Abstract

Despite the growing emphasis on numeracy as a critical outcome of mathematics education, many instructional approaches fail to connect numeracy learning with students’ reasoning development in meaningful ways. Existing research has not sufficiently explored the integration of technology-supported environments for fostering numeracy through theoretically grounded task design. Addressing this gap, the present study introduces a novel web-based learning environment grounded in numeracy theory and task design principles aimed at enhancing students' numeracy competence and mathematical reasoning. The development and implementation process involved iterative trials with 25 fifth-grade students: a one-to-one trial (n = 2), a small-group trial (n = 5), and a field trial (n = 18). Data were collected from students’ written responses on the web-based platform and their oral explanations. Findings demonstrate that the developed environment meets three key criteria: validity, as it aligns with relevant theoretical and empirical foundations; practicality, based on its usability and feasibility for students; and effectiveness, as evidenced by improved reasoning skills. These results highlight the potential of well-designed web-based learning environments to meaningfully support the development of numeracy competence while simultaneously fostering mathematical reasoning in primary education.

Abstract

The research about Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) has increased more widely since 1970. Therefore, several published articles in some journals can be found in some sources. This paper aims to provide an overview of the learning differential equation in higher education based on relevant literature. Therefore, we are interested in conducting a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology from 24 articles generated from Top 5 Scopus Q1 according to SJR reported by Scimago Journal & Country Rank in the subject area of education. The present study focuses on two aspects, namely: 1) the learning method of ODE that is proposed in the academic literature, and 2) the topic of ODE has been put forward and discussed in the academic literature. The systematic literature review found four methods of learning ODE (active learning, mathematical modelling, information, and technology communication, and geometric and qualitative solutions). Moreover, we also concluded that the several topics of ODE in the academic literature are 1) first order of ODE, 2) Euler method, 3) application to the problem (rate of change, population model, logistic generalized, and spring-mass), 4) second-order of ODE, and 5) system of ODE. The result of this study can provide a summary of existing literature and identify the weakness or gap to be investigated further in the following research related to the topic of ODE.

Abstract

Algebra is an essential part of mathematics and is still challenging for students to understand, including algebraic forms. Difficulties concern mathematization, understanding algebraic expressions, applying arithmetic operations in numerical and algebraic expressions, understanding the concept of variables, and formulating mathematical models. The design of a Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with PMRI learning principles that integrate the context of Iftar can assist students in understanding this algebraic form. This study aims to describe the design and implementation of HLT for learning algebraic form using the context of Iftar. The method used was design research with validation studies, consisting of three main phases: preparing for the experiment, experimenting in the classroom (pilot and teaching experiment), and conducting retrospective analysis. The subjects were 18 7th-grade students of MTs Laboratorium UIN Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that learning using the context of Iftar could promote students' understanding of algebraic form, students stated a situation in algebraic form, used algebraic operations in problem solving, and provided real experience solving problems with algebra.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a PISA-type test set based on real-world contexts integrated with strategies to see its effectiveness on junior high school students' mathematical literacy skills. The background of this study is the low achievement of Indonesian students' mathematical literacy in PISA, especially in Quantity content. The method used is design research with the Tessmer model through preliminary and formative evaluation stages (self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, and small group). The research subjects were students of class VIII.5 of SMP Negeri 11 Palembang. The results showed that the developed test set was very valid (82.9%) and practical (80%), and had very high reliability (α = 0.959). Students' mathematical literacy skills were in the high (33%), medium (50%), and low (17%) categories. The achievement of the Formulate indicator was 80.83%, Employ 76.94%, and Interpret 70.56%. These findings indicate that the problem set can strengthen students' mathematical literacy skills, especially in understanding context and developing problem-solving strategies, although mathematical interpretation and justification skills still need to be improved.   Keyword : Quantity content, Mathematical literacy skills, PISA type questions
