Abstract

Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) is not only focused on mastering linguistic aspects but also on understanding culture as the context for language use. This study aims to examine multimodal integration in BIPA learning based on the local wisdom of Tuban Gedog Batik to strengthen learners’ language skills. This study employs a literature review method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from scientific journal articles accessed via Google Scholar and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that Tuban Gedog Batik possesses strong potential as an authentic learning resource due to its rich historical, philosophical, and socio-cultural values. Furthermore, the characteristics of Tuban Gedog Batik allow for the development of learning materials in various modes of representation, such as text, visual, audio, and audiovisual, in accordance with the principles of multimodal learning. Integrating Tuban Gedog Batik into BIPA instruction has the potential to enhance learners’ language proficiency while simultaneously strengthening their intercultural competence. The uniqueness of this study lies in the integration of a multimodal approach, audiovisual media, and the local wisdom of Tuban Gedog Batik into a single conceptual model for BIPA instruction. Furthermore, it is suitable for intermediate to advanced BIPA learners (levels 4–6) as it supports the development of reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in a contextual manner. Thus, this study contributes to the development of culture-based and multimodal BIPA learning as an effort to support the internationalization of the Indonesian language.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ethics of cross-cultural bargaining between Indonesia and China and its implications in learning Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature study design. The data consist of relevant scholarly articles on bargaining practices, pragmatics, and cross-cultural communication. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the practice of bargaining in Indonesian culture emphasizes politeness of language, indirect communication, and social harmony, while Chinese culture is influenced by the values of collectivism, the concept of guanxi, and face oriented towards social relations and reputation. These differences show that there are variations in communication strategies that are influenced by the cultural values behind them. This research emphasizes the importance of integrating pragmatic aspects and cross-cultural communication in the development of BIPA learning materials based on authentic communication.

Abstract

The study of research into death in Javanese literature is important because this theme does not merely represent the end of life. Death also fosters human spiritual, moral and cultural reflection. However, previous studies have tended to focus on religious and formal aesthetic aspects. The integration of religious thanatological, Sufi and Javanese cosmological perspectives in modern Javanese poetry has not yet been extensively examined. This study aims to uncover the symbolism of death in the poetry anthology Wirid Wulangruh by Nyitno Munajat. The research employs a descriptive-interpretative qualitative approach grounded in Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. The research data consists of two poems on the theme of death, titled “Episode Barzah” and “Yasa Astana Pralaya”. These poems were analysed through the stages of distancing, interpretation, appropriation, and reference. The results of the study indicate that death is constructed as a constructor of meaning, a transitional boundary, transcendent continuity, and an eschatological reality. The symbols of death represent the deconstruction of worldly identity, a spiritual journey towards eternity, and human moral accountability before God. This study reinforces the notion that Javanese Sufi literature functions as a medium for philosophical and spiritual reflection on the nature of human existence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of social stratification in the short story Juru Masak by Damhuri Muhammad using Max Weber’s perspective, which includes class, status, and power dimensions. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. The data source is the text of the short story, while the data are in the form of narrative and dialogue units that reflect social stratification indicators. Data were collected through a reading and note-taking technique and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that: (1) social class is constructed through occupation and economic ownership, where economic capital determines an individual’s position in the social hierarchy; (2) social status operates through symbolic recognition and social honor, functioning as a mechanism of social closure that restricts social relations, particularly in marriage; and (3) social power is represented not only through economic domination but also through cultural authority based on collective recognition. The findings indicate that social stratification in the story is multidimensional and dynamic, revealing tensions between economic mobility and the persistence of symbolic status structures.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of hybridity in the Kokoro by Natsume Souseki using Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial theory. The research employs a qualitative method with an interpretative approach, supported by Gadamer’s hermeneutic analysis to explore meanings within the text. The data consist of narrative and dialogue excerpts that reflect the dynamics of identity, which are analyzed based on three indicators of hybridity: partial presence, ambivalence of identity, and in-between space. The findings reveal that the characters experience identity struggles due to the encounter between traditional Japanese values and Western modernity during the Meiji era. These forms of hybridity demonstrate that the characters’ identities are unstable, fragmented, and continuously negotiated. In conclusion, the novel represents identity as a dynamic construction shaped through cultural interaction. This study highlights the significance of hybridity theory in translation studies and postcolonial literary analysis, and it suggests further research comparing the original and translated texts to deepen the understanding of identity transformation across cultural contexts.

Abstract

Literary works, as representations of social reality, often portray dynamics of power relations, domination, and resistance within society. The novel Naomi by Tanizaki Junichiro is one such work that illustrates authority conflict in social relationships between characters, particularly between Joji and Naomi. This study aims to describe the forms of domination and resistance in their relationship and to explain the resulting shifts in the structure of power. This research employs a qualitative method using Ralf Dahrendorf’s theory of authority conflict as its analytical framework. The data source is the Indonesian translated version of the novel Naomi, collected through library research and a close reading-note-taking technique. The data are analyzed systematically through identification, classification, mapping, and interpretation based on the concepts of domination, subordination, resistance, and structural change. The findings reveal that initially Joji occupies a dominant position as the authority holder, while Naomi is in a subordinate position. However, as the story progresses, Naomi demonstrates various forms of resistance that eventually lead to a shift in the power structure. Ultimately, Naomi becomes the more dominant figure in the relationship. This study concludes that authority conflict not only generates tension but also drives structural changes in social relations.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of alienation and traumatic memories in Herwin Novianto's film Rumah untuk Alie (2025), utilizing approaches from literary psychology, Erich Fromm's theory of alienation, Cathy Caruth's theory of trauma, and Roland Barthes's film semiotics. The analysis was conducted not only to map the psychological dynamics of the main character but also to identify the relevance of these findings for Indonesian Language and Literature learning. The film demonstrates how family trauma and experiences of alienation shape the character's behavior, communication patterns, and emotional development—all of which are important aspects in character education, film appreciation learning, and strengthening students' emotional literacy. The results show that Alie's alienation is visualized through a cold domestic space, visual compositions that separate the characters, and minimal emotional contact. Meanwhile, traumatic memories are evoked through the use of non-linear flashbacks, repetitive sounds, and symbols such as cracks in family photographs. These findings have significant implications for Indonesian Language and Literature education, particularly in developing film-based learning, implementing trauma-sensitive pedagogy, and strengthening student empathy through character analysis and sociocultural context.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of trauma and relational healing between humans and dragons in How to Train Your Dragon (2025) and its relevance to Indonesian language and literature education. The study aims to identify forms of trauma, explain the process of relational recovery, and explore the pedagogical potential of the film as a learning resource. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the analysis applies content analysis based on trauma theory proposed by Caruth (1996) and LaCapra (2001), as well as Haraway’s posthumanist perspective (2008). The findings indicate that the live-action version presents trauma more concretely than the animated version through the visualization of physical injuries, expressions of fear, and relational distance between humans and dragons. Trauma is represented not only as an individual psychological experience but also as a collective and ecological phenomenon reflected in symbolic violence toward dragons and cultural pressure on humans. The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless illustrates a process of working through characterized by empathy, trust, and cross-species ecological reconciliation. These findings suggest that the film can be utilized as a multimodal text in Indonesian language and literature education to develop emotional literacy, ecological literacy, and literary appreciation skills.
