Abstract

"Taqwa" is a familiar term among Muslims, serving as a reminder to continuously enhance one's piety. It has also been incorporated into the national education goals in Indonesia, extending its implementation to the field of education and industry. This study aims to develop and measure the concept of taqwa. Employing a quantitative method and purposive sampling techniques, data collection utilized the Muslim Piety Scale (MPS), developed by the researcher based on Kuning's (2018) taqwa concept. The study involved 227 Muslim students from the Faculty of Psychology at the Islamic University of Riau (UIR). Data analysis was conducted using Smart PLS 3.0 software. Findings revealed that the taqwa construct's four dimensions had items reflecting each component of taqwa. The dimension of controlling anger made the most dominant contribution to the taqwa construct, followed by forgiveness, seeking forgiveness (istighfar), and generosity. The developed taqwa scale from this study can serve as a tool for measuring piety in educational and industrial settings, specifically for individuals of the Islamic faith.

Abstract

A retaining wall functions to resist soil mass and prevent landslides caused by rainfall, soil weight, or other external loads. Currently, retaining wall structures are widely applied in civil engineering projects, although their use has been known since ancient times. This study examines safety factors including soil bearing capacity, shear force, and stability against overturning. The objective is to analyze the causes of retaining wall failure and to design the reconstruction of the collapsed section. The analysis results indicate that the existing retaining wall is not stable against shear, with a value of 1.28 < 1.5. Therefore, a redesign was carried out using a gravity retaining wall with a vertical back face, which is suitable for high walls. From this design, shear stability of 1.67 > 1.5 and overturning stability of 3.9 > 1.5 were obtained, thus declared safe.

Abstract

Sediment flows in volcanic landscapes are sensitive to land uses. Settlements of land use are often found along the slopes of volcanoes in Indonesia. Many detailed studies of sediment discharge in agroforestry and dryland in volcanic slopes have been carried out. Meanwhile, the settlement's land use is not of interest to researchers. This study aims to build a model of sediment discharge in settlement areas of volcanic landscapes with a focus on (1) the relationship between sediment discharge and water flow discharge; and (2) the sediment rate and soil loss in settlement land use. The study used the key area method in watershed areas that have settlements land use. The research was carried out using field surveys to observe soil, slope morphology, and the settlement's land cover characteristics. Sediment flow was measured in the suspended sediment data and bedload sediment. Water flow data was measured in the canal water level and the rain data was measured with an automatic water level recorder and the Automatic Rain Recorder, as well as field observations of the characteristics of the flows entering the canal system. Data analysis was carried out to produce a model of sediment discharge, and the rate of soil loss. The research resulted in a suspension discharge Qs=0.4396Q1.2123 and a soil loss rate of 5.04 tons/year.AbstrakAliran sedimen bentanglahan gunungapi sensitif terhadap bentuk-bentuk penggunaan lahannya. Abstract

This study reimagines classroom literacy practices in Indonesian multilingual contexts by examining how translanguaging, dynamic alternation between languages to build meaning, can function as a pedagogical strategy that bridges the gap between students’ home literacies and the monolingual practices of formal schooling. Employing a qualitative multiple case study with light classroom ethnography, the research was conducted in five secondary schools in Garut, West Java. Data were collected through classroom observations involving reading, text discussions, and writing activities; semi-structured interviews with teachers and students; and analysis of instructional documents. Discourse analysis was used to identify the forms and functions of translanguaging in classroom interaction, while thematic analysis explored participants’ perceptions and experiences. The findings reveal that translanguaging naturally emerges in various classroom interactions, particularly during group discussions and concept explanations, enhancing students’ conceptual understanding, encouraging active participation, and bridging home–school literacy practices. Teachers and students flexibly used Sundanese, Indonesian, and English to construct more inclusive meanings, yet curricular policies that emphasize formal Indonesian remain a key constraint. This study offers new empirical evidence of translanguaging in Indonesian secondary literacy classrooms and proposes a conceptual model grounded in local practices, contributing to educational, linguistic, and applied language studies by highlighting the need for pedagogies that are linguistically responsive and socially contextualized.

Abstract

Smoking is one of preventable non-communicable diseases (NCDs) risk factors. Indonesia as the third largest number of smokers country in the world have the percentage of smokers (aged 15+ years) around 32% in 2018. The Padang Panjang City Government have commitment to solve the problem by issued a Regional Regulation regarding Smoke-Free Areas and Cigarette Order Areas No. 8 of 2009. The Padang Panjang City Government also provided ‘totok rokok’ service that available in all public health centers. This program help the smokers to improve their intention to quit smoking until succeed, but many patients also have failed or drop out. We conducted qualitative study with in-depth interview in five public health centers in Padang Panjang City. Participants in this study consist of patients of Totok Rokok Program in public health centers. Data were analyzed by triangulation. There were several factors that influence a smoker to quit smoking. The belief of patient’s susceptibility to have severe disease due to smoking, the belief that smoking can cause comorbidities which will eventually end in death, self-awareness that quit smoking can affect his health and his family as well as his own economy, and lack of motivation for quit smoking. The obstacles in achieving the goal of smokers to stop smoking such as self-inconsistent factors in undergoing therapy and environmental factors such as smoker friends that make patients failed after program.  Self factors that indicates a lack of self-motivation in decision to quit smoking, also smoker friends contributing in inconsistency of totok rokok program’s outcome. It is necessary to strengthening monitoring during and after totok rokok program in order to maintain patient’s motivation and control the smoking temptation from theirself and other smoker friends. Keywords : Totok Rokok ; Smoking; Cessation; Program

Abstract

This study aims to explore the phenomenon of gratitude in private university students who study while working. The qualitative approach used in this study is a phenomenological model. Participants consisted of 4 students studying while working part time and odd jobs. These students expressed their motivation to study while working because of economic demands, looking for experience, to fill their free time and ease the burden on their parents in tuition fees. Participants in this study experienced various obstacles in carrying out activities between college and work so that the coping responses or lifestyle carried out by college students while working were: a) choosing a priority scale, b) dividing study and work time, c) communicating effectively, d ) build friendships, e) maintain health and f) have feelings of shame if they are not able to meet the standards that have been set. Studying while working turns out to lead to positive emotions of gratitude which is a source of strength for them, which can be explained as a result of this study as follows: a) accepting gifts (students get dispensation from the workplace, lecturers, and fellow students), b) realizing the value of gifts (students feel proud because they are more economically independent and ashamed to trouble their parents, c) respect the intention of the giver (trying to finish college and trying to get a bachelor's degree on time as a form of gratitude to Allah for all the life experiences lived and appreciating the gifts of the people around him both materially and immaterial). In addition, these students can feel the benefits of gratitude, including avoiding feelings of envy, hate, anger or greed and feeling happiness through this gratitude experience.
