Abstract

The integration of statistical software such as SPSS in higher education represents a pivotal advancement, yet limited research has systematically examined how students perceive its pedagogical usefulness and accessibility. Prior studies seldom differentiate between the cognitive and affective dimensions influencing the efficacy of SPSS-assisted learning, leaving a gap in understanding its broader impact on student engagement and competence. Addressing this gap, the present research investigates the novelty of SPSS implementation within statistics coursework, focusing specifically on student perceptions regarding its usefulness and ease of use. Employing a descriptive mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected from 85 respondents through a validated and reliable questionnaire comprising 13 items, complemented by qualitative insights from in-depth interviews using open-ended prompts. The findings indicate that student perceptions are predominantly favorable for both usefulness (79.21%) and ease of use (75.18%). Qualitative analysis substantiates these results, highlighting accelerated data analysis, simplified processing, and enhanced visualization as key strengths, while noting initial challenges faced by some participants. The study underscores that optimizing the educational value of SPSS necessitates comprehensive instructional support, thereby informing future curricular improvements designed to foster numeracy and analytical proficiency in statistical learning.

Abstract

Didactic transposition helps bridge the gap between formal mathematical knowledge and classroom instruction, ensuring more effective material delivery aligned with students’ needs. The purpose of this study was to explore how linear equations of one variable are taught to eighth-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah based on the didactic transposition approach. This study focuses on the knowledge transfer stage of a didactic transposition study on linear equations of one variable, using qualitative research with a descriptive method. The study’s results showed that the presentation of material in the teaching and learning process led to a shift in understanding of linear equations of one variable from the concept of linear equations of one variable in a didactic context. Incomplete explanations of linear equations with one variable cause learning obstacles. Ontogenic obstacles arise from students’ cognitive limitations, epistemic obstacles from conceptual complexity, and didactic obstacles from ineffective teaching strategies. This study is conducted because didactic transposition can bridge the gap between formal mathematical knowledge and classroom instruction, yet it may also create learning obstacles. The findings can help improve teaching strategies by addressing conceptual gaps and learning obstacles, making mathematics instruction more effective for students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah.

Abstract

Background Physical fitness plays a crucial role in supporting elementary school students’ ability to engage in learning activities without experiencing excessive fatigue. Adequate fitness levels enable students to maintain concentration and participate actively in school tasks. In Indonesia, information regarding the physical fitness of elementary school children remains limited, despite its importance for promoting overall health and learning readiness. Objectives This systematic review aims to examine the existing scientific literature on the role of traditional games as a learning strategy to improve physical fitness among elementary school students in Indonesia. Methods A systematic search was conducted across four major databases—ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The search strategy employed a combination of keywords, including (“traditional games” OR “play model”) AND “physical fitness” AND “students” AND “elementary school.” The review process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, including screening, eligibility assessment, and data extraction from relevant studies. Results The findings indicate that traditional games positively contribute to improving students’ physical fitness. These games are typically designed using a play-based approach and incorporate activities aligned with children’s fundamental motor skills and developmental stages. Improvements occur because traditional games encourage active participation, increase movement engagement, and support effective fitness development within physical education settings. Conclusion Traditional games represent an effective and culturally relevant strategy for enhancing physical fitness among elementary school students in Indonesia. Their integration into physical education classes can promote active learning and contribute to better health outcomes. This review provides comprehensive evidence on the pedagogical value of traditional games in improving children’s physical fitness, highlights their relevance for culturally grounded physical education practices, and offers insights for researchers, educators, and policymakers seeking to optimize school-based fitness interventions.

Abstract

The professional competence of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) teachers in teaching ratio material is a vital factor in improving students’ understanding of mathematics, making it important to examine MI teachers’ knowledge of mathematics content. This study aims to analyze teachers’ professional skills, including their understanding of the concept of ratios, their attitudes toward preparing the learning process, such as creating teaching materials aligned with the curriculum, and their understanding of students’ characteristics and how they design learning. The results of this study provide an initial foundation for further research, which can help teachers develop learning methods through didactic studies. The subjects of this research are MI grade VI teachers in Bandung Regency, from six schools. The method used is a descriptive approach with a prospective analysis stage based on Didactical Design Research (DDR). Data collection involved teacher reflection sheets, exploratory interviews, observations, and document reviews. The findings indicate that teachers’ professional competence in knowledge of learning content and teaching methods remains at level 2, while their understanding of students’ characteristics and learning styles is at level 3. Reflection sheets and interviews reveal that teachers face difficulties beginning with defining ratios, particularly in understanding that the ratio of a to b differs from the ratio of b to a, and in solving problems involving equal proportions. Often, teachers plan their lessons with a simple sequence of materials in a journal, without considering the epistemic and systemic aspects of the content or validating their presentation and practice questions found in textbooks. MI teachers also find it challenging to select concrete teaching methods for ratios before moving to an abstract understanding, especially given the limited time. Based on these findings, there is a clear need for programs to improve teachers’ competence through didactic studies, equipping them to anticipate and address potential obstacles and enabling them to design compelling learning experiences. Since teachers’ professional competence in teaching ratios directly impacts students’ understanding of math, exploring their content knowledge is essential. This study contributes to empowering teachers through didactic design research, a necessary approach to enhancing teacher competence.

Abstract

Teachers’ self-assessment is recognized as a key mechanism for fostering professional growth and improving instructional practices. It allows educators to reflect on and develop their teaching performance autonomously. However, in the Indonesian context, there is a scarcity of self-assessment instruments that are both effective and measurable. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design to analyze existing teacher self-assessment instruments. Indicators from several available tools were examined and categorized using a theoretical framework comprising three core domains: knowledge of content, knowledge of pedagogy and practice, and knowledge of students. The analysis resulted in the identification of seven essential components for teacher self-assessment: (1) connecting students’ prior knowledge with new content; (2) effective delivery of instructional materials; (3) addressing students’ errors, difficulties, and misconceptions; (4) promoting active student participation; (5) building rapport among students and between teachers and students; (6) effective use of learning resources, media, and technology; and (7) selecting, using, and following up on assessments. These components were further structured across three developmental levels to reflect teachers’ growth. The proposed components serve as a foundation for developing more comprehensive and contextually relevant self-assessment instruments for teachers. By aligning self-assessment practices with pedagogical goals and classroom realities, these tools can support sustained professional development and instructional improvement.
