Abstract

This research study aimed to present the investigation of utilizing YouTube as learning media for students to access speaking videos and posting those speaking videos on social media in promoting students’ speaking skill in virtual instruction. A mixed-method of qualitative and quantitative approaches is applied in this study. In collecting the data, three instruments were used, namely observation, interview and documents of students’ speaking test results. The class observation revealed that the students learned more in understanding how to perform speaking better from the speaking videos they had watched from YouTube. The average score the students gained from their videos uploading on Instagram after the course (4.12) was higher than that in the pre-test (2.40). These scores were assessed based on speaking scoring rubric of Brown’s (2001). From the uploaded videos observation (watching) of the students, it could be seen that their speaking performance improved from their initial videos to the second ones in which they were more confident, accurate, fluent and comprehensive. From the interview to the lecturer, it was understood that the students enjoyed watching the videos and they became more motivated to learn and practice their speaking skill. Besides, in order to post their best speaking videos, they put their best efforts to perform well since they realized that their videos would be watched by myriad numbers of people. Therefore, this research work confirmed that utilizing YouTube as media and posting videos on social media as activities applied in virtual speaking class promoted students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

Study on the linguistic content of marketing promotion has received a small concern among tourism academicians. This subject, however, contributes a severe impact on customers' decisions, whether or not they approve a purchase or rejection. This paper thoroughly shines a light on the issue of linguistic use in the context of touristic marketing of Gililife magazine in the two published editions. Subsequently, discourse analysis was employed as a method of analysis under the qualitative approach. The data was carefully analyzed in four steps: collecting data, reducing data, displaying data, and drawing a conclusion. The information was collected from selecting four discourses discussing destinations with five main tourism components (attraction, amenity, accessibility, ancillary service, security) as the basis for content analysis. The findings show that the discourses predominantly emphasize attractions and amenities. However, security is being neglected in every lesson, even though it places a robust reason for visits.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly reshaped the world of education, particularly in how university students access and interact with learning resources. Among the various AI tools, ChatGPT stands out for its capability to engage advanced, human-like conversations, offering students a novel way to obtain information and interact with academic content. This study aims to investigate university students' perspectives on using ChatGPT compared to traditional textbooks as learning resources. Employing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 students from Indonesia and Malaysia, allowing for a comparative analysis of their experiences. The findings reveal a significant paradigm shift in learning behaviours, with ChatGPT emerging as the preferred initial resource, even among students who recognize the importance of textbooks. This research highlights the transformative potential of AI in education and emphasizes the necessity for educators to adapt their teaching practices to effectively support student learning in an increasingly AI-driven environment.
