Abstract

Number patterns are a mathematical topic that connects arithmetic and algebra while strengthening students’ mathematical reasoning foundations. Therefore, the teaching of this topic needs to be designed in a meaningful way. This study aims to describe the learning design of number patterns based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) using the context of Aur Lake tourism for Grade VIII students at SMP IT Al-Furqon Wonosari, Musi Rawas Regency. The research method employed was design research with a validation studies type, consisting of three stages: (1) preparing for the experiment, which included a literature review, discussions with teachers, and the development of a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT); (2) the design experiment, which involved a piloting experiment and a teaching experiment; and (3) the retrospective analysis. The research subjects were Grade VIII students at SMP IT Al-Furqon Wonosari, with six students participating in the piloting experiment and twenty-three students in the teaching experiment. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, documentation/video recordings, and student activity sheets. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques. The results of this study produced a learning design for number patterns based on PMRI using the Aur Lake context, which can guide students in understanding and generalizing number patterns.

Abstract

In everyday life, individuals are required to be cautious in making decisions and analyzing the possibilities of various alternatives. Probability theory emerges as one of the important branches of mathematics that provides an understanding of uncertainty and ways to measure the likelihood of an event. However, field observations reveal that many students still encounter difficulties in understanding probability, particularly in the subtopic of combinations. These difficulties are generally caused by abstract learning processes, limited contextual activities, and the lack of connection between mathematics and real-life experiences or local culture close to students’ lives. This study aims to design probability learning based on Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (IRME) by utilizing the Bekulo tradition in Rejang Lebong Regency as a relevant local cultural context. The method employed is design research with a validation study type, involving ninth-grade students of SMP IT Salsabillah Rejang Lebong as research subjects. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and interviews. In this study, the researchers developed a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) adapted to the Bekulo tradition context. The results show that integrating IRME with cultural contexts can effectively support the development of students’ understanding of the concept of combinations in a more meaningful way. These findings affirm that culturally rooted learning designs not only enrich students’ learning experiences but also foster their appreciation of local wisdom while making mathematics more relevant to everyday life.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is a core competency in mathematics education and a central focus of competency-based assessment. With the rapid advancement of digital technology, assessment websites have increasingly been utilized to measure and support students’ problem-solving skills. However, systematic studies that synthesize their characteristics, approaches, and contributions remain limited. This study aims to systematically review the literature on the use of assessment websites in enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Relevant articles were retrieved from Google Scholar and Scopus using keywords related to assessment websites and mathematical problem-solving. The inclusion criteria focused on websites that provide mathematical problems and allow students to access their results. The selected studies were analyzed thematically to identify assessment types, key website features, problem-solving frameworks, and their contributions. The findings indicate that assessment websites effectively support students’ problem-solving abilities, particularly through the provision of non-routine problems and immediate feedback on students’ work. The predominant framework identified is Polya’s problem-solving stages. These findings highlight the importance of developing digital assessment platforms that foster authentic and sustainable problem-solving skills in mathematics education.

Abstract

Background: Understanding percentages poses persistent challenges for elementary students, particularly when the percent symbol is interpreted as a standalone number rather than as a relational expression of “per hundred.” Instruction that is detached from meaningful contexts often restricts students’ ability to connect percentages with fractions and decimals. Aims: Responding to this issue, the study seeks to develop and validate a PMRI-guided learning trajectory that situates percentage concepts within the local cultural practice of melemang. Method: Employing design research of the validation study type, the study involved 28 elementary students and was conducted in three phases: preliminary design to formulate a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT), teaching experiment to implement and observe the instructional sequence, and retrospective analysis to refine the HLT into an empirically grounded Actual Learning Trajectory (ALT). Data from classroom observations, student work, interviews, and video recordings were analyzed qualitatively to examine students’ conceptual development. Results: The findings indicate that engaging students with the melemang context enabled them to interpret percentage as a comparison to one hundred. Through a structured progression from concrete representations to bar models and 100-grids, students established meaningful connections among fractions, decimals, and percentages. Conclusion: The resulting learning trajectory demonstrates how culturally grounded PMRI-based instruction can support coherent conceptual development and inform context-sensitive mathematics teaching practices.

Abstract

This study addressed students’ difficulties in understanding the median as a conceptual measure of central tendency rather than a procedural computation. It aimed to design and validate a STEM-based learning trajectory to support students’ understanding of the median through coffee pH measurement activities. The study employed a design research methodology of the validation study type, consisting of a preliminary design, pilot experiment, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The subjects were tenth-grade vocational high school students in Palembang majoring in culinary arts. Data were collected through classroom observations, student worksheets, semi-structured interviews, and video recordings. The results showed that the STEM-based learning trajectory enabled students to progress from concrete data collection to data organization, identification of the middle position, formal median calculation, and contextual interpretation. The instructional design can support students’ conceptual understanding. A STEM-based learning trajectory using the context of coffee pH measurement can serve as an alternative instructional strategy to help students gradually develop a conceptual understanding of the median while simultaneously enhancing statistical literacy through authentic experiences of collecting, processing, and interpreting data.

Abstract

Conceptual difficulties and visual representation barriers are often major challenges in learning integers, especially related to understanding negative numbers and mathematical operations such as addition and subtraction. This study aims to identify the problems faced by students in learning integers, evaluate the effectiveness of various teaching methods, and propose innovative approaches to improve students' understanding. The methodology used is a systematic review based on Systematic Literature Review (SLR), by analyzing relevant research articles using PRISMA guidelines. This study examines various learning strategies, such as the use of realistic contexts, innovative visual models, manipulatives, and interactive technology. The results showed that a real-world context- based approach and the use of visual models can significantly improve students' understanding compared to conventional methods. Students who engaged in manipulative-based learning and class discussions also showed better mathematical thinking flexibility. These findings highlight the need for further exploration of the use of real contexts, more innovative visual models, and the application of gamification technology in integer learning. In conclusion, integer learning requires a more innovative approach by integrating realistic contexts, new visual models, and interactive technology. This not only increases student engagement but also supports the development of conceptual and procedural abilities more effectively.

Abstract

Algebra is a fundamental component of mathematics education that supports students’ success in higher-level mathematical learning. However, many students struggle to understand algebraic concepts due to their abstract nature and the limited use of effective instructional strategies. This scoping review aims to (1) identify how algebra teaching activities are represented in the literature, (2) explore the main instructional themes and approaches discussed, and (3) examine existing research gaps that require further study. A total of 143 studies published between 2015 and 2025 were retrieved from the Scopus database, and after a rigorous screening process, six studies met the inclusion criteria for full analysis. The review identified five dominant instructional themes: contextual problem-based learning, visual and concrete representations, technology-enhanced and game-based learning, collaborative discussions, and reflective reasoning. These approaches were found to enhance students’ engagement, conceptual understanding, and algebraic reasoning. Nevertheless, significant gaps remain in early algebra instruction, teacher professional development, and the integration of emerging technologies in classroom practice. The findings underscore the need for innovative, inclusive, and technology-integrated teaching strategies to strengthen students’ algebraic thinking and improve the quality of mathematics education.
