Abstract

Alue Naga Beach in Banda Aceh is a coastal area with significant ecological and economic value, but it faces serious threats due to plastic and microplastic pollution. In response to this issue, a beach cleanup initiative was carried out by students from the Development Economics Department of Syiah Kuala University and the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Department of Abulyatama University as part of their community service efforts. The activity was conducted through a hands-on approach on-site, beginning with a site survey, mapping of waste accumulation points, followed by cleanup and documentation of the activity. The results of the activity showed that a total of eight bags of plastic and inorganic waste were successfully collected. Most of the waste consisted of single-use plastic, which has the potential to become a source of microplastics in the ocean. Despite limitations in implementation, the activity successfully contributed positively to beach cleanliness. It is recommended that similar activities be conducted regularly, involving the community, strengthening government support, and incorporating education.

Abstract

Wax precipitation in crude oils can produce problems in oil production and transportation operations. Prediction is the key of avoidance or remediation of the wax problem of flow assurance. Among the wax prediction thermodynamic model, Coutinho model can be run using limited laboratory data, but the result is comparably accurate. The model requires n-paraffin distribution, which commonly determined by high-temperature gas chromatography (HTGC) analysis. However, only few laboratories could perform the HTGC. Lemigas has abundant database of crude oil with conventional gas chromatography data. An extended n-paraffin distribution was calculated based on the conventional GC data by performing extrapolation and normalization to total wax content. The n-paraffin distribution was applied in Coutinho model to predict wax precipitation of a crude oil sample. The WAT obtained from the model deviated only 2°C from DSC data. The result was also valid to DSC data in term of precipitated wax amount along temperature range.

Abstract

Many of the oil and gas installations in the Indonesian Sea are reaching the end of their economic production life. Typically, oil and gas fields have an economic life of 20 to 40 years and a decommissioning program will be required and predicted to peak during the period 2010-2020. Some of them are located in shallow water such as those around Pulau Seribu, Java Sea, and South China Sea; some others are in deeper water such those at Makasar Straits and Moluccas Sea. Many different opinions exist on the benefits and problems of a partial platform removal or a complete removal. For some reasons platforms would be a good fishing spot. On the other hands, an unseen hazard could be left behind by the platforms. Even a complete removal of the platforms is conducted but without proper clearing of the ocean floor, the unused platforms still can cause hazards. For the management of the seas outside the territorial waters, worldwide nations have historically entered into international agreements and conventions. These agreements and conventions that have been entered into under the umbrella of the United Nations are Geneva Convention, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Guidelines. Nationally, there is little information concerning with the decommissioning project. This paper is intended to highlight options for decommissioning of offshore platforms, its environmental impacts, and regulations that could be referred to following the decommissioning proposal. The technological aspects of the structural decommissioning of platforms are beyond the scope of this paper.

Abstract

Oxidation of CO has been studied on Pt/y-alumina catalyst. The catalyst was produced by impregnating y-alumina with hexachloroplantic acid solution, calcined, oxidized and reduced at the optimum condition. Catalyst was characterized by nitrogen sorption measurement and scanning electron microscope (SEM). By optimization of calcination, oxidation and reduction on the catalyst preparation, a residual serface area of 129.14 m²/gram was obtained. The resulting catalyst has a high activity for the conversion of CO to CO₂.

Abstract

This study explores the potential of bioactive peptides derived from hydrolyzed goat milk casein as α-amylase inhibitors, with implications for diabetes management. Goat milk casein was hydrolyzed using trypsin at varying enzyme-to-protein ratios to achieve different degrees of hydrolysis (DH). The optimal enzyme-to-protein ratio of 1:40 yielded the highest DH (31.31%). The resulting hydrolyzates were fractionated using strong cationic exchange solid-phase extraction (SCX-SPE), and their α-amylase inhibitory activity was evaluated. The fraction collected at pH 5 exhibited the highest α-amylase inhibition, with an inhibition value of 76.88% and an IC50 of 221.69 μg/mL. This fraction also contained the highest total peptide mass (1,208.9 μg). The enzyme kinetic study demonstrates an uncompetitive inhibition by fraction 5. Molecular docking simulations revealed that peptides from the most active fractions, including EGIEELLTGTIR, SSPSKHQPPPIR, and LLPRKAK, interact with key residues in the active site of α-amylase. The docking results demonstrated favorable binding energies and stable interactions with critical binding pockets, indicating the peptides strong potential as α-amylase inhibitors. Furthermore, the docking analysis revealed that these peptides interact with both the active site and other regions outside the active site, indicating an uncompetitive inhibition mechanism.

Abstract

Avocado seeds have potential as an alternative source of starch; however, the color and quality of the starch are often affected by the extraction process. This study aims to investigate the effect of various concentrations of sodium metabisulfite on the yield, moisture content, ash content, as well as the preference and descriptive evaluation of the color of avocado seed starches. The research conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with non-factorial treatment levels of sodium metabisulfite concentrations at 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, and 0.2%, each repeated five times. The results established that sodium metabisulfite concentrations have not significantly affected starch yield or color preferences, but it had a significant effect on moisture content, ash content, and color descriptions of the starch. Increasing concentrations of sodium metabisulfite consistently increased moisture and ash contents while reducing browning intensity, as indicated by a decrease in color scores from light-dark brown at 0.05% concentration to light cream at 0.20%. In conclusion, sodium metabisulfite plays a role in modifying the moisture and ash content as well as the color of avocado seed starch without significantly altering the extraction yield and color preferences
