Abstract

This study was motivated by students'students' low chemical literacy skills and critical thinking skills. One way to overcome this problem is to actively use a learning model involving students, such as problem-based learning (PBL). This research aims to analyze the effect of PBL on students' chemical literacy and critical thinking skills. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method. The research design used was a non-equivalent control group design. The sample selection technique used was cluster random sampling, which was done by selecting 70 second-grade high school students. Data collection using tests with instruments in the form of essay test sheets regarding posttest chemical literacy skills with as many as seven questions and posttest critical thinking skills with as many as five questions. Data analysis techniques using non-parametric statistical tests. Hypothesis testing using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed a significant difference between students taught with the PBL model and students who were not trained with the model. Applying the PBL model is proven to affect students' chemical literacy and critical thinking skills. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of PBL can significantly improve students' chemical literacy and essential thinking skills compared to learning methods that do not use the model. This study implies that problem-based learning models can influence students' chemical literacy and critical thinking skills with implementation tailored to the context and material in this study, namely reaction rates.

Abstract

This study aims to explore inquiry-based experiments' educational aspects, levels of inquiry, and contributions to sustainability literacy. In this study, a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis were used. A systematic literature review in this study used a PRISMA flow diagram, and the bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOS Viewer. Using systematic literature review 79 articles were analyzed, focusing on three main aspects: pedagogy/education, levels of inquiry, and sustainability literacy. A bibliometric analysis was also used in this study.  A RIS format of articles was compiled and then used for the bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer. The bibliometric analysis focused on network overlay, density visualization, and author and co-author relationships. The results of this study indicate that inquiry-based experiments significantly enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts, motivation, and essential scientific skills such as hypothesis formulation, experiment design, data collection, and analysis. This literature review also reveals a gap in integrating sustainability literacy into inquiry-based experiments. Although some studies have incorporated green chemistry principles and real-world applications, only a few explicitly promote sustainability literacy. This underscores an opportunity for future research to design inquiry-based experiments that more directly address sustainability literacy.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This research aims to analyze the needs for developing an Ethno-STEM-integrated Problem-Based Learning (PBL) e-module to enhance the creative thinking skills of 8th-grade junior high school students on the topics of vibrations, waves, and sound. Methodology: This study employed a mixed method. The instrument used was a questionnaire adapted from previous research. The sample consisted of junior high school science teachers and students in Karanganyar Regency. Data analysis used descriptive statistics. Main Findings: The findings revealed a significant gap between current science learning practices and the demands of 21st-century education. Teachers reported difficulties in explaining abstract concepts such as vibrations, waves, and sound using conventional methods, compounded by the limited availability of instructional media that integrates local cultural wisdom. Meanwhile, students expressed strong interest in digital and contextual learning resources, yet their creative thinking skills remained low, with an average score of only 49.4%. This indicates the urgent need for innovative, interactive, and culturally relevant learning solutions. Novelty/Originality of this Study: The development of an Ethno-STEM-based PBL e-module that not only integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with local wisdom but also explicitly targets the four core aspects of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Unlike conventional modules, this approach leverages ethnoscience contexts to make abstract concepts more tangible while simultaneously fostering problem-solving and higher-order thinking. Thus, the research provides a strategic foundation for designing learning media that is pedagogically sound, culturally meaningful, and aligned with the competencies required in the global era.
