Abstract

This study aimed to describe and compare the students’ fluency, flexibility, and originality in solving non-routine problems in the Palembang context. They were depicted from the student’s fluency, flexibility, and originality of solving the horizontal and vertical mathematization forms. This qualitative study employed. The subjects of this study were 30 students of grade nine of junior high schools in Palembang. The instruments used were tests and interviews. The tests were employed to investigate the written horizontal and vertical mathematizations forms. Meanwhile, the interviews were to explore the students’ ideas with inadequately detailed answers. Then, the test and interview data were reduced and grouped based on the indicators of creativity. The reduced data were presented in a descriptive form for conclusions. The results of the data analysis showed that the high-ability students were the most fluent and flexible in solving the problems. Still, the provided solutions were less original and tended to use formal mathematics in the forms of formulas, symbols, and operations. Meanwhile, the moderate-ability students tended to start to solve problems by simplifying them, then presenting them in visual images. The answer sheets of the moderate-ability students revealed their fluency in understanding the problems and solutions, flexibility, and originality of thinking. This study obtained different results from the low-ability students who tended to have difficulties understanding the problems and made many errors in solving them.  Such a condition showed their inability to write the known data and relate the data to other facts they had already learned. As a result, their answers did not represent fluency, flexibility, and originality.

Abstract

This study aimed to produce learning trajectory with rowing context that can help students understand addition and subtraction of fractions. Subject of the research were students IV MIN 2 Palembang. The method used was research design with three stages, those are preparing for the experiment, the design experiments, and the retrospective analysis. Learning trajectory was designed from in-formal stage to the formal stage. At the informal stage, Rowing was used as a starting point to explore the students’ knowledge of fractions. Data collection conducted through video recordings and photos to see the learning process in the classroom, written tests, observation and interviews during the learning process with the students which is the subject of research. Research produced learning trajectory consisting of a series of learning addition and subtraction of fractions dealing with the rowing. The results showed that the use of the rowing can be a bridge of students' thinking and help students in understanding the operation of addition and subtraction of fractions.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.22342/jme.9.1.4270.69-80

Abstract

Several researches showed that students had difficulty in understanding the concept of Least Common Multiple (LCM) in Elementary School. This underlies the researcher to design a learning of LCM  using storytelling,  Legend Putri Dayang Merindu  (LPDM), which contains situational problem related to LCM. The purposes of this study are  to know  the role  of  LPDM in supporting students'  ability to understand LCM concept and  to generate a student  learning  trajectory in  learning of LCM  using LPDM.  This research  uses methodology of design research consists of three steps (i.e.  preliminary design, teaching experiment  and  retrospective analysis),  and the learning approach of realistic mathematics education, labeled by  PMRI  in Indonesia. From the research result conducted in MIN 1 Palembang can be concluded that the learning of LCM using LPDM has role in supporting students' ability to understand LCM concept. Therefore, student learning trajectory to understanding LCM concept is started from solving of situational problems based on LPDM until formal solution of LCM. In this case, there are three stages that students through (i.e. understanding concept of multiple, common multiple and LCM) using various strategies in the level situational, model of, model for and formal.

Abstract

Rotation (rotation) is one of the materials in the transformation of geometry. Rotational learning can be the basis for student understanding geometrically because of its dynamic nature. Rotational learning can allow students to relate some geometric concepts such as congruence and equivalence. The study aims to explore the students’ inductive reasoning in rotation problem through the context of songket Palembang pattern in class IX. This research is related to the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Approach (PMRI) as a learning approach used. The methodology used in this study is Design Research type validation studies consisting of three stages: preliminary design, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. The study was conducted for IX grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. The learning path (Hypothetical Learning Trajectory) in design research plays an important role as a research design and instrument. The Hypothetical Learning Trajectory was developed together with a series of activities using the contet of songket Palembang pattern such as pucuk rebung pattern, lepus pattern, lintang pattern, etc. Data collected in the form of video recordings and photos during the learning process, student interviews, student work results, discussion results, and field notes at each meeting. The instruments used include documentation in the form of video recordings and photos, interview sheets, student activity sheets, field note sheets, and the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). Media used in this study was the students’ worksheet. The result of this study indicated that exploration using the context of songket Palembang patterns can help inductive reasoning ability on students when solving rotation problem. The conclusion of this study is the use of songket Palembang pattern as starting point in mathematics learning in rotation material helps the students to explore their inductive reasoning skill in solving rotation problems.

Abstract

The research is purposed to generate a  learning trajectory that supports students to understand the concepts of exponential through the context vegetative propagation in animals. The Design Research was chosen as the exact method to achive the objective. Hypotetical learning trajectory in the design research played an important role as the design and research instrument. Hypotetical learning trajectory was designed as the preliminary design and was examined to 50 students from the ninth graders of YPI Tunas Bangsa Junior high school.  (e.g 6 students from pilot experiment and 44 students from teaching experiment). The result of the learning experiment showed that drawing activity of the process of animal vegetative propagation could motivate the students to see the form of the animal multiplication. While seeing the animal multiplication through modeling (scheme, chart, and diagram), the students had an idea to calculate new animals had been formed, and used multiple numeral to determine the sum of the new animals. From the multiple numeral, an idea to state it in terms of repetitive numeral would bring the students into a definition of exponential. Based on the result above, it's suggested that context containing multiplication form be used, let the students see multiplication, and the students do it mathematically into the basic concept when they are learning exponential.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the student’s higher order thinking skill (HOTS) after learning using the PMRI through LSLC is done approach to the material of number patterns in class VIII. This type of research is descriptive. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII.5 Junior High School number 18 Palembang amounting to 31 students. Data collectin techniques used were observations, giving test questions amounted to one questons in the form of descriptions, and interviews. After conducting the research, there have been many indicators of higher order thinking skills raised by students even though there are still some students who don’t bring up indicators. In addition, by using the PMRI approach and the LSLC system, students become mutually learning and active in learning. The conclusion of this research is the ability of HOTS students in class VIII.5 is enough, which can be seen from the scores obtained by students in the test questions that are in the range of grades 41-60. In addition, the emergence of the analysis (C4) indicator most often appears as much as 63.33%, evaluation (C5) as much as 30% and the creation (C6) indicator is the least indicator that appears as much as 20%.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the context to enable the students to understand the concept of volume of a sphere in class VIII. The context of this research was using a watermelon as teaching aids by using PMRI approach. The method used in this study was design research; the stages were preleminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The results of this study indicated that the role of watermelon as teaching aids supported the students to develop their knowledge about the concept of volume of a sphere, and enhance their understanding about the material so that the learnin becomes more meaningful. In giving the volume of a sphere its better not to be taught the students by giving formula directly, however they were given the opportunity to understand the volume of a sphere with their own concept in real situation. The existence of such a situation, the student will be easier to learn the material volume of a sphere at a higher level.
