Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication competency needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) based on teachers' perspectives and the communication abilities of the students themselves. A survey method with a quantitative approach was used, collecting data through questionnaires distributed to 41 teachers and 20 ASD students from Special Schools (SLB) in West Java. The sampling technique applied was purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 23, with descriptive analysis techniques and reliability tests to ensure the validity of the instruments. The research results reveal that students with ASD need improvements in both receptive and expressive communication competencies, particularly in understanding multi-step instructions, recognizing visual symbols, and responding to non-verbal cues and complex questions. Furthermore, challenges were found in initiating conversations and using more specific vocabulary in social interactions. This study emphasizes the importance of developing more structured and individualized teaching strategies to enhance the communication competencies of students with ASD.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the barriers faced by Indonesian secondary education students in learning English through online platforms during the COVID-19 outbreak. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with five students from SMA Negeri 13 Makassar using a snowball sampling technique. The findings reveal seven key barriers: lack of clear instruction and limited teacher engagement, excessive assignment loads with minimal explanation, limited digital literacy among students and teachers, unstable internet connectivity, poor communication and delayed teacher responses, low student motivation, including psychological and emotional challenges, and an unsupportive home learning environment. These interrelated barriers significantly hindered students' ability to engage meaningfully in online English learning. The study highlights the importance of clear instructional design, digital competence, consistent communication, and supportive learning environments in ensuring effective online education. The findings are expected to inform future educational strategies and policies for more equitable and accessible English language learning, especially during times of crisis.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions and challenges related to the use of the Small Group Discussion (SGD) method in a non-formal English learning context, specifically in the EZPZ English Community in Makassar, Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine students from three different proficiency levels: beginner, basic, and intermediate. The findings reveal that most students have a positive perception of SGD, appreciating the enjoyable learning atmosphere, increased confidence, and opportunities for interaction. However, several challenges also emerged, such as dominant participants, a lack of vocabulary, and difficulties understanding discussion topics. These challenges are categorized into internal and external factors. The study emphasizes the importance of ability-based grouping in enhancing student comfort and engagement during SGD in non-formal education settings.

Abstract

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education continues to expand, yet its effectiveness in improving learning outcomes requires further examination, particularly with regard to the role of self-efficacy in digital learning in Indonesia. This study extends Bandura’s self-efficacy construct by conceptualizing AI as a latent mediating variable functioning as an adaptive educational mechanism through feedback, personalized resources, and dynamic scaffolding. A quantitative approach was employed via an online survey conducted between February and May 2024, yielding 279 valid responses from secondary and higher education students across several Indonesian provinces. Data were analyzed using SEM-PLS with SmartPLS 3.0. The results show that self-efficacy moderately predicts AI adoption (β = 0.373), AI integration strongly predicts learning behavior and performance (β = 0.649), while the direct pathway from self-efficacy is relatively weak (β = 0.144), with the indirect pathway mediated by AI substantially stronger (mediation effect = 0.242). Theoretically, these findings enrich Bandura’s framework of self-efficacy in the context of digital learning by highlighting AI as a central mediating construct, while practically they provide implications for adaptive learning strategies, digital education policy, and technology-driven pedagogical innovation.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine students’ perception of the use of the Cornell note-taking method in improving reading retention. The theories underlying this research were Organizational Behaviour Theory, as presented by Robbins (2003), and the perception framework proposed by Kiong (2009), which highlights three key indicators of perception: acceptance, understanding, and assessment. Data were collected through interviews; this research applied a stratified purposive sampling technique. Participants were selected based on their post-test performance, which was categorized into students who had the best scores after conducting the post-test at SMPN 1 Segeri. Findings revealed that students’ perceptions of using the Cornell Note-taking method to improve reading retention had a positive perception. The study recommends that students, teachers, and future researchers investigate other methods that can improve reading retention and investigate the long-term effects of using the Cornell note-taking method at various educational levels, such as senior high school or university.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the effect of applying effective questioning types on university students’ critical reading skills. Many students in higher education face challenges when engaging with academic texts, often limiting their efforts to surface comprehension rather than deeper analysis. To address this issue, the study implemented a framework of questioning—analytical, evaluative, interpretive, inferential, and synthetic—designed to promote higher-order thinking. A pre-experimental design was employed using a one-group pre-test and post-test format with 45 undergraduate students from English Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Literature Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia. Over four sessions, students were guided through structured questioning activities aimed at encouraging deeper engagement with reading materials. Data were collected using essay-based critical reading tests, and scores were verified by two independent raters to ensure reliability. Findings indicated a significant improvement in students’ performance, with mean scores rising from 61.8 on the pre-test to 72.4 on the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test (Z = -5.037, p < .001) confirmed that this improvement was statistically significant. The results suggest that structured questioning fosters analytical, interpretive, and evaluative engagement with texts, thereby bridging the gap between comprehension and critical literacy. The study contributes to reading pedagogy by demonstrating the role of questioning in cultivating reflective and independent readers at the university level. It recommends that lecturers integrate varied questioning strategies into reading instruction to strengthen students’ academic literacy and prepare them for the demands of higher education.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and the strategies they implement in teaching reading comprehension at MAS As’adiyah Puteri Pusat Sengkang. The research is grounded in the context of a semi-urban religious-based school where students generally have low exposure to English outside the classroom, limited vocabulary mastery, and low reading motivation. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The research involved two English teachers as key participants who regularly teach reading comprehension. The findings indicate four major challenges: (1) diverse student abilities, (2) lack of vocabulary mastery, (3) low student motivation and reading interest, and (4) time constraints. To address these issues, the teachers applied various strategies including (1) cognitive strategies (skimming, scanning, summarizing), (2) reciprocal teaching, (3) pre-reading strategies (activating prior knowledge), (4) independent reading, and (5) multimodal reading strategy. In conclusion, despite the multiple challenges in teaching reading comprehension in EFL classrooms, the application of appropriate, adaptive, and context-sensitive strategies can significantly enhance students’ reading ability and engagement in the learning process. Keywords: challenges, strategies, EFL teachers, reading comprehension
