Abstract

This study examines the illocutionary acts used by the stalker in the Netflix docuseries ‘Can I Tell You a Secret?’. Illocutionary acts are analyzed to understand the intended meaning of the stalker’s communication strategies. The objectives of the study are to find out the dominant illocutionary acts used by stalker and their intended meaning. This study employs the qualitative descriptive design and uses the subtitle of the series as its data. The data of the study are taken from the subtitle of the Netflix docuseries ‘Can I Tell You a Secret?’, and then are classified into Searle’s illocutionary act types. The study finds that the stalker commonly uses directive illocutionary acts (49,3%) in his dialogues. This phenomenon shows that the stalker uses his communication strategies to manipulate and control the victim. His strategies also instill fear and doubt in his target.  Besides, other types of illocutionary acts are also being employed in stalker’s dialogues. This maintains a continual threat and keeps the victim anxious about what might happen next.

Abstract

The human need to have good and positive personality qualities in everyday life. Good character is very important to achieve true success and happiness in life. This research was conducted with the aim of understanding the concept of character in more depth, finding the correlation between character and success and happiness in life, as well as developing strategies and techniques to improve good character. This article discusses the concept of character from Muslim and Western perspectives. The research method used is a qualitative method with a library science approach. The results of this research show that from a Muslim perspective, good character is character that is based on religious teachings and always tries to improve itself from time to time. The concept of character in Islam has a close relationship with the moral and ethical values taught by the Islamic religion. Meanwhile, from a western perspective, the concept of character has a broader meaning and is not related to a particular religion. A good character in a western perspective is a character who has strong and positive personality qualities. Even though there are different views, the concept of character still has a very important role in human life to achieve true success and happiness. Therefore, understanding and developing good character needs to be carried out by individuals from these two perspectives, so that they are able to overcome challenges in life in a positive and constructive way.

Abstract

Abstract

Religious moderation is an increasingly pressing national priority in Indonesia. However, campus mosque programs, despite their strategic position as co-curricular development spaces in higher education, have not been systematically designed based on measurable moderation indicators. This study aims to: describe the operational model of campus mosque revitalization in promoting religious moderation among students; and assess the strengths and weaknesses of this model in relation to the objectives of religious moderation. A qualitative cross-sectional case study was conducted at five purposively selected campus mosques in West Java: Al-Furqon Mosque (UPI), Salman Mosque (ITB), Ikomah Mosque (UIN Sunan Gunung Djati), Agung Mosque (UNPAD), and Ukhuwah Islamiyah Mosque (UI). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, contextual observations, and document analysis, then analyzed using thematic analysis. The revitalization of campus mosques in the five locations was implemented through three integrated dimensions of worship, education, and welfare with a cadre-based and inclusive management system. Its main strengths are: holistic development, inclusive governance, cadre sustainability, and contextual responsiveness. However, weaknesses remain: the lack of indicator-based design, standard operating procedures, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, minimal interfaith literacy, and formal integration with general and character education. In conclusion, campus mosques have a strong foundation for religious moderation, but require a more structured, indicator-based, and institutionalized revitalization model to ensure measurable and sustainable impact.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an effective strategy model for internalizing the values of faith and piety within non-religious courses in Islamic higher education. Despite institutional expectations to cultivate holistic student character, existing instructional practices often lack structured frameworks that integrate spiritual values into general course content. Employing a Research and Development design using the ADDIE model Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation this study identifies learner needs, designs value-integrated instructional components, develops prototype materials, and evaluates their feasibility and effectiveness. Mixed data from surveys, interviews, observations, expert validation, and pilot implementation reveal that the model enhances students’ spiritual awareness, engagement, and character formation without compromising academic competencies. The study concludes that the IMTAQ-based strategy model provides a practical and pedagogically grounded approach for strengthening the integration of faith and piety across non-religious course settings in Islamic higher education. Keywords: Faith and piety internalization; IMTAQ-Strategy model; Islamic higher education.

Abstract

Descriptive classical balaghah approaches have dominated figurative studies in the Qur'an. In its development, Qur'anic studies have begun to utilise cognitive linguistic approaches, albeit to a limited extent. These two approaches have not been systematically integrated, even though they share a common vision in understanding indirect meaning. This study aims to map the integration of the concept of Kināyah in classical balaghah with the conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) framework in Qur'anic linguistic studies through a systematic literature review. Following the PRISMA 2020 protocol and searching for data from the Scopus database, 15 articles were obtained that met the inclusion criteria and became the object of analysis. The findings show that studies discussing kinayah and CMT in the Qur'an are still scattered and partial. The characteristics of the definition and classification of kinayah refer to classical, pragmatic, and contextual semantic approaches. CMT is applied variably to explain abstract concepts in the Qur'an through metaphorical mapping, both in eschatological and theological themes, as well as in social discourse. The main challenges in integrating these two approaches include epistemological and terminological differences, as well as linguistic and cultural gaps. However, the opportunities for integration appear promising, especially at the textual and semantic analysis levels through a hybrid approach. This study emphasises the importance of developing an interdisciplinary methodological framework based on kinayah-CMT in Qur'anic linguistic studies. These findings reinforce linguistic-interpretation epistemology, advance adaptive models for Qur’anic figurative analysis, and open new directions for interdisciplinary Qur’anic studies in the digital age.

Abstract

Han characters (汉字) constitute one of the oldest continuously used logographic writing systems in the world, and as such they encode millennia of accumulated cultural values, social hierarchies, and ideological assumptions. This study empirically investigates the representation of women through Han characters containing the radical 女 (nǚ, ‘woman’) by employing a cultural-linguistic framework integrating corpus-based quantitative analysis, semiotic deconstruction, and critical discourse analysis. The research corpus comprises 214 characters drawn from the Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典) and the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (现代汉语词典, 7th edition, 2016); a supplementary diachronic corpus of 50 characters with documented oracle bone forms was drawn from the Xiaoxuetang Database of Ancient Chinese Scripts (小學堂). Frequency analysis was conducted against the MARKUS corpus (45 classical texts spanning the Han through Qing dynasties, totaling approximately 2.3 million characters). Results indicate that of the 214 characters analyzed, 61.2% carry connotations that subordinate, restrict, or pathologize the feminine; 22.4% are semantically neutral-descriptive; and only 16.4% bear positive connotations. These findings confirm that the Han writing system functions as an ideological apparatus that reproduces and consolidates patriarchal norms embedded in pre-modern and contemporary Chinese society. The study has implications for language pedagogy in the Indonesian context of Chinese-language education, for script reform policy, and for the broader scholarly debate on writing systems as ideological apparatus.
