Abstract

This study aims to analyse the validity and reliability of an instrument for assessing reflective thinking skills on the topic of wave-particle dualism in modern physics lectures using the Rasch model. The Rasch model was selected for its capability to provide a more in-depth analysis of item performance and respondent ability, as well as to identify misfitting or biased items. The research method employed is a descriptive quantitative approach, utilizing Winsteps software for data analysis. The sample consists of 36 students enrolled in modern physics lectures at a university in West Nusa Tenggara. The results indicate that the instrument has excellent item reliability (0.91) and excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha 0.86), although the respondent reliability falls into the weak category (0.62). The instrument's validity also meets the Rasch model's acceptance criteria, with infit MNSQ and outfit MNSQ values ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. Further analysis reveals that some items are misfitting and need revision to ensure fairness and consistency in measuring reflective thinking skills. These findings make a significant contribution to the development of more accurate and reliable assessment tools in physics education

Abstract

Critical thinking is recognized as a fundamental competency among the essential skills required in the 21st century. However, students' critical thinking skills have not yet developed optimally, highlighting the need for instructional models that actively engage students throughout the learning process. One approach to fostering active student engagement is the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model integrated with the STEAM approach. This study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental method using a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 62 tenth-grade students from a public senior high school in Bandung, Indonesia. The research instrument comprised nine essay questions designed to assess students' critical thinking skills. The data were analyzed using the normalized gain (N-Gain) to determine the improvement in critical thinking skills, while the Mann–Whitney U test was employed to examine the effect of the instructional model. The findings revealed that the improvement in students' critical thinking skills in the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, with N-Gain scores of 0.471 and 0.342, respectively, both of which were classified as moderate. Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney U test at the 5% significance level indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Project-Based Learning model integrated with the STEAM approach has a significant positive effect on improving students' critical thinking skills in the topic of Alternative Energy.

Abstract

Kampus Mengajar Program is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative aimed at improving literacy and numeracy skills among students in underprivileged schools. This study explores strategies for optimizing supervision and preparing physics education students for participation in the program. Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with lecturers from a physics education study program at a private university. The findings revealed that lecturers have a strong understanding of the program's objectives, yet the primary focus on elementary and middle school levels poses challenges in integrating physics-specific expertise. Students require comprehensive preparation, including pedagogical skills, mental readiness, and technological proficiency. Product-based assignments, such as teaching modules and learning media, along with process-based evaluations, were deemed effective in bridging field experiences with graduate learning outcomes (CPL). The synergy between supervision and the Kampus Mengajar Program fosters holistic learning, enhancing students’ practical skills. Curriculum adjustments to better integrate physics into elementary education contexts are necessary to address the gap in subject relevance. With structured supervision strategies and adequate preparation, the Kampus Mengajar Program can enhance students’ readiness as competent and adaptable educators in a dynamic educational landscape.

Abstract

This research is a preliminary study aimed at analyzing the methods of teaching basic physics applied in the pharmacy program, as well as its implications for the relevance of physics concepts in pharmacy courses and the development of students' system thinking skills. A cross-sectional survey method was used, employing a structured questionnaire based on the Likert scale, involving physics course instructors from private and public universities. The research findings indicate that, although basic physics has significant potential in contributing to the development of the system thinking skills required by pharmacy graduates, challenges in integrating physics concepts with pharmacy courses still exist. The pharmacy curriculum's focus on pharmaceutical and health aspects may overlook students' understanding of basic physics. Therefore, the importance of developing teaching methods and physics laboratory practices that are appropriate for the pharmacy context becomes clearer. This research concluded that there is a need for the development of more suitable learning methods for basic physics courses in the pharmacy program, with an emphasis on developing system thinking skills crucial in the field of health, and the integration of pharmacy laboratories as a learning support. This is expected to enhance the understanding of physics concepts in the pharmacy context and build relevant system thinking skills for graduates of the pharmacy program.
