Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) has gained attention in various levels of education, particularly in higher education. The importance of CT competency in problem-solving has led to the conclusion that CT needs to be developed through the learning process. Therefore, prospective teachers become the main target for enhancing CT competencies. The aim of this research is to conduct a systematic literature review on efforts to improve CT skills in pre-service teachers. The research method used is a comprehensive search of various databases, specifically Scopus, using the keywords "computational thinking of pre-service teacher" to obtain relevant articles. A total of 15 articles that present empirical results of the use of various applications and specific training methods were selected to address the research question. The research findings indicate that the most widely used applications in higher education to enhance students' problem-solving with computational thinking are Scratch, followed by Python and code.org. This application was chosen because it uses block-based programming, making it easier to use. Improving pre-service teachers' CT skills requires not only providing them with the ability to use the application but also equipping them with training on how to create educational content using the application, which they can later use in their teaching at schools.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to determine the profile of students regarding literacy skills for global warming material. This research uses a quantitative descriptive method to reveal the results of the research obtained based on students' responses to the 10 questions developed. This research was conducted at a school in Surabaya with a total of 15 respondents consisting of 4 men and 11 women. The results obtained were then analyzed using the Rasch Model with Winstep software to make it easier to map the level of instrument validity and the level of students' literacy skills. The results of this research reveal that the relationship between the instrument developed and students has very poor validity and reliability values with a value obtained of 0.22. However, the results of further analysis can map item difficulty levels and students' ability levels based on the Wright Map where students who have very high literacy skills are coded 01LK and 08PK while the most difficult item is Q2. Apart from that, students who have very poor literacy skills are good at coding 07LK while the easiest item is with code Q1. In this way, there is a need to improve problem instruments and further research to continue to develop the potential of scientific literature, not only on global warming material. Keywords: instruments, literacy scientific, measurements, rasch model. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v24i4.pp912-922

Abstract

Disaster literacy is a crucial competency for communities at risk of natural hazards, especially for higher education students who will significantly contribute to future preparedness efforts.  This research aimed to examine the efficacy of digital edutainment, including films and interactive content on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Coursera, in improving disaster literacy.  We conducted a qualitative content analysis of materials concerning disaster knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills pertinent to mitigation and emergency response. Results indicate that edutainment effectively enhances foundational knowledge and promotes proactive attitudes; however, practical skills, including evacuation procedures and preparedness drills, are inadequately represented.  It is advisable to collaborate with scientific agencies such as BMKG and BNPB to ensure the accuracy and relevance of content.  This research emphasises the importance of incorporating edutainment into higher education curricula as an effective combination of learning and entertainment, supporting a comprehensive approach that integrates knowledge, attitudes, and skills to enhance societal preparedness for future disasters.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and examine students' conceptions of Work and Energy in relation to the Indonesian Capital City in East Kalimantan, using the Four-Tier Test of Work and Energy (FORTUNE) Open-Ended. The 4D methodology was followed, involving defining, designing, developing, and disseminating the research. The FORTUNE test, comprising 13 questions, was administered to 70 tenth-grade students (44 girls and 26 boys) aged 15 to 16. Rasch analysis was applied to categorize student responses into seven distinct categories: Sound Understanding (SU), Partial Positive (PP), Partial Neutral (P0), Partial Negative (PN), Misconception (MC), No Understanding (NU), and No Coding (NC). The results revealed that FORTUNE effectively diagnosed students' conceptions, with 61% of responses falling into the Misconception (MC) category, while only 3% were classified as Partial Positive (PP). Notably, students displayed misconceptions in questions of moderate difficulty, as indicated by Rasch analysis. In conclusion, this study successfully developed and implemented the FORTUNE Open-Ended test to assess students' conceptions of Work and Energy in the context of the Indonesian Capital City in East Kalimantan. The findings highlight the prevalence of misconceptions among students, particularly in questions of moderate difficulty. Addressing and rectifying these misconceptions require targeted instructional strategies to foster a deeper and more accurate understanding of the topic. Future research should explore the effectiveness of intervention programs aimed at enhancing students' conceptual understanding of Work and Energy.

Abstract

The research aims to develop a four-tier test for optical instrument materials. The method used in this study is a 4D design that includes defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. The instrument used consisted of fifteen items in the form of a four-tier closed-ended test. The research participants were 60 female and 15 male students from West Java in grade 11 high school who were randomly selected. The analysis is divided into four parts. The first analysis is a CVR and multi-rater Rasch measurement of the original validation results. The second analysis involves calculating the percentage of students' scores based on their conception scores. The third is a Rasch Model analysis of the instrument's validity and reliability. The Rasch Model is used in the fourth analysis to examine conceptions and misconceptions. Following the analysis, all items met the CVR value criteria. I2, I7, I9, I10, I12, I15, and I3 have logit values less than zero and are corrected based on expert feedback. The second analysis reveals that students continue to have misconceptions about each item. According to the third analysis, all items were valid and reliable, with a Cronbach Alpha value 0.78 in either category. According to the fourth analysis, conception is inversely related to misconception. The fewer misconceptions, the better the students' conceptions, and vice versa. However, confidence can also be a dissonant influence. Students who experience misconceptions need to be given appropriate treatment to reduce misconceptions about optical instrument materials. Hopefully, the four-tier closed-ended test that has been developed can be used and developed into a better five-level test to investigate the causes of each student's misconceptions.

Abstract

Misconceptions frequently occur in various physics concepts, including momentum and impulse. Misconceptions in students must be addressed since they can hinder the learning process. This study aimed at investigating students' misconceptions on momentum and impulse material after implementing Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations. The method employed in this study was a quasi-experimental design with One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This research was conducted on 30 students of the tenth grade determined by the purposive sampling technique. Fifteen four-tier test items were used as the research instrument. The N-gain analysis was performed to know the reduction of misconceptions. The results showed that the N-gain value obtained was 0.46 with moderate interpretation, meaning that Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) aided with computer simulations could reduce student misconceptions. The results also indicated that the misconception after treatment was smaller than before treatment. This phenomenon can be seen from the reduction of misconceptions by 11.6% after implementing Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Interactive Conceptual Instruction (ICI) with computer simulations can facilitate students in the learning process so that misconceptions can be reduced.
