Abstract

Abstract

Background: The challenge of modernization in Islamic boarding schools involves balancing the formal religious curriculum with practical skills and daily life lessons. Purpose: This study explores the role of the hidden curriculum in the construction of adab (manners) education at the Qodratullah Banyuasin Islamic Boarding School in South Sumatra, Indonesia. Adab education, integral to Islamic character formation, extends beyond formal learning and is deeply embedded in the social interactions, daily activities, and institutional culture of Islamic boarding schools. Method: Utilizing a case study approach, this research employs interviews, observations, and documentation as data collection methods. Result: The findings indicate that the hidden curriculum significantly contributes to the development of adab through three primary inputs: figure-based education, literacy, and activities. Figure-based education, exemplified by the role of the kyai (Islamic scholar), establishes a model for students in terms of behavior, values, and norms. Literacy-based education fosters critical thinking and intellectual growth through the study of Islamic texts. Activity-based education emphasizes social interactions and extracurricular activities that reinforce communal values and ethics. Conclusion: This research highlights the importance of the hidden curriculum in shaping students' character, demonstrating how adab education in Islamic boarding schools provides a holistic framework for character and moral development, combining both formal and informal educational processes. The study offers valuable insights for educational policymakers seeking to integrate Islamic values into the educational system while addressing the challenges of modernization and globalization.

Abstract

Background: Character education plays a crucial role in shaping a generation that excels not only academically but also morally. In this context, HAMKA’s educational philosophy offers significant insights for developing an Islamic-based character education system. Purpose: This study aims to identify, analyze, and examine HAMKA’s construction of character education by focusing on three core components: input, process, and output. Method: A qualitative library research approach was employed by analyzing HAMKA’s writings and related literature, incorporating perspectives from psychology, sociology, and education to achieve a comprehensive understanding. Result: The findings reveal that HAMKA's character education system comprises: (1) input, including a character-based curriculum, educators as role models, a supportive learning environment, and the involvement of parents and the community; (2) process, involving value integration into learning, habituation of good behavior, counseling, and character assessment; and (3) output, resulting in individuals with noble character, emotional and social intelligence, independence, responsibility, and adaptability in diverse societies. HAMKA emphasizes a holistic and integrated approach that demands collaboration among educational institutions, educators, families, and communities to foster character formation aligned with Islamic values. Conclusion: This study affirms that HAMKA’s character education model remains highly relevant and applicable in contemporary educational contexts, offering practical guidance for implementing morally grounded education within modern Islamic schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of Interactive Multimedia Learning Objects (IMLO) on the reading interest of mentally impaired students at SLB Al Qasmi Watampone. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through classroom observation, teacher interviews, and document analysis. The focus was on four key indicators of reading interest: joyful feeling, willingness, attention, and participation, as adapted from Slameto (2010). Five students with mentally impaired were observed during reading sessions that incorporated IMLO, while two teachers provided insights on students' behavior and learning progress. The findings revealed that the use of IMLO significantly improved students’ engagement in all four aspects of reading interest. Students showed greater emotional enjoyment, motivation, focus, and active involvement in reading activities when interacting with multimedia-based materials. Teachers noted that IMLO encouraged autonomy and curiosity, although limitations such as limited device access, the need for supervision, and weak memory retention remained challenges. Overall, IMLO proved to be an effective tool for supporting literacy development among mentally impaired students. The study suggests that with adequate infrastructure and teacher training, IMLO can be implemented successfully in inclusive education settings to enhance student motivation and participation in reading.

Abstract

This study explores the factors influencing students’ Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms and examines teaching strategies that can effectively foster this willingness. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research was conducted at an EFL Classroom in Indonesia, through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with selected EFL students. The study applies Macintyre et al.’s (1998) heuristic model of WTC as its theoretical foundation. The findings reveal that students’ WTC is shaped by a dynamic interaction of internal, social, and instructional factors. Internally, communicative self-confidence, anxiety levels, and motivation (both instrumental and integrative) played a significant role. Socially, peer support, classroom atmosphere, and fear of negative evaluation were identified as crucial influences. The flexible use of both Bahasa Indonesia and English also helped reduce anxiety and increase participation. Pedagogically, students responded more positively to interactive strategies compared to traditional lectures. Approaches such as cooperative learning, problem-based learning, and project-based learning were found to be the most effective in encouraging active communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Overall, this research emphasizes that WTC is not fixed, but rather influenced by contextual and emotional readiness. Teachers are encouraged to implement student-centred and emotionally supportive strategies to create a classroom environment where learners feel confident to speak.
