Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the increase of the Spatial Sense (SS) in the elementary school students through Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach viewed from the Prior Mathematics Ability (PMA). The method was the quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design control. The topic focused on geometry involving as many as 119 5th grade students from 2 elementary schools in Karawang. The sample was taken through the purposive sampling technique. The instrument was through the test to measure SS and PMA as well as the non-test to observe the students. Descriptively, the increase of SS in the students through the CPA approach was higher than those who learned with the conventional one. Based on inferential statistic test, the increase of the Spatial Sense towards the medium and low PMA groups reaches a p-value 0.000 and 0.0010.05. It means that the increase of the Spatial Sense through the CPA approach was better. However, the increase of the Spatial Sense towards the high PMA reaches p-value 0.1020.05, showing that there was no significant difference. Thus, CPA approach is considered a good alternative to increase the students' SS on the high, medium, and low PMA for students in the upper grades.

Abstract

Due to its significance in fostering 21st-century skills, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has rapidly evolved across the country. However, designing effective and meaningful STEM-based lessons is still challenging, especially at the elementary school level. Thus, future elementary teachers should be trained to develop integrated STEM-based lesson plans. This research aims to explore the quality of STEM-based lessons designed by pre-service elementary teachers. This study analyzed six STEM-based lesson plans created by 32 preservice elementary teachers as a final group project in the STEM Learning in Elementary School course. Employing a descriptive analysis method, the study evaluated the lesson plans using STEM Integration Curriculum Assessment (STEM-ICA) indicators to shed light on the lesson design quality. Findings reveal varying scores across STEM-ICA indicators, emphasizing ideal science integration but indicating room for improvement in mathematics integration within the lesson. Assessment alignment and the need for stronger connections in engineering design activities are highlighted. This contributes to discussions on enhancing preparation programs for high-quality STEM educators in elementary schools.

Abstract

Ornamental plant farmers face various challenges due to climate change and environmental stress that significantly affect plant health and growth. This research overcomes these challenges by developing an intelligent watering system that uses internet of things (IoT) technology and decision trees (DTs) algorithms to optimize the use of planting land by ensuring plants grow in the most optimal conditions, both in terms of water and nutrients and increase land productivity. The system is built by integrating various sensors to monitor soil moisture, air humidity, temperature, and light intensity in real-time. The collected data is used to automate watering schedules and provide recommendations on suitable plant species based on the soil nutrient content of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). The use of the DTs algorithm helps in analyzing the data from the sensors and providing recommendations on the most suitable plants for the land. The smart watering system was tested in three zones, each simulating a different watering scenario, and successfully maintained optimal conditions for plant growth in each zone. The machine learning (ML) model with the DTs algorithm can predict the right type of ornamental plants based on the existing land conditions in three watering zones, with an accuracy of 89 %, 90 %, and 91 %, respectively. Furthermore, farmers can follow these recommendations to minimize damage and death of plants so that the level of productivity on the land becomes optimal.

Abstract

The 21st-century skills are skills that students must master to survive and compete in this 4.0 industrial revolution era. Teachers need to have good professional competence in order to facilitate students to develop 21st-century skills. This also applies to elementary school teachers. Therefore, the teacher needs training that can provide knowledge and skills for teachers to present such learning. The training program participant is an elementary school teacher at the Indonesian School of Johor Bahru Malaysia. The problem identified is that not all SIJB's primary school teachers have diverse educational backgrounds, and the learning presented is not based on 21st-century skills. The participants of this training are 19 teachers. The program is web-based training using the ADDIE model. This training is conducted in three stages, namely the pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation stages. At the implementation stage, there are eight meetings containing materials on 21st Century Skills-based learning in Indonesian Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Civics, English, Arts, ICT, innovative learning models and learning life skills. Participants were given a pretest and posttest understanding of 21st Century learning. The pretest results showed an average value of 60.8, which means that participants' understanding of 21st Century learning is still quite good and the posttest average score of 84.5, which means that understanding participants is good. The result shows that the participants' understanding increased after attending the training. Based on the questionnaire results, the participant's response was quite good, and hoped that the training activities could be carried out on an ongoing basis. Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of spatial sense skills possessed by elementary school students. The research aims to develop an instrument of spatial sense ability suitable for elementary school students. The indicators developed in the preparation of questions include: 1) classifying real objects into 3D form (building space); 2) investigating, exploring, and describing geometry in nature and the real world; 3) exploring the directional relationship of objects in space; 4) analyzing the nature of 3D shapes and interpreting 3D shapes into 2D forms. Research and Development was chosen as the method of this research. A total of 33 grade VI students of SDN 1 Nagri Kidul, Purwakarta Regency, West Java Province, were the samples in this study. The sample was selected by purposive sampling. The instrument used is an essay test consisting of seven questions regarding the geometry of cubes and blocks. The expert (Professor in the field of mathematics education) validated the seven questions that had been prepared. Expert considerations are used as the basis for the improvement of the compiled questions. Then the questions that have been corrected are tested on the research sample. The results of the trial were calculated for validity, reliability, difficulty index, and discriminatory power. Of the seven questions compiled, six were declared valid, reliable, and had high discriminatory power, and the level of difficulty of the questions consisted of medium and difficult. Thus, 6 of the seven items developed can be used by teachers or researchers as an instrument to measure the spatial sense abilities of elementary school students, primarily fifth-grade students.
