information from the menu, acting as buyers, estimating prices after discounts using a bar model, followed by a discussion of double discounts, and solving problems related to discounts in everyday life. This finding confirms the importance of using cultural contexts and real-life experiences to develop and facilitate students' understanding of mathematical concepts, so that learning becomes more meaningful.

Abstract

Proportional reasoning constitutes a foundational competence in learning ratio and proportion. However, numerous junior high school students continue to exhibit reliance on additive reasoning rather than multiplicative reasoning when addressing proportional problems. This study aims to develop a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) that integrates agricultural activities to foster students’ proportional reasoning within the domain of ratio and proportion. Employing a design research methodology of the validation study type, the investigation comprised three interconnected phases: preparation for the experiment, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. The design experiment was conducted in two iterative cycles: a pilot experiment involving eight seventh-grade students and a subsequent teaching experiment involving 31 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Belitang, Indonesia. Data were collected through student activity sheets, classroom observations, interviews, and assessments, and analyzed qualitatively using retrospective analysis. The findings reveal that agricultural practices—such as rice fertilization, plowing, rice field exploration via Google Earth, and rice planting row marking—serve as meaningful contextual anchors that support students in constructing conceptual understandings of ratio, rate, scale, and proportion. Engagement in these contextually grounded activities enabled students to compare quantities, identify unit rates, and represent proportional relationships through models such as ratio tables and double number lines. These learning trajectories facilitated a gradual shift from additive to multiplicative reasoning. The study underscores the pedagogical potential of authentic agrarian contexts to promote the progressive development of proportional reasoning and to provide a transferable framework for context-based mathematics instruction.

Abstract

Understanding the surface area of three-dimensional shapes remains challenging for elementary students, particularly in distinguishing between area and perimeter and in connecting two-dimensional representations to three-dimensional objects. This study aims to trace elementary students’ learning trajectories on the surface area of cubes and cuboids through museum-based activities to support spatial literacy development. The study employed a design research methodology with a validation study approach, consisting of preliminary design, a pilot experiment, a teaching experiment, and a retrospective analysis. Participants were 44 fifth-grade students from an elementary school in Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations, students’ worksheets, video recordings, and interviews, and analyzed qualitatively by comparing the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with the Actual Learning Trajectory (ALT). The results show that the museum context supported students’ spatial visualization, reasoning, and communication by enabling them to identify geometric attributes of artefacts, construct and validate nets, and derive surface area formulas through guided reinvention. The targeted use of Augmented Reality (AR) further supported students during critical transitions between two-and three-dimensional representations. The synthesis of the HLT and ALT yielded a validated Learning Trajectory, which was abstracted into a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) for teaching surface area in elementary geometry.

Abstract

Geometry is fundamental in mathematics education for developing spatial reasoning and understanding abstract relationships. However, students often struggle with its abstract nature. Dynamic geometry software such as GeoGebra offers interactive visualization that can enhance conceptual understanding. This study aims to examine research trends, instructional strategies, and gaps in GeoGebra-based geometry learning.A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, complemented by bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. From an initial pool of 119 studies published between 2020 and 2025, 15 articles were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria. The selected studies were analyzed to identify patterns in pedagogy, outcomes, and research focus. The findings indicate that GeoGebra effectively supports innovative instructional approaches, including project-based learning, problem-based learning, and flipped learning. Its use significantly improves students’ conceptual understanding of geometry, particularly in topics such as geometric transformations. Additionally, GeoGebra enhances students’ motivation, confidence, and engagement in learning mathematics.Despite these benefits, the integration of GeoGebra with culturally contextualized learning remains limited. Few studies address basic geometric concepts, such as lines and angles, within local cultural contexts (e.g., traditional dance patterns), indicating an underexplored area in current research.GeoGebra is a powerful tool for enhancing geometry learning; however, future research should focus on developing culturally responsive, technology-integrated approaches to bridge existing gaps and enrich mathematics education.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to develop and assess the feasibility of learning videos, created with the Canva application, for matrix multiplication material for eleventh-grade senior high school students. The study employed a development research method using a development model combined with Tessmer’s formative evaluation, which includes the stages of preliminary, design, and formative evaluation (self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field test). The research subjects consisted of three expert validators, namely a content expert, a media/design expert, and a language expert, as well as eleventh-grade students involved in the one-to-one test (3 students), small group test (9 students), and field test (36 students). Data collection techniques included needs analysis questionnaires, walkthroughs or expert validation, student response questionnaires, and pretest–posttest assessments. Data analysis was conducted by calculating validity and practicality percentages using a Likert scale, and effectiveness was tested using a paired-samples t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicate that the developed learning video falls into the very valid category based on expert assessments. Practical testing shows that the media is efficient and receives positive responses from students. Effectiveness testing at the field test stage reveals a significant difference between the average pretest and posttest scores, indicating that the Canva-assisted learning video is efficacious in improving students’ learning outcomes in matrix multiplication. Therefore, the developed learning video is declared valid, practical, and effective for use in eleventh-grade senior high school mathematics learning. Keywords: Canva; Matrix Multiplication; Mathematics; Media Development

Abstract

The low level of mathematical literacy among Indonesian students is reflected in the average results of PISA 2022, indicating the need to develop PISA-style test instruments. Therefore, this study aims to develop PISA-based questions on numbers that are valid and reliable. The method used is a development study consisting of preliminary and formative evaluation stages. The preliminary stage includes analyzing original PISA questions, student needs, curriculum, and determining the material. The formative evaluation stage includes self-evaluation, expert review, one-on-one, and small group discussions. The format of the questions developed is two multiple-choice questions and four contextual descriptions equivalent to PISA. Content validation was tested qualitatively through expert comments, while quantitative analysis was conducted after testing the questions on six junior high school students in Palembang who were selected purposively. Quantitative analysis includes item validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminative power. The research results indicate that the questions are valid and reliable based on content appropriateness, ease of understanding, smooth implementation, and time efficiency. These questions can be used as a training tool to improve students' mathematical abilities in accordance with PISA standards. However, this study has limitations due to the limited sample size and only reaching a small group, so it is recommended that further research be conducted with a larger sample size and up to the field test stage.

Abstract

The persistent challenges students face in understanding integers indicate the need for learning approaches that connect abstract mathematical concepts with meaningful real-life experiences. Although culturally grounded contexts have been widely recommended in mathematics education, there remains a limited understanding of how specific traditional games can be systematically interpreted to reveal their embedded mathematical structures and support conceptual learning. This study seeks to investigate the Jejamok traditional game from North Lampung through an ethnomathematics perspective to identify its potential as a context for learning integer concepts and as a basis for developing instructional media. A qualitative exploratory approach was employed, involving literature review, field observations, and interviews with local community members and teachers. The findings reveal that Jejamok embodies several key mathematical ideas related to integers, including (1) positive and negative values represented through capture and release actions, (2) addition and subtraction of integers through score changes, and (3) comparison of quantities and strategic decision-making based on game situations. These concepts emerge naturally from the game’s scoring system and player interactions, providing a meaningful bridge between informal experiences and formal mathematical understanding. Furthermore, the game structure reflects a form of situated mathematical representation that supports progressive mathematization within the PMRI framework. In addition, Jejamok reflects important cultural values such as cooperation, sportsmanship, and nengah nyappur, which contribute to social learning. These findings suggest that Jejamok can serve not only as a contextual learning resource but also as a conceptual foundation for developing culturally responsive instructional media, such as e-comics. This study contributes to the development of culturally grounded mathematics instruction by offering an empirically supported and theoretically informed model for connecting local cultural practices with formal mathematical learning.
