Abstract

Background: Islamic higher education in Indonesia has undergone significant changes in the last two decades. The institutional shift from IAIN to UIN has brought epistemological challenges in integrating religious and rational sciences. The Wahdatul 'Ulum paradigm developed at UIN North Sumatra aims to resolve scientific dualism by using a scientific framework based on tauhid. Purpose: Wahdatul 'Ulum is an epistemological paradigm that integrates Islamic knowledge and rational knowledge within a consistent and transformative framework. Method: This study uses a qualitative case study with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, analysis of institutional documents, and participatory observation at UINSU. Results: Findings show that the Wahdatul 'Ulum paradigm is built on three main foundations: ontological, namely tauhid as the essence of all knowledge; epistemological, namely the integration of revelation and reason; and axiological, namely a focus on social transformation through education. Conclusion: The Wahdatul 'Ulum paradigm transcends theological debates and functions as an integrative scientific model that reinterprets the purpose of Islamic higher education and contributes to the global discourse on the decolonization of knowledge.

Abstract

The growing trend of Muslim travel to various global destinations necessitates the concept of halal tourism, which prioritises not only the fulfilment of Islamic law but also Islamic ethical and spiritual values. However, the implementation of halal tourism has tended to be reductive, focusing primarily on halal food and prayer facilities, without exploring more substantive Quranic dimensions. This study aims to explore the meaning of riḥlah in the Quran based on Ash-Shaʻrāwī’s interpretation and examine its implications for contemporary Muslim travel ethics. Using a qualitative method with a thematic approach and analysis of Ash-Shaʻrāwī’s thematic interpretations, data were collected from tafsir books, supporting literature, and secondary sources on halal tourism. The results show that riḥlah, from the Ash-Shaʻrāwī perspective, is not merely a physical activity of moving from one place to another, but a spiritual and epistemological process of knowing God through His signs in nature. Riḥlah also has social, economic, and educational functions, emphasising morality, responsibility, and self-reflection. In the context of halal tourism, these values form the basis for establishing a responsible, environmentally conscious, and respectful Muslim travel ethic.

Abstract

Nowadays, along with the dynamics of the times, education is required to transform the learning process, including Islamic religious education. Sharp criticism of the development of epistemology and learning processes that are less reflective and progressive has caused Islamic religious education to be considered to have no significant impact on developing the potential of students in realizing perfect human beings. Based on these problems, academics conduct discourse and evaluation related to multi-perspective Islamic religious education, one of which is through the medium of implementing contextual Islamic religious education. The study entitled Mainstreaming Meaningful Learning Through Contextual Islamic Religious Education basically aims to describe the concept of meaningful, contextual learning and its actualization in Islamic religious education. This study is a library research conducted by writing, clarifying, reducing and presenting data from various documents. The results of the study indicate that contextual learning as an approach in learning is one of the most important aspects in instilling and actualizing meaningfulness in learning. Through four main characteristics activating knowledge, understanding knowledge, applying knowledge, and reflecting knowledge, students are expected to not only understand knowledge but also implement and reflect on it, ensuring it is appropriate and meaningful. Contextual learning can be implemented in three main domains: first, through contextual learning; second, through the development of contextual Islamic religious education materials; and third, through curriculum development that emphasizes contextual aspects.

Abstract

Accurate classification of rice plant diseases is essential for early intervention and precision agriculture. However, real-world datasets often suffer from complex backgrounds, high-dimensional features, and severe class imbalances, which compromise classification performance. This study proposes an integrated framework combining image segmentation using U-Net, feature selection via Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), hybrid sampling to handle class imbalance, and final classification using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Segmentation isolates disease-affected areas, ACO optimizes feature subsets, and hybrid sampling balances class distribution using undersampling and SMOTE. The proposed method was tested on four rice leaf disease datasets—Brown Spot, Leaf Blast, Leaf Blight, and Leaf Scald—exhibiting significant class imbalance. Experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms baseline models (SegNet, PspNet, and E-Net) across multiple metrics: Accuracy, IoU, Precision, and Recall. This indicates the framework’s robustness and potential for real-world deployment in precision agriculture. Future work will focus on model compression and real-time implementation in IoT systems.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and the integration of multicultural values in the curriculum of the Primary Madrasah Teacher Education (PGMI) program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Specifically, the study examines the alignment between the formulation of learning outcomes, classroom instructional practices, and assessment strategies, while also identifying challenges in implementing OBE within the context of Islamic higher education institutions (PTKI). A qualitative approach, employing a case study design, was used. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with lecturers and program administrators, classroom observations, and document analysis of the curriculum and OBE-based Semester Learning Plans (RPS). The data were analyzed thematically through stages of data reduction, categorization, and interpretation. The findings indicate that the PGMI curriculum has been developed in accordance with OBE principles, as reflected in the formulation of Program Learning Outcomes (CPL), Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK), and a structured curriculum mapping process. However, the implementation of OBE and the integration of multicultural values in classroom practice remain inconsistent. Variations in instructional methods and assessment approaches suggest that constructive alignment has not yet been fully achieved. This study proposes the concept of semi-alignment to explain the gap between curriculum design and instructional practice. The findings highlight that the successful implementation of OBE in PTKI requires strengthened lecturer capacity, consistent application of authentic assessment, and sustained institutional support through systematic monitoring and mentoring mechanisms.

Abstract

Cultural literacy in early childhood is important for shaping identity and fostering an appreciative attitude towards diversity from an early age. This study aims to develop a contextual guidebook based on storybooks to strengthen cultural literacy for children aged 5–6 years and assess its feasibility and implementation in early childhood education. The study used a Research and Development (R&D) method with the 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate). The dissemination stage was carried out through a limited trial, focusing on the product's feasibility and implementation, rather than broad effectiveness testing. Data were collected through observations, interviews, validation by content, language, and media experts, and a limited trial. Data were analyzed descriptively and quantitatively (percentage and N-gain) to assess the product's feasibility and the changes in children's cultural literacy achievements before and after using the guidebook. The results showed that the guidebook was deemed feasible based on expert evaluation, and the limited trial indicated an improvement in cultural literacy, particularly in children’s interest in cultural stories, involvement in storytelling activities, comprehension of story content, and emotional responses during learning. These findings suggest that the guidebook is practical for use by PAUD teachers and supports the development of instructional materials based on local cultural stories.
