Abstract

In an era where data is increasingly prevalent, statistical literacy skills are essential for active citizenship and informed decision-making. For future generations, prospective teachers play a role in developing this skill. However, current instructional approaches often overlook the integration of practical applications and local wisdom, limiting students' ability to connect abstract statistical concepts with real-world experiences. The objective of this research is to design a Learning Trajectory (LT) that supports the statistical literacy skills of prospective teachers by utilizing a hybrid learning strategy that integrates local knowledge from South Sumatra as context. A total of 60 prospective teachers from a mathematics education study program participated in this study. A design research method was employed, specifically utilizing a validation study. The research unfolded in three stages: preparation for the experiment, the experimental design, and the retrospective analysis. Data collection techniques included student activity sheet assessments, classroom observations, and interviews. Data analysis involved comparing the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) with the Actual Learning Trajectory (ALT) in the retrospective analysis stage to develop the LT. The results indicate that the designed LT guided students through five activities that support statistical literacy: reading and interpreting data tables using statistical situations with local wisdom from South Sumatra as context, interpreting graphs, analyzing and reflecting, exploring outliers, and making conclusions and presenting findings. These findings highlight the importance of integrating local wisdom contexts into statistical education, as well as the relevance and applicability of mathematical concepts for prospective teachers. This research contributes to the design of a learning trajectory based on a local wisdom context that can be applied in statistical literacy learning.

Abstract

Mathematical communication is a skill to articulate mathematical ideas through written and verbal expressions. Despite its importance, students often exhibit difficulties in initiating and organizing mathematical ideas, particularly in written form. Prior research highlights the critical role of communication in fostering early algebraic thinking. This study aims to: (1) examine students’ mathematical communication skills and explore how it reflects early algebraic thinking, using the commognitive framework, which encompasses word use, visual mediators, narratives, and routines, and (2) describe statistically the relationship between algebraic thinking and oral communication skills. A descriptive research design with mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 29 eighth-grade students as participants. Data was collected through written tests, and the results were analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that four students demonstrated excellent communication skills, nine students were categorized as good, 11 students as fair, three students as poor, and two students as very poor. Further analysis showed that students with stronger communication skills more effectively conveyed algebraic ideas. The results also underscore the commognitive framework practical application in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how students communicate, reason algebraically, and demonstrates the potential of the commognitive framework to support instructional design and skill development in mathematics education.

Abstract

Inspired by the wisdom of Ali bin Abi Talib—that written legacies outlive their authors—this paper presents a scientific narrative exploring the contributions of Professor Jan de Lange (JDL) to the global and Indonesian mathematics education landscape. Renowned for his work in Realistic Mathematics Education (RME), the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), JDL played a pivotal role in the transformation of Indonesia’s mathematics education reform in the late 1990s. His engagement began in 1998 when, alongside Prof. Tjeerd Plomp, he responded to an invitation from Prof. R.K. Sembiring to introduce RME as an alternative to the outdated modern mathematics approach. This effort led to the birth of Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI). The reform initiative included the selection and training of Indonesian doctoral candidates through a collaborative workshop held at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), resulting in advanced studies in the Netherlands. Among these scholars was Prof. Zulkardi, who became a central figure in promoting RME and PMRI in Indonesia. JDL’s involvement continued through mentorship, keynote lectures, and academic collaborations, significantly influencing mathematics education policy and practice. His thought-provoking publications reflect his enduring commitment to curiosity-driven, student-centered learning. The paper also acknowledges the contributions of Prof. Kees Hoogland, JDL’s close colleague and fellow RME advocate. Together, their work exemplifies a vision of mathematics as meaningful, contextual, and empowering. Their legacy lives on through generations of educators and learners shaped by their transformative ideas.

Abstract

Students experience difficulties in understanding the properties of flat shapes because learning is monotonous, so there is a need for innovation in learning flat shape material. This research aims to produce a learning trajectory for flat building materials using the context of besemah batik for elementary school students. This research uses a design research method which consists of three research steps, namely preparing for the experiment, the design experiment, and retrospective analysis. Data collection was carried out by providing student activity sheets and interviews. Data is analyzed by reducing data, presenting data, and making conclusions. The results of the research show that learning the trajectory of flat shapes using the context of besemah batik consists of four activities, namely 1) observe the besemah batik pattern, 2) redraw the besemah batik pattern, 3) writing down the characteristics of flat shapes. based on the pattern image on besemah batik, and 4) write definitions of various flat shapes and represent various flat shapes in the drawing. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the resulting learning trajectory can help students understand flat shape material.
