Abstract

This study aims to examine violations of the Maxim of Quality in discussions featured on the YouTube program Bocah-Bocah Kosong X Indy Barends based on Grice’s Maxim Theory (1975). The analysis focuses on utterances that lack evidential support and those that are hyperbolic, metaphorical, imaginative, or fantastical in nature. Adopting a qualitative pragmatic approach, the data were analyzed through content analysis, supported by the calculation of intercoder reliability using Krippendorff’s alpha and multimodal triangulation. The findings reveal that the most dominant forms of violation are hyperbolic humor (38%), absurd metaphors (22%), false identity claims (18%), and supernatural or fantasy-related statements (12%). These results indicate that violations of the Maxim of Quality do not merely represent communicative errors; rather, they function as performative strategies employed by Generation Z to construct humor, social solidarity, and creative, imaginative speaker identities within digital spaces. Theoretically, this study contributes to contemporary pragmatic scholarship by positioning maxim violations as meaningful communicative practices in digital culture. Nevertheless, the study is limited by the narrow scope of data, which is confined to a single episode with a relatively small number of utterances, as well as by the potential for performativity bias due to the entertainment-oriented nature of the content. Accordingly, future research is recommended to expand the data corpus, compare diverse contexts of Generation Z digital communication, and develop cross-maxim analyses of Grice’s framework in order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the pragmatic strategies of the digital generation.

Abstract

Descriptive classical balaghah approaches have dominated figurative studies in the Qur'an. In its development, Qur'anic studies have begun to utilise cognitive linguistic approaches, albeit to a limited extent. These two approaches have not been systematically integrated, even though they share a common vision in understanding indirect meaning. This study aims to map the integration of the concept of Kināyah in classical balaghah with the conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) framework in Qur'anic linguistic studies through a systematic literature review. Following the PRISMA 2020 protocol and searching for data from the Scopus database, 15 articles were obtained that met the inclusion criteria and became the object of analysis. The findings show that studies discussing kinayah and CMT in the Qur'an are still scattered and partial. The characteristics of the definition and classification of kinayah refer to classical, pragmatic, and contextual semantic approaches. CMT is applied variably to explain abstract concepts in the Qur'an through metaphorical mapping, both in eschatological and theological themes, as well as in social discourse. The main challenges in integrating these two approaches include epistemological and terminological differences, as well as linguistic and cultural gaps. However, the opportunities for integration appear promising, especially at the textual and semantic analysis levels through a hybrid approach. This study emphasises the importance of developing an interdisciplinary methodological framework based on kinayah-CMT in Qur'anic linguistic studies. These findings reinforce linguistic-interpretation epistemology, advance adaptive models for Qur’anic figurative analysis, and open new directions for interdisciplinary Qur’anic studies in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practices of social domination and the experiences of alienation encountered by Gregor Samsa in Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis through the integration of Seeman’s Alienation Theory and Pratto’s Social Dominance Theory. This investigation emerges from the need to understand how power relations within the family sphere and pressures from the capitalist work system shape conditions of estrangement that erode an individual’s identity, dignity, and social relations. The research employs a qualitative approach using close reading techniques applied to the literary text. The analysis is strengthened by Abrams’s model, which emphasizes the relationship between text, reader, and contemporary social context, thereby enabling a more interdisciplinary interpretation. The findings reveal that Gregor experiences the five forms of alienation identified by Seeman—powerlessness, meaninglessness, social isolation, self-estrangement, and anomie. These forms of alienation emerge as direct consequences of the family’s structure of domination, led by the father and reproduced by Grete, and are further reinforced by pressures from the capitalist economic system that reduces Gregor to an instrument of production. The results demonstrate that social domination operates not only through physical and symbolic power but also through internalization processes that lead Gregor to accept himself as “the other,” ultimately causing the loss of his identity and the meaning of his existence. This study offers an original contribution by addressing a gap in the literature through the integration of Seeman’s and Pratto’s theoretical frameworks—a combination rarely applied in Kafka studies—to show that alienation cannot be understood solely as a psychological phenomenon but must be viewed as the outcome of structural power relations within the family. The study also affirms that literary works can serve as reflective media for examining the dynamics of domination, structural violence, and the erosion of human dignity in contemporary social realities.

Abstract

This study aims to align assessment in teaching and learning of the Kitabah material based on Assessment for Learning (AFL). To achieve this goal, this study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, utilizing two data sources: primary data collected through interviews and observations, and secondary data obtained from the MTs Arabic curriculum and the seventh-grade teaching modules at MTs Al-Musyawarah Lembang. The study population consisted of 26 students with 7 samples selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis included data condensation, presentation, and verification through the application of triangulation of sources and methods to ensure data validity. The results of the study indicate that assessment practices are not fully aligned with the principles of Assessment for Learning of the four main prerequisites for optimal AfL integration, only one has been implemented: teachers simplifying learning objectives according to student abilities. Other prerequisites, such as assessments, do not provide constructive feedback. Students have not been trained to assess themselves or their peers, and schools do not adequately support the learning of the kitabah material, including the provision of textbooks that are more suited to students' abilities.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of assessment as learning through reflective evaluation in Arabic reading (qirā’ah) instruction for fifth-grade students at Islamic elementary schools. The research aims to examine how reflective assessment fosters students’ awareness of their own learning processes and contributes to the development of metacognitive reading skills. Using a descriptive qualitative design with a phenomenological approach, data were collected from fifteen purposively selected students through classroom observations, evaluative judgment, and reflective questionnaires. The data were analyzed thematically to identify reflective patterns in students’ responses. The findings indicate that students began to demonstrate reflective awareness in reading, particularly in self-assessment, managing personal biases, and seeking opportunities for feedback. However, challenges remain in discerning text quality and evaluating digital sources. The study contributes a novel perspective on reflective learning in Arabic education by positioning students as active participants in the assessment process. It suggests that assessment as learning can transform Arabic reading instruction into a more participatory, reflective, and lifelong learning-oriented practice.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate the analysis of metaphors in the Quran with Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The primary focus of the research is the analysis of four verses with legal dimensions, recommended by experts in Islamic interpretation and law for their complex metaphorical structure and legal impact. The research uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach that emphasizes cognitive linguistics and CMT. Corpus analysis was conducted in two stages: 1) revealing the structure of metaphors based on classical rhetoric, and 2) mapping conceptual metaphors through source and target domains. The main findings indicate that the metaphorical verses in the Quran exhibit a systematic conceptual-cognitive structure. For example, the phrase “aqimu sh-shalah” is interpreted as a metaphor for prayer as a building of faith; the phrase “wa la tas’amu an taktubuhu” represents the documentation of the contract as legally binding; the phrase “libas” is interpreted as a metaphor for the marital relationship, which can be understood across cultures; the phrase “faqtho’u aydiyahuma” represents the elimination of criminal potential. This analysis reveals that kinayah not only serves a rhetorical function but also shapes the conceptual framework of legal understanding. The impact of this research confirms that integrating classical balaghah with CMT can broaden the scope of comprehensive Quranic studies interpretation.

Abstract

The Educational Value of Guntur Soeharjanto's Film "Ranah 3 Warna" and Its Use as a Novel Learning Approach in High SchoolThis study aims to analyze the representation of character education values in the film Ranah 3 Warna directed by Guntur Soeharjanto and its implementation in Indonesian language learning at the high school level. This research employs a qualitative approach with a content analysis method based on John Fiske's semiotic theory. The results reveal that character education values such as hard work, patience, responsibility, empathy, and patriotism are consistently represented through three levels of analysis: reality, representation, and ideology. Implementation in Indonesian language learning can be carried out through film screenings, critical discussions, analysis of intrinsic and extrinsic elements, and reflection on the character values embedded in the film. This study recommends the utilization of the Ranah 3 Warna film as an effective learning medium to enhance students' literacy competencies while fostering strong and integrity-based character development.

Abstract

In 2019, there were 63.022 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language in Victorian schools, Australia. They were facilitated by 263 Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) local teachers. Due to a shortage of BIPA local teachers, the Department of Education and Training Victoria had recruited language assistants from Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the required skillsets of BIPA language assistants to support their duties. The data were collected through interviews, an inventory, observations, and stories of eight Indonesian language assistants with one year of experience. The findings reveal that the language assistants need to develop bicultural, personality and pedagogical competences. These competences should become the reference for developing workshop materials for future BIPA language assistants.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of physics laboratory design in supporting the development of student creativity and character and identifying needs for improvement in the practicum context. Using a case study approach, the qualitative research method involved in-depth interviews and questionnaires with 100 Physics Education Study Programme students at Lambung Mangkurat University. The results showed that although the pre-lab activities and practicum guides received positive ratings, there were significant challenges in the relevance of the practicum to everyday life, practicum design that supports collaboration, and the development of creativity. Students felt the lab time and guidelines did not support creative and collaborative problem-solving. These findings indicate the need for a more open, problem-based laboratory design and better integration between technical aspects, creativity, and character education. This study recommends the development of laboratory modules that support problem-solving and collaborative approaches to improve students' skills holistically.
