Abstract

Qualitative research has methodological and epistemological characteristics that fundamentally distinguish it from quantitative approaches, particularly in understanding complex, dynamic, and meaningful social realities. This article aims to comprehensively analyze the paradigm and philosophical foundations underlying qualitative research, with an emphasis on its ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions. The research employs a literature review method by examining various scientific sources, including research methodology textbooks, national and international journals, and works related to the philosophy of science. The analysis technique used is content analysis to identify and synthesize key concepts related to the qualitative research paradigm. The results show that qualitative research is rooted in interpretive and constructivist paradigms, which view reality as plural, subjective, and constructed through social interactions and human experiences. From an epistemological perspective, knowledge is understood as the result of an interactive relationship between the researcher and the research subject, positioning the researcher as the primary instrument in the research process. Meanwhile, from an axiological perspective, qualitative research acknowledges the role of values, ethics, and the reflexivity of the researcher throughout the research process. This study is expected to strengthen the conceptual and philosophical understanding of researchers in designing and conducting qualitative research in a scientific, reflective, and responsible manner.

Abstract

This conceptual article examines the fundamental concepts of research subjects, population, and sampling, and their significance for the development of Islamic Education (PAI). These methodological components are often misunderstood, resulting in inaccurate research design, biased data, and weak generalization in educational studies. Through a critical analysis of classical and contemporary methodological literature, this article clarifies the nature of research subjects, the types and functions of populations, and the various sampling techniques that influence the scientific validity of academic work. The discussion demonstrates that the accurate determination of subjects, population, and samples is not merely technical but serves as an epistemological foundation that shapes the quality of interpretation and reliability of scholarly findings. In the context of Islamic Education, these methodological elements have strategic importance, especially in addressing contemporary challenges such as digital learning, data security, media ethics, and the promotion of religious moderation in the Society 5.0 era. This article emphasizes that strong methodological literacy enables researchers to produce academic work that is more representative, adaptive, and relevant to the theoretical and practical advancement of Islamic education.

Abstract

Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) has become an essential 21st-century competence that needs to be integrated into mathematics education to enhance students’ problem-solving and analytical skills. However, conventional mathematics instruction often fails to systematically develop decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in developing students’ computational thinking in mathematics. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group was employed involving two junior secondary school classes. The experimental group received mathematics instruction through Project-Based Learning, while the control group experienced conventional teaching. Data were collected using a computational thinking test, a conceptual understanding test, and a student engagement questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired and independent samples t-tests, and effect size calculations. The results indicate that students in the PjBL group achieved significantly higher improvements in computational thinking skills compared to the control group, with large effect sizes observed particularly in decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction. Algorithmic thinking also improved with structured scaffolding. The study concludes that Project-Based Learning provides an effective instructional framework for fostering computational thinking and enhancing conceptual understanding in mathematics education.

Abstract

Transforming STEM education through Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has emerged as a central strategy for strengthening university students’ computational thinking (CT) skills in response to the challenges of the digital age and Industry 4.0. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of how PBL supports CT development within Indonesian higher education, particularly in relation to the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka curriculum reforms. However, it remains unclear how PBL can be effectively implemented within STEM education to systematically optimize the development of students’ computational thinking. The core problem addressed in this study concerns the absence of a coherent pedagogical framework that integrates PBL-STEM to comprehensively foster key CT components. Accordingly, this study examines the extent to which the application of PBL strengthens university students’ computational thinking within the context of the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka curriculum. Using a systematic literature review approach, the study synthesizes 35 peer-reviewed publications indexed in SINTA and Scopus from 2017 to 2024, along with relevant national and international education policy documents. The findings indicate that PBL effectively enhances the five core components of CT, namely problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, algorithmic design, and iterative evaluation. PBL also promotes students’ creativity, collaboration, and reflective reasoning in addressing real-world, technology-driven problems across STEM disciplines. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including lecturer readiness, disparities in digital infrastructure, and the limited availability of standardized CT assessment frameworks. The study underscores the importance of strengthening pedagogical capacity, improving digital learning ecosystems, and adopting process-oriented assessment models to ensure sustainable PBL-STEM implementation in higher education.
