Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited number of works that specifically examine the multidimensional influence of kyai leadership in pesantren, despite the extensive literature on leadership in Islamic educational institutions more broadly. It aims to analyze the role of kyai leadership in shaping educational processes, institutional management, and the spiritual–moral character development of santri within the pesantren environment. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving 12 informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and subsequently examined using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that kyai leadership is manifested in four main dimensions: spiritual leadership, moral guidance, institutional decision-making, and social–community relations. The kyai functions as a spiritual mentor, moral exemplar, strategic leader, and social mediator between the pesantren and the wider community. These results contribute to the development of Islamic leadership theory and deepen understanding of pesantren governance. The study concludes that integrative kyai leadership is crucial in determining the identity, sustainability, and educational effectiveness of pesantren. The recommendations include strengthening leadership regeneration, enhancing managerial capacity, and building collaborative networks, while future research may explore the transformation of leadership in modern pesantren and the adaptation of traditional authority within contemporary educational contexts.

Abstract

Research on the care and upbringing of santri in pesantren has been widely conducted, yet studies that systematically integrate the conceptual aspects of tarbiyah Islam, caregiving patterns, the role of musyrif, and caregiving challenges in the digital era remain limited. This study aims to analyze the concept and implementation of santri care in pesantren and to identify factors that influence the effectiveness of santri character development amid modern social dynamics. It employs a qualitative approach with a literature study design through the analysis of scholarly literature, pesantren documents, and previous research. The data were examined using thematic analysis to identify the main patterns of caregiving. The findings indicate that santri care in pesantren is a holistic guidance process encompassing spiritual, moral, and social dimensions, in which the role of the musyrif is highly strategic as mentor, supervisor, and role model for santri. Emerging challenges, including the penetration of digital technology, the heterogeneity of santri characteristics, and limited caregiver competencies, necessitate the adaptation of caregiving models that are more professional, humanistic, and contextually responsive. This study contributes to strengthening tarbiyah Islam theory and character education in the pesantren context, while providing practical implications for the development of caregiving policies that are responsive to contemporary change.

Abstract

This study examines the concepts, methods, and contemporary relevance of teaching classical kitab texts in Indonesian pesantren. Guided by three research questions—concerning the definition of kitab instruction, the methods used in the teaching process, and the challenges encountered in the modern era. The study aims to describe the practice of kitab teaching and analyse its position and continuity in the present context. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research finds that kitab instruction is a systematic process of guiding santri to understand authoritative texts through traditional methods such as bandongan, sorogan, and halaqah. These methods strengthen text comprehension, develop interpretive competence, and cultivate disciplined learning grounded in respect for teachers and scholarly traditions. The study also identifies several contemporary challenges, including digital distractions, shifting learning preferences, and the need for more adaptive pedagogical strategies. Nevertheless, kitab teaching remains relevant due to its integrative role in shaping the intellectual, spiritual, and moral character of santri, thereby reaffirming pesantren as a key pillar of Islamic education.

Abstract

Although the role of pesantren has been widely discussed in previous studies, research that specifically examines the role of pesantren in driving social change, particularly in Indonesia, remains limited. This study aims to analyze the role of pesantren in social change across historical periods, describe the core values of pesantren education, and explain the role of pesantren in social change in Indonesia. The study employs a qualitative approach with a library research design and descriptive analysis of various relevant literature sources. The findings show that pesantren actively promote social change in their surrounding communities through the internalization of foundational pesantren educational values that are not found in general schooling, particularly within the Indonesian pesantren context. These findings enrich analysis and broaden understanding of the role of pesantren in processes of social change, while also opening avenues for further exploration and critical examination of the role of pesantren and social change in the contemporary modern era.

Abstract

Pesantren, as the oldest and most distinctive Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, play a central role in shaping character, morals, and the preservation of Islamic values, yet in the midst of modernization and globalization they face various critical problems. This study aims to identify the main challenges faced by pesantren and other Islamic educational institutions, including limited resources (infrastructure, technology, and funding), the relevance of the curriculum in responding to labor market demands, and the need for more dynamic and adaptive educational methodologies. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach based on literature study, this analysis shows that pesantren are required to achieve a balance between the tradition of Kitab Kuning and modernity in the form of mastery of general sciences and technology. The suggested solutions include integrating a comprehensive curriculum that combines Islamic studies with mathematics, science, ICT, and languages; developing problem-based and interactive learning methodologies; and strengthening the economic self-reliance of pesantren. These adaptation efforts are crucial for enabling pesantren to maintain their scholarly identity while making a significant contribution to producing cadres who are mutafaqqih fiddin and competitive in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Anemia among adolescent girls remains a significant public health concern, impairing growth, learning, productivity, and reproductive health. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between iron supplement adherence, dietary intake, nutritional status, and anemia among 105 female students aged 12–15 years in Madiun Regency, Indonesia, using a total sampling approach. Data collection included anthropometric measurements, dietary intake assessed with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), hemoglobin levels measured by point-of-care testing, and iron supplement adherence, with anemia defined as hemoglobin <12 g/dL. The prevalence of anemia was 14.3%. While 88.6% of respondents adhered to iron supplements, non-adherence was associated with a 24.5-fold higher risk of anemia (p < 0.001). Most participants reported inadequate dietary intake, specifically in terms of energy (79.0%), protein (76.2%), zinc (62.9%), and iron (93.3%). Nutritional intake and BMI-based nutritional status showed no significant association with anemia, although non-chronic energy deficiency (non-KEK) was linked to a higher prevalence (p = 0.030). In conclusion, adherence to iron supplementation strongly protects against anemia; however, poor dietary quality remains a challenge. Therefore, strengthening supervised supplementation programs, improving school-based dietary quality, and implementing regular hemoglobin screening are recommended to reduce the risk of anemia among adolescent girls.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, nutritional status, and social interaction among the academic community at Polkesbaya Corner, a health-promotion facility developed by Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya as part of the “Healthy Campus Initiative.” Polkesbaya Corner serves as a campus-based innovation designed to integrate nutrition education, physical activity, and social engagement, supporting the 3rd Sustainable Development Goal (Good Health and Well-being). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 363 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), 24-hour dietary recall, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), anthropometric measurements, and sociometric observation. A statistical association was observed between social interaction and nutritional status (p = 0.024), whereas fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity were not significantly associated with this outcome. Overall, 52.3% of respondents had normal nutritional status, while 31.7% were overweight. Most participants performed light physical activity (79.3%) and consumed sautéed vegetables (74.1%) and sliced fruits (68.9%). These findings highlight the crucial role of social engagement in promoting healthy behaviors within the campus environment. Therefore, Polkesbaya Corner can serve as a “living laboratory” to foster a culture of health by integrating nutrition education, physical activity, and social participation—supporting the national health promotion agenda and the achievement of SDG 3.

Abstract

Matoa tree bark is a plant that contains flavonoid chemical compounds believed to be a traditional medicine in various alternative treatments. Therefore, it is important to measure its flavonoid content. Ethyl acetate extracts were prepared using the maceration method at durations of 3 x 24 hours. The aim of this study was to determine the flavonoid compound content and levels in matoa tree bark (Pometia pinnata) using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Qualitative analysis was carried out using NaOH reagent and the wilstater cyanidin test, both of which showed positive results for containing flavonoid compounds, indicated by an orange color change. Quantitative analysis using a regression quercetin standard curve with an R2 value of 0,9844 revealed a flavonoid content of 2.712%. These results indicate that matoa tree bark extract has a high flavonoid content and has the potential to be developed as a herbal medicine formulation.
