Abstract

School mathematics is designed to equip students with foundational mathematical knowledge while simultaneously fostering mathematical literacy, including numeracy, essential for effective problem-solving. Achieving these objectives requires students to engage with mathematics through contexts that are relevant to their prior knowledge and lived experiences, thereby facilitating a more meaningful mastery of mathematical concepts and literacies. The tourism sector offers a rich context for such engagement, presenting opportunities to connect enumeration rules and numeracy with real-world scenarios. This study investigates the integration of enumeration rules and numeracy through tourism-based learning activities situated in Kerinci, Jambi. The aim is to inform the development of learning resources that are locally relevant and reflect the authentic experiences of students. Employing an exploratory qualitative methodology, this research involved field observations and semi-structured interviews with local tourism practitioners and mathematics educators. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify genuine tourism-related activities in Kerinci that illustrate the application of enumeration principles and numeracy skills. Findings indicate that a range of tourism activities including selecting transportation modes, accommodations, destinations, travel routes, and tourist attractions are inherently linked to enumeration (determining the number of possible choices) and numeracy (applying quantitative reasoning to make optimal decisions). By situating enumeration and numeracy within everyday tourism practices, this study demonstrates how local contexts can enhance mathematics instruction. The results provide a foundation for future design research focused on developing and evaluating instructional trajectories that incorporate local tourism scenarios into mathematics teaching, particularly regarding enumeration and numeracy concepts.

Abstract

The low level of mathematical literacy among Indonesian students is reflected in the average results of PISA 2022, indicating the need to develop PISA-style test instruments. Therefore, this study aims to develop PISA-based questions on numbers that are valid and reliable. The method used is a development study consisting of preliminary and formative evaluation stages. The preliminary stage includes analyzing original PISA questions, student needs, curriculum, and determining the material. The formative evaluation stage includes self-evaluation, expert review, one-on-one, and small group discussions. The format of the questions developed is two multiple-choice questions and four contextual descriptions equivalent to PISA. Content validation was tested qualitatively through expert comments, while quantitative analysis was conducted after testing the questions on six junior high school students in Palembang who were selected purposively. Quantitative analysis includes item validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discriminative power. The research results indicate that the questions are valid and reliable based on content appropriateness, ease of understanding, smooth implementation, and time efficiency. These questions can be used as a training tool to improve students' mathematical abilities in accordance with PISA standards. However, this study has limitations due to the limited sample size and only reaching a small group, so it is recommended that further research be conducted with a larger sample size and up to the field test stage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms of metacognitive errors made by junior high school students in solving questions developed by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) on number content. Metacognitive skills are part of a higher-order thinking process that includes awareness and control of one's own thinking process, including strategy planning, monitoring implementation, and evaluating results. In the context of PISA-like math problem that require contextual and complex problem solving, these skills are crucial. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research subjects consisted of three VIII grade students who were identified according to the categories of high, medium, and low mathematical ability. The main instruments were PISA-like math problem and interview guidelines based on metacognitive indicators. Data were obtained using written assessments and comprehensive interviews, then examined through qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that all students, regardless of mathematics ability level, made metacognitive errors. The most dominant errors occurred at the planning and evaluation stages. Students with low ability had difficulty understanding the problem, identifying relevant information, and designing a solution strategy. While students with medium and high abilities tend not to evaluate steps and results optimally. The results underscore the significance of enharing metacognitive abilities in mathematics education to foster reflective thinking and tackle complex problems.

Abstract

A tourism route is a sequence of tourist attractions visited. Students are familiar with tour activities and often plan tourism routes to visit several tourist attractions. Students' experience and knowledge about tourism routes can be used as a context for teaching the rule of product. Therefore, this research aims to design a learning trajectory for the rule of product using the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach in the Kerinci nature tourism route context. The research method used is design research with a validation study type, which consists of three stages: preparation and design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The subjects involved in this research were 11 third-semester mathematics education students at a university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instruments include learning video recordings, student work results, field notes, and test sheets. The research results show that learning trajectories designed in the context of tourism routes can help students discover, understand, and use the rule of product in solving relevant mathematical problems. The learning tracjectory consists of four activities: making a list of Kerinci tourist attractions, determining the location of several tourist attractions on a sketch map, arranging tourist attractions in tourism routes, and solving problems regarding possible tourism routes. This research shows that the designed learning trajectory is vital in helping students discover and understand the rule of product and apply them to solving relevant problems.

Abstract

This study developed an Android-based mathematics learning media for three-dimensional geometry, focusing on distance concepts using Plomp’s (Plomp & Nieveen, 2013) educational design research framework. The development involved preliminary research and prototyping, including expert review, one-to-one evaluation (5 students), small group evaluation (10 students), and a field test with 30 twelfth-grade students in a one-case study. Data were collected through expert review, practicality questionnaires, classroom observations, interview, and pretest–posttest spatial assessments. The expert review confirmed the validity of the content, linguistic, instructional design, and instructional media communication aspects, while practicality evaluation showed that the media was easy to use and engaging. Field test results indicated positive trends in students’ spatial abilities, with improvements in spatial visualization (+32.22%), spatial relations (+15.11%), and spatial orientation (+12.78%), and a significant pretest–posttest difference (t(29) = 7.22, p < 0.001), which supported the media’s potential to scaffold spatial reasoning within the design research context. Although the normalized gain was modest (0.24), this result underscores the gradual nature of spatial development and provides formative input for design refinement. Two design principles were identified: (1) integrating interactive three-dimensional visualization to bridge iconic and abstract representations, and (2) implementing active scaffolding to connect visual intuition with precise mathematical procedures.
