Abstract

Acalypha indica L., commonly known as Indian copperleaf, is a wild medicinal plant typically found along roadsides and in gardens. Its leaves contain various bioactive compounds, including saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins. Traditionally, the plant has been used for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, which help combat oxidative stress caused by free radicals. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethanol extract of Acalypha indica L. leaves in treating gastric ulcers in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research was a true experimental study involving the extraction of Acalypha indica L. leaves using ethanol, preparation of the extract suspension, and induction of gastric ulcers in rats using aspirin at a dose of 800 mg/kg body weight (BW) administered orally. A total of 30 male Rattus norvegicus rats were divided into six groups. Three control groups is Ulcer control, Negative control, Positive control. Three treatment groups receiving ethanol extract of Acalypha indica leaves (EEAIL) at doses of: EEDAA 50 mg/kgBB, EEDAA100 mg/kg BB, EEDAA 200 mg/kgBB. Ulcer induction was carried out daily until surgical examination was performed on days 4, 9, and 14. Macroscopic observations of the stomach were conducted to assess the number of ulcers and ulcer scores. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s post hoc test to determine significant differences between groups. Macroscopic examination showed that the ethanol extract of Acalypha indica leaves (EEAIL) reduced the number of gastric ulcers. Complete healing of ulcers was observed in the positive control group, as well as in the groups receiving EEAIL at 200 mg/kg BW and 100 mg/kg BW, by day 14. In contrast, the 50 mg/kg BW group and the ulcer control group showed no signs of healing by the end of the observation period. The most effective dose was 200 mg/kg BW, demonstrating the highest capacity to reduce the number of gastric ulcers.

Abstract

Rice straw is an abundant agricultural by-product commonly used as livestock feed or burned as waste. It contains cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica, which can be processed into activated carbon capable of adsorbing impurities and excess oil from the skin. To date, the utilization of rice straw has been limited mainly to compost fertilizer and planting media. Meanwhile, facial cleansing soaps made from natural extracts, eco-friendly ingredients, and affordable materials are increasingly popular. The objective of this study was to produce activated carbon from rice straw and apply it in the formulation of a facial cleansing soap product. This research employed an experimental laboratory approach with a quantitative descriptive method to determine the effectiveness of rice straw–based activated carbon in facial soap formulations. The procedure began with the carbonization of rice straw powder, followed by characterization of the activated carbon through moisture content analysis, ash content test, and FT-IR functional group analysis. The liquid soap was formulated into three variations and evaluated for its quality through organoleptic observation, pH measurement, cleansing ability test, and oil adsorption test. The results showed that activated carbon derived from rice straw had a moisture content of 8.92%, ash content of 7.68%, and exhibited functional groups such as –OH, aliphatic C–H, aromatic C=C, aldehyde C=O, and alcohol C–O based on FT-IR analysis. The facial soap formulations containing rice straw–based activated carbon demonstrated safe pH values—F1 = 5.46, F2 = 6.04, and F3 = 6.8—and exhibited enhanced cleansing and oil-adsorbing properties, with the highest oil adsorption value reaching 86%. These findings indicate that activated carbon from rice straw can be effectively applied in the formulation of facial cleansing soap that is safe and beneficial for skin health.

Abstract

Peron Village, located in Limbangan Subdistrict, Kendal Regency, lies on the western slopes of Mount Ungaran and forms part of the Bodri Watershed (DAS Bodri), one of the priority watersheds in Central Java. The village has developed an agroforestry system integrating coffee, sugar palm, and rice fields; however, as an upstream area, the land faces severe ecological pressures in the form of high soil erosion. This erosion threatens to reduce land productivity and increase the risk of flooding in downstream regions. A strategic intervention undertaken is the planting of flamboyant trees (D. regia) and tabebuya trees (T. rosea) as protective and shade vegetation. Both species possess strong root systems and dense canopies, making them effective in reducing erosion rates, enhancing water infiltration, and enriching the aesthetic value of the village landscape. Beyond their ecological functions, flamboyant and tabebuya trees also contribute to the community’s socio-cultural well-being by creating green spaces that foster comfort and strengthen the identity of the agroforestry landscape. Thus, the planting of flamboyant and tabebuya trees in Peron Village serves not only as a measure to mitigate erosion and flooding but also as an integrative strategy for sustaining ecological balance, economic resilience, and social cohesion in the buffer zone of the Bodri Watershed.   Keywords: Bodri Watershed; Agroforestry; Flood Mitigation; Upstream Greening; Landscape Aesthetics
