Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem existence is important for environment and other organisms because of its ecological and economical values, so that management and preservation of mangrove ecosystem are needed. The purpose of this research was to determine the existing condition of mangrove, both its distribution and its functional transformation in Indah Kapuk Coastal Area. Avicennia marina  becomes important as wave attenuation,  a form of abrasion antidote. Transect-Square and Spot-Check methods were used to determine the existing condition of A.marina mangrove forests. Autocad program, coordinate converter, Google Earth, Google Map, and Arc View were applied in process of making mangrove distribution map. In western of research location exactly at Station 1 and Station 2, the density value of mangrove was 450 and 825 tree ha-1, respectively with  sparse category because they were contaminated by waste and litter. In eastern of research location namely Station 3, Station 4, and Station 5 the mangroves grow well with density value of 650 (sparse), 1,500 (very dense), and 1,200 tree ha-1 (fair), respectively, eventhough the contamination still happened. The mangrove forests around the stations do not function as wave attenuation because there were many waterfront constructions which have replaced the function of mangrove forests to damp the wave. In short, it can be stated that the mangrove's function has changed in a case of wave attenuation. The function of mangrove forests is not determined by mangrove forest density but it is determined by mangrove's free position.

Abstract

Residents of Raja Ampat, Papua, have been practicing sasi for generations to manage local marine resources. Recognizing its importance for marine resource conservation, efforts have been made to integrate sasi into current conservation management approach. This study was carried out with 3 objectives: (1) to define and elaborate sasi; (2) to examine the benefits of sasi for conservation of marine resources; and (3) to evaluate  the change of sasi  in the context of conservation. Multi-method approaches were employed to collect data from local communities in Dampier Strait District MPA in two separate sampling periods. Results indicated that sasi in Raja Ampat could generally be categorized into samson or kabus which basically reflect different aspects such as location, type of commodity, implementing ceremony, period of closure, the influence of monsoons, and communal ownership. The benefits identified included the increase in target fish production, the lowered level of exploitation, the improved recovery of fish stocks, and the increase in the local people's income. From the modern conservation management point of view, it was obvious that sasi could help protect and sustain marine biological resources. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate sasi into modern conservation management practices and vice versa.

Abstract

Overcoming the problem of resource management which relies only on social dimension without understanding the ecosystem dynamics will not be sufficient to create sustainable management. Therefore, socio-ecological system (SES) is needed to respond changes so that robust management could be created. Research on SES was focused more on capacity of governance in creating management of conservation area, particularly in the period where there were occurrence of resistance between social problem and ecosystem. Principal component analysis explained 76% of the total variability. Very high variable respond category occurred on first principal component (PC) with positive effect which was related directly to ecological condition, and negative effect toward catch yield and utilization of traditional zone. Condition of economy and fish resources contributed positively toward second PC, and can be expressed as factor which affected economic condition of fishermen household. Condition of fishermen, related with catching activity and income of fishermen household gave positive effect toward the third PC, and can be expressed as component which affected catching effort and explained exploitation level by fishermen toward resources. Interaction between factors which formed SES occurred due to economic activity of fishermen household, catching efforts, and ecological capacity. Design of governance could be conducted on increase of fishermen household economy through control of catching efforts and considering the carrying capacity and ecological capacity.

Abstract

Substrate has an important role for growing and surviving of seagrass as a medium of life and as a supplier of nutrients. Lack of attention towards seagrass is because of less information related to the seagrass ecology itself. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of substrate diameter with it’s density. The study was conducted in April in Bahoi coastal, North Minahasa District, North Sulawesi. This study measured water quality, substrate sampling were taken in the field. The result showed that 6 seagrass species: Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Halodule uninervis, Cymodecea rotundata, Syringodium isoetifolium, Halpohila ovalis, with good water quality and sand substrate types. This coastal area was dominated by small-sized seagrass. The highest density was found at station B with seagrass type was S. isoetifolium and lowest was at station C with E. acoroides and Sand substrate which had big diameter, type T. hemprichii had high density.

Abstract

Karimunjawa National Park was designated as a Marine National Park area since the enactment of Kepdirjen PHKA No. SK. 28/IV-SET/2012. The marine tourism utilization zone covers 2.45% of the total area of TNKJ. One of the great potential resources that is utilized in tourism utilization zone is coral reefs. Economic valuations of coral reefs are considered necessary as an approach to show the benefits of coral reef ecosystem management policy making and provide useful information for marine tourism development. Marine ecotourism activities in TNKJ are snorkeling and diving. To know the factors influencing marine ecotourism activity of TNKJ, the Travel Cost Method was used to presume the consumer surplus. This information is used as an input or consideration to manage the coral reef resources for marine ecotourism activity of TNKJ. Based on correlation and regression analysis, marine ecotourism demand is influenced by travel cost, age, education, income, gender, long trip, and distance. Marine snorkeling tourism are significantly (α=0,05) influenced by gender and duration of travel with coefficient values of -1,2325 and -0,1942. The demand model of snorkeling tours to travel cost is y = 11.831.242,4107x-7,8684 with consumer surplus of IDR94549/person. Diving marine tourism is significantly (α=0.05) influenced by travel cost, trip length, and distance with coefficient value of -1.23E-06, -0.0947, and 0.0033. The demand model to travel cost is y = 2.363.272,7634x-0,9236 with consumer surplus of IDR29254/person.
