Abstract

Purpose of the study: This research aims to analyze the needs for developing an Ethno-STEM-integrated Problem-Based Learning (PBL) e-module to enhance the creative thinking skills of 8th-grade junior high school students on the topics of vibrations, waves, and sound. Methodology: This study employed a mixed method. The instrument used was a questionnaire adapted from previous research. The sample consisted of junior high school science teachers and students in Karanganyar Regency. Data analysis used descriptive statistics. Main Findings: The findings revealed a significant gap between current science learning practices and the demands of 21st-century education. Teachers reported difficulties in explaining abstract concepts such as vibrations, waves, and sound using conventional methods, compounded by the limited availability of instructional media that integrates local cultural wisdom. Meanwhile, students expressed strong interest in digital and contextual learning resources, yet their creative thinking skills remained low, with an average score of only 49.4%. This indicates the urgent need for innovative, interactive, and culturally relevant learning solutions. Novelty/Originality of this Study: The development of an Ethno-STEM-based PBL e-module that not only integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with local wisdom but also explicitly targets the four core aspects of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Unlike conventional modules, this approach leverages ethnoscience contexts to make abstract concepts more tangible while simultaneously fostering problem-solving and higher-order thinking. Thus, the research provides a strategic foundation for designing learning media that is pedagogically sound, culturally meaningful, and aligned with the competencies required in the global era.

Abstract

The management of organic waste using an anaerobic reactor offers the potential for renewable energy production and nutrient recovery. This study evaluates the performance of a 3,000 L fiberglass anaerobic reactor designed to treat a mixture of kitchen waste, cow manure, and water in a 1:1:1 ratio. The process was conducted under mesophilic conditions (30–38 °C) over a 40-day batch cycle. The reactor produced a total of 63.75 m³ of biogas with an average methane content of 59.3%, equivalent to 0.193 m³ CH₄/kg VS. Additionally, the system produces approximately 2,700 kg/month of liquid effluent and 900 kg/month of stabilized solids. These results demonstrate the efficiency of substrate bioconversion and the potential for utilizing residues as organic fertilizer. This study emphasizes the technical feasibility of using a community-scale fiberglass reactor for organic waste treatment with measurable performance parameters.

Abstract

Chemical literacy has a role in helping students understand local and global issues such as the energy crisis, environment, and health. Teachers need an adequate understanding of chemical literacy to plan appropriate learning and design adequate assessment instruments. This study aims to analyze the description of chemical literacy skills in chemistry teachers at Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School). This research is a quantitative descriptive method that describes the understanding of chemical literacy. A total of 85 teachers from 12 Madrasah Aliyah in Central Java, Indonesia were respondents. The research data were obtained by questionnaire with a total of 24 statements about the components of chemical literacy. Questionnaire analysis carried out to see the relationship between teacher understanding in assessing chemical literacy, obtained by using RASCH analysis. The results showed that the reliability of the questionnaire was 0.98. Cronbach's Alpha (α) which measures the interaction between respondents and items has a value of 0.96. This value indicates the instrument used is in perfect condition and effective with a high level of reliability so that it can use in actual research. The results showed that the teachers had not fully understood the domains and aspects of chemical literacy skills. The Wright map shows only 30% of respondents (teachers) understand the aspects of chemical literacy and apply them in chemistry learning. The results of this study suggest that policymakers such as the government and educational institutions, hold more in-house training and workshops on chemical literacy for teachers.
