Abstract

AbstractDriven by the elementary students’ low self-efficacy (SE) in learning mathematics, this study aims to delve deeper into the interaction between learning based on Mathematical Prior Ability (MPA) and the improvement of students' SE after the implementation of Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach. In total, 119 elementary school students from Purwakarta, Subang, Karawang dan Bekasi participated. Both tests and non-tests were used as the instruments of this study. Using a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group, a two-way ANOVA was used as the technical analysis of the data. The research results revealed that the learning factors are higher than 0.05 i.e. (0.235), the significance of the MPA factor is smaller than 0.05 i.e. (0.030), and the significance of the interaction factor (Learning MPA) is higher than 0.05 i.e. (0.301). It can be concluded that there is an interaction between learning (CPA and conventional) based on MPA and the students’ SE. Thus, the CPA approach can be used to enhance the students’ SE so that they can learn with higher confidence. Keywords: concrete pictorial abstract, self-efficacy, mathematical prior ability. Abstract

Covid-19 changes human habits, especially the learning process. Teaching and learning activities that are usually carried out offline now must be conducted online. The research was motivated by the students' assumptions about mathematics which were considered difficult. Students felt overwhelmed when studying mathematics. When they faced math problems, students often did not have the confidence to solve them. The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in the students’ self-confidence through online learning by using CPA approach during the Covid-19 pandemic, in terms of overall and Initial Mathematical Ability (IMA). This research was a quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design on Mathematics subjects on the topic of data collection and presentation at fifth-grade elementary schools. The sample consisted of 56 students at one of the elementary schools in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. The research instrument was a self-confidence attitude scale given before and after the treatment. The learning process was conducted online through WhatsApp Group, YouTube, and Google Form. The research findings showed that CPA approach increased students' self-confidence better than conventional learning, both as a whole and IMA. Thus, CPA approach could be used as an alternative to increase student self-confidence during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Computational thinking and coding are thinking skills that are recently expected to be acquired by elementary school children as the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 requires students to be familiar with the use of technology. In some developed countries, the two skills have been included in elementary school curriculum. However, the situation is different in the context of Indonesia since teachers or instructors who are able to provide these skills are inadequate. Therefore, this training was intended to socialize and educate the application of coding and computational thinking, especially to elementary school teachers so that they have the ability to equip their students with those skills. The participants of this training were teachers of Labschool UPI Purwakarta. The training was conducted in one day containing the concepts and practices of ICT and computational thinking as well as coding for kids. The result of satisfaction questionnaire distributed to the participants after the training shows a good level of satisfaction in terms of training materials, delivery of materials, and the usefulness of activities as much as 71,4%, 57,1% and 92,9% consecutively. The teachers hope that follow-up trainings are carried out to increase their knowledge and ability in developing technology-based learning.

Abstract

The 21st-century skills are skills that students must master to survive and compete in this 4.0 industrial revolution era. Teachers need to have good professional competence in order to facilitate students to develop 21st-century skills. This also applies to elementary school teachers. Therefore, the teacher needs training that can provide knowledge and skills for teachers to present such learning. The training program participant is an elementary school teacher at the Indonesian School of Johor Bahru Malaysia. The problem identified is that not all SIJB's primary school teachers have diverse educational backgrounds, and the learning presented is not based on 21st-century skills. The participants of this training are 19 teachers. The program is web-based training using the ADDIE model. This training is conducted in three stages, namely the pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation stages. At the implementation stage, there are eight meetings containing materials on 21st Century Skills-based learning in Indonesian Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Civics, English, Arts, ICT, innovative learning models and learning life skills. Participants were given a pretest and posttest understanding of 21st Century learning. The pretest results showed an average value of 60.8, which means that participants' understanding of 21st Century learning is still quite good and the posttest average score of 84.5, which means that understanding participants is good. The result shows that the participants' understanding increased after attending the training. Based on the questionnaire results, the participant's response was quite good, and hoped that the training activities could be carried out on an ongoing basis.
