Abstract

AbstractInternational students were frequently reported of culture shock issues when entering a new cultural environment. Cultural knowledge was often treated as an addendum which focused on learning facts about the target country. This article demonstrated culture shock that experienced by 7 international students, and also reviewed intercultural communicative language teaching (ICLT) in Indonesian language classrooms practiced by 6 language practitioners from 3 different universities in China. Using findings that emerged from a series of one-to-one interviews, the research explored practitioners’ current perspective of ICLT and how these understandings influenced their practices, including teaching materials, methods, and activities. The researcher discussed the possible causes of the status quo of ICLT in China, and went on to put forward suggestions that ICLT should be promoted in foreign language teaching as a successful mediator of intercultural dimension.AbstrakMahasiswa internasional sering dilaporkan tentang masalah kejutan budaya ketika memasuki lingkungan budaya baru. Abstract

This study explored the pedagogical discourse of experienced Indonesian language teachers (in-service teachers) during the pre-teaching phase, focusing on the communication strategies used when initiating classroom learning activities because initial teacher-student interactions are crucial for shaping engagement and motivation. The qualitative research investigated how teachers designed their communication to create an effective learning environment based on the Learning Activity Framework. The study involved 20 in-service Indonesian language teachers, with data collected through classroom observations. The results revealed that teachers' communication patterns included engaging, focusing, contextualising, modeling, establishing expectations, and goal orientation cycles. Teachers applied two pedagogical communication strategies in each cycle to set learning goals, build interpersonal relationships, and activate students' prior knowledge. These strategies were also used to set expectations, manage classroom rules, and apply interactive questioning to encourage participation. Because teachers play cognitive and emotional roles, their initial communication significantly influences students' readiness and motivation. This study contributes to understanding pedagogical discourse in Indonesian classrooms and emphasises the importance of the pre-teaching phase as a foundation for effective teaching. The findings suggest the need for teacher professional development that emphasises reflective communication to support meaningful student engagement

Abstract

In Indonesia, understanding math story problems is often a challenge for many students, especially in connecting the information given in the problem with relevant mathematical concepts. This suggests a need to improve students' literacy in understanding mathematical story problems in order to better solve problems. Therefore, this study aims to analyse and describe the relationship between literacy in math word problems and fourth-grade students' problem-solving skills. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The variables studied were literacy in understanding math word problems as the independent variable and problem-solving ability as the dependent variable. The research sample consisted of 25 fourth-grade students from SD Negeri Pelandakan I. Purposive sampling was employed in this study. The research instruments utilised were observation sheets to assess students' reading literacy on math word problems and tests to assess fourth-grade students' problem-solving abilities. The findings of this study is based on the value of r_count and r_table, it is known that r_count ˃ r_table which shows that this study has proven a positive and significant correlation between literacy of math word problems with problem-solving skills of grade IV students of SDN Pelandakan I Cirebon. This is evidenced by the obtained r_count of 0.695. At a significance level of 1% (23), r_table is 0.413. The conclusion is concluded that enhanced literacy skills in reading math word problems correlate with improved problem-solving abilities among fourth-grade students, and conversely, reduced literacy skills align with diminished problem-solving abilities. The theoretical implication of the results of this study is that it confirms the belief in the importance of students' literacy skills and problem-solving abilities in addressing math word problems.

Abstract

Initial writing skills in elementary schools provide opportunities for students to build a solid foundation in writing. However, many students in elementary schools’ experience difficulties in developing initial writing skills, such as recognizing letters, forming words, and constructing coherent sentences. Lack of training and effective teaching leads to low student interest and motivation to learn to write. This study aims to analyze the role of teachers and parents in the success of teaching initial writing for second grade of elementary school students after doing online learning activities due to the covid-19 outbreak. This research was studied using a qualitative research method with a case study design. This research is based on primary data, namely second grade students and teachers, secondary data are field teachers who teach in second grade and vice principals of curriculum areas. Data collection technique used is interview (in-depth interview), observation and documentation. The data analysis technique used is Milles and Huberman which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. Data credibility was also tested by means of triangulation of data sources. The research findings reveal that the first thing that needs to be understood in preparation for initial writing is students' motor readiness by continuing to practice writing pens, such as making straight lines, curves, etc. Teacher and parent assistance is optimized through WhatsApp Group by sharing educational videos about learning to write early. Appropriate teaching also gets good results with the ability of second grade of elementary school students to write meaningful and legible letters.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between students’ dependence on the use of AI Chatbots for academic purposes and students’ ability to read academic text. The study was a correlational design on 39 students of the Indonesian Language Education Program a university in Indonesia. Dependence on the use of AI was assessed through a questionnaire; academic reading ability was measured through an essay test. The data were analyzed using SPSS with Pearson’s, with effect size (r) and significance (p) reported. The results showed that the participants had a moderate dependence on AI Chatbots (M=2,78; SD=0.64) and reading scores in the basic category (M=47,74; SD=16,67). A weak but significant negative correlation was found (r = -0,370; p = 0,020). These results prove that a higher dependence on AI use can be associated with reduced cognitive ability in reading academic texts. Although limited by a small sample and the scope of one university, this study offers preliminary evidence about the risks of using AI in language education, especially reading academic texts, which runs counter to the assumption that AI is universally beneficial. This study recommends large-scale research in various contexts.

Abstract

This research was conducted due to the importance of speaking strategies that advocates in court should possess. This study aims to describe the advocate’s speaking strategies in court, seen from the plea and exception drafts, and to see how they can be implemented in advocate professional education in Indonesia. The type of this research is qualitative descriptive using a descriptive analysis approach. The data are plea and exception drafts, notes, and court minutes. The data were collected through observation, interviews, recording, and collecting the the collection of plea and exception drafts. The validity of the data was assured by using semantic validity. The data was analyzed by reducing and presenting the data and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the speaking strategy used mainly by the advocate at the trial was straightforward speaking strategies with positive politeness pleasantries, which was 52.6%. Meanwhile, the lowest number of speaking strategies found in the draft were straightforward speaking strategies without any form of pleasantries, and it was 9.1%. Based on these data, the concept of a speaking strategy has been implemented, although there are still various obstacles and shortcomings. The challenges that arise include advances in technological development, mastery of the concept of speaking strategies, and digital-based learning components. Involvement and engagement with various elements are helpful for the advancement of professional training of prospective advocates in order to achieve the vision, mission, and expected goals.
