Abstract

Delays in detecting damage and potential theft of public street lighting remain a common problem in several areas due to reliance on manual reporting systems. Therefore, this study aimed to design and develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system for security monitoring and early detection of damage in public street lighting. The proposed system employed an ESP8266 microcontroller, a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor to detect lamp operating conditions (on/off), and an E18-D80NK infrared proximity sensor to detect object presence as an indication of theft. Monitoring data were transmitted in real time and displayed through the Blynk application as the user interface. The research method included hardware and software design, system implementation, and functional testing, including LDR sensor testing, infrared proximity sensor testing, and system delay evaluation. The experimental results showed that the system accurately detected lamp operating conditions during testing on a 22-watt street lamp and successfully detected objects with a 100% detection rate. Delay testing indicated that the system response time increased with object distance but remained within acceptable limits for monitoring applications. Overall, the developed system was effective in supporting monitoring, early damage detection, and improving the security of public street lighting.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen early childhood arts education through the revitalization of dance learning for Raudhatul Athfal (RA) and Kindergarten (TK) teachers in the Solo Raya region. The program addressed gaps in teachers’ pedagogical and technical competencies, limited instructional resources, and the lack of structured dance programs in early childhood education settings. A Community-Based Research (CBR) approach was implemented through sequential stages, including needs assessment, classroom observation, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), participatory training, and mentoring. Data were collected from 60 RA and TK teachers using interviews, questionnaires, observations, and group discussions. The results revealed that although schools acknowledged the importance of dance for children’s physical, emotional, and cultural development, teachers faced challenges in basic dance techniques, the use of learning media, and practical classroom implementation. The participatory training improved teachers’ understanding of children’s dance principles, fundamental movement skills, and strategies for integrating dance into thematic learning. In addition, teachers developed simple choreographies and learned to design age-appropriate performance activities. The mentoring phase further enhanced teacher confidence and increased the frequency of dance activities in partner schools. Overall, the program demonstrates that capacity-building initiatives in dance education contribute to improving the quality of arts education in PAUD institutions while also supporting cultural appreciation and holistic child development. Program sustainability is strengthened through collaboration with IGRA and IGTK Solo Raya.

Abstract

Headlines represent one of the most condensed forms of media discourse, requiring journalists to communicate complex events with minimal linguistic resources. To achieve brevity and impact, headlines frequently employ polysemous verbs whose meanings must be inferred rapidly and accurately despite limited context. This study investigates how thematic organization, within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), functions as a pragmatic mechanism that constrains the interpretation of polysemous expressions in English online news headlines. Using a qualitative descriptive design, thirty headlines from BBC News, The Guardian, and CNN International (January-February 2025) were analyzed through theme–rheme structure, lexical semantics, and Relevance Theory. The findings reveal a highly consistent pattern: 26 of the 30 headlines (86.7%) positioned polysemous verbs in the rheme, while the theme activated domain-specific frames economic, political, environmental, or technological that guided readers toward the intended meaning. These results demonstrate that thematic framing systematically reduces ambiguity and supports relevance driven interpretation in contexts with minimal co text. This study contributes to SFL by providing empirical evidence that the theme is not only a textual point of departure but also a meaning constraining device that shapes semantic interpretation, and it extends Relevance Theory by showing how thematic cues narrow inferential space and lower processing effort. Practically, the findings offer implications for media literacy and journalism, as recognizing how themes guide interpretation can help readers identify framing strategies in digital news and support journalists in managing potential ambiguity while maintaining communicative economy.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges of English language acquisition among Indonesian travel agents in their professional communication with international clients. Despite the growing demand for English competence in tourism, little research has examined how linguistic, affective, and contextual factors influence workplace communication in this sector. Addressing this gap, the study aims to identify specific language barriers, coping strategies, and training needs within the framework of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). A qualitative exploratory design was employed involving ten travel agents from registered agencies in Medan, North Sumatra. Data were collected through open-ended written questionnaires and were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s procedure. The analysis yielded four main themes: limited vocabulary and pronunciation, grammatical and listening comprehension difficulties, affective barriers such as anxiety and low confidence, and coping strategies alongside the need for ESP-based training. The findings reveal that English proficiency among travel agents is shaped by limited authentic exposure, insufficient output opportunities, and emotional factors that restrict communication confidence. The study highlights the necessity of contextualized ESP instruction integrating workplace simulations, pronunciation training, and confidence-building activities. These results contribute to SLA and ESP theory by emphasizing the interdependence of linguistic, affective, and contextual dimensions in professional language learning, while providing practical implications for tourism educators and industry stakeholders in designing effective English training programs.

Abstract

This exploratory study investigates the acoustic realization of English interrogative sentences produced by native Danish and Indonesian Chinese male speakers. The study aims to identify cross-linguistic tendencies in second language (L2) prosody through the analysis of three acoustic parameters: duration, intensity, and pitch. The target sentence “Do you like coffee?” was recorded under controlled conditions and analyzed using Praat software. Although based on a very small sample (two speakers per group), the analysis revealed distinct prosodic tendencies between the two groups. The Danish speakers generally produced shorter utterances with greater pitch and intensity variation, while the Indonesian Chinese speakers tended to produce longer and more uniform duration patterns with narrower pitch ranges. These patterns may reflect influences from each group’s first language rhythmic and tonal systems, though the results remain exploratory and non-generalizable due to the limited data. The findings provide preliminary insights into cross-linguistic tendencies in L2 English interrogative prosody and highlight the need for replication with larger participant groups. Pedagogically, the study underscores the potential relevance of prosody-focused pronunciation instruction for learners from syllable-timed and tonal language backgrounds.

Abstract

The skincare industry in Indonesia is experiencing rapid growth, intensifying competition among local brands. In this environment, Skincare Augment faces significant challenges low brand awareness and suboptimal brand positioning, despite its strong Unique Selling Proposition (USP) centered on Salmon DNA content (PDRN 5000 ppm). Insufficient brand recognition has directly impacted sales, which have not met targets. Thus, a more effective advertising strategy is needed to bridge the gap between product quality and consumer perception. This study aims to design an advertising strategy that enhances consumer visibility and understanding of Skincare Augment’s product advantages, utilizing the Seven Modes of the Design Innovation Process through advertising videos. Employing a mixed-methods approach combining observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires distributed to 103 respondents aged 20–40 the research revealed that 78.6% of respondents were unfamiliar with Skincare Augment. The primary barrier to consumer interest was identified as a lack of education regarding the benefits of Salmon DNA. By applying the seven-stage process goal setting, understanding context and audience, formulating insights, exploring concepts, and realizing outputs this research developed a short storytelling video advertising concept tailored for social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The final output includes a storyboard, treatment, and an advertising video emphasizing the regenerative benefits of Salmon DNA. In conclusion, the Seven Modes method provides an effective framework for crafting persuasive, educational, and relevant advertisements. This approach has the potential to increase brand awareness and strengthen Skincare Augment’s positioning in Indonesia’s competitive skincare market.
