Abstract

The current cultural context has become a significant focus in mathematics education, serving not only as a bridge to formal understanding but also as a means of cultural preservation. This study aims to analyse the use of Palembang's cultural context in mathematics education through the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach. The analysis was conducted on articles indexed in Scopus and Google Scholar based on publication year, content, methods, student skills developed, and research findings. Data analysis techniques were based on the PIECES framework (Planning, Identifying, Evaluating, Collecting/Elaborating, Explaining, and Summarising). From the selection process, 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were obtained. The analysis results showed that the dominant cultural context of Palembang included traditional food (pempek), traditional fabrics (songket and jumputan), and trading activities on the Musi River. The most frequently studied mathematical topics were geometry and algebra, with the design research method used as an approach to design learning and develop media such as worksheets, educational videos, and evaluation instruments. The students' ability most frequently focused on was conceptual understanding. These findings provide significant contributions to educators and researchers in developing context-based cultural mathematics learning through the PMRI approach.

Abstract

Statistical literacy has emerged as a central competence in mathematics education, particularly for prospective teachers who must be able to interpret, analyze, and critically evaluate data in a world increasingly shaped by information and statistics. However, previous research shows that many prospective teachers continue to struggle with developing statistical literacy, especially in connecting abstract concepts to meaningful contexts. This gap highlights the need for instructional designs that not only strengthen statistical reasoning but also draw on culturally embedded practices to enhance relevance and engagement. Addressing this challenge, the present study develops a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) that supports prospective teachers’ statistical literacy through the integration of local cultural contexts in South Sumatra, designed within the framework of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) as adapted in Indonesia, namely Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI). Employing a design research methodology, the study was conducted in three phases: a preliminary investigation, a design experiment (pilot and teaching experiment), and a retrospective analysis. The resulting LIT was structured around three context-based learning trajectories, each targeting a key dimension of statistical literacy: data visualization, data interpretation, and critical evaluation. Instructional activities were grounded in authentic cultural contexts—such as Pempek demand during Ramadan, the Bekarang Iwak fishing tradition, and coffee productivity in Pagar Alam—which were used to bridge statistical concepts with learners lived experiences. Findings from the teaching experiments indicate that prospective teachers demonstrated notable shifts from procedural to conceptual reasoning and from descriptive analysis to reflective critique. Participants also showed improved ability to select appropriate graphical representations, interpret contextual data, and critically assess the credibility and sufficiency of statistical information. These outcomes underscore the potential of culturally relevant instructional design to foster holistic statistical literacy. The study contributes both theoretically and practically by offering a validated model for integrating cultural contexts into mathematics education, thereby enriching prospective teachers’ curriculum and providing a replicable approach for diverse educational settings.

Abstract

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have difficulty understanding abstract concepts, such as monetary values, due to limitations in executive functioning and concept generalization. This study aimed to develop and test a learning trajectory for understanding monetary values through a modified Monopoly game according to the characteristics of autistic students. The study employed a design research approach with validation type, using hypothetical and actual learning trajectory (HLT-ALT) analysis through the stages of preparation, design experiments (pilot and teaching experiments), and retrospective analysis of the data. The research subjects were eight autistic students at the junior high school level at SLB Bina Autis Mandiri, Indonesia. Data were collected through student activity sheets, observations, interviews, and documentation and then analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that the learning trajectory consisting of four activities (playing modified Monopoly, recognizing the value of money, counting the number of pictorial patches of money, and adding up the value of money) effectively helped students gradually understand the concept of monetary value. Game-based activities also increased students' engagement and understanding of the material. This study contributes to a replicable and inclusive learning trajectory that integrates structured gameplay with mathematical reasoning for students with autism.

Abstract

School mathematics is designed to equip students with foundational mathematical knowledge while simultaneously fostering mathematical literacy, including numeracy, essential for effective problem-solving. Achieving these objectives requires students to engage with mathematics through contexts that are relevant to their prior knowledge and lived experiences, thereby facilitating a more meaningful mastery of mathematical concepts and literacies. The tourism sector offers a rich context for such engagement, presenting opportunities to connect enumeration rules and numeracy with real-world scenarios. This study investigates the integration of enumeration rules and numeracy through tourism-based learning activities situated in Kerinci, Jambi. The aim is to inform the development of learning resources that are locally relevant and reflect the authentic experiences of students. Employing an exploratory qualitative methodology, this research involved field observations and semi-structured interviews with local tourism practitioners and mathematics educators. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify genuine tourism-related activities in Kerinci that illustrate the application of enumeration principles and numeracy skills. Findings indicate that a range of tourism activities including selecting transportation modes, accommodations, destinations, travel routes, and tourist attractions are inherently linked to enumeration (determining the number of possible choices) and numeracy (applying quantitative reasoning to make optimal decisions). By situating enumeration and numeracy within everyday tourism practices, this study demonstrates how local contexts can enhance mathematics instruction. The results provide a foundation for future design research focused on developing and evaluating instructional trajectories that incorporate local tourism scenarios into mathematics teaching, particularly regarding enumeration and numeracy concepts.
