Abstract

Abstract. Foreign language learning in vocational tourism institutions, such as the Bali Tourism Polytechnic, still faces challenges in developing students’ communicative competence that is both contextual and functional. This study aims to describe the fundamental principles of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and to design an SFL-based German language learning model tailored to the professional communication needs of the tourism sector. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research was conducted through three main stages: a literature review, content analysis of authentic German tourism texts (e.g., hotel reservation dialogues, brochures, service emails, and spoken interactions), and the design of a learning model. The research instrument consisted of an SFL-based analytical grid covering ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions to identify how language is used in professional tourism contexts. The findings demonstrate that integrating SFL into learning enables students to produce oral and written texts that are more contextual, communicative, and professionally appropriate, such as handling hotel reservations, providing travel information, and responding to customer complaints. The novelty of this study lies in applying SFL to German language learning within vocational tourism education, a field that has received little attention compared to English. Its broader implication is that an SFL-based learning model can serve as a framework for developing foreign language curricula in vocational education that are more practical, adaptive, and aligned with the demands of the global tourism industry. Keywords: German, Systemic-Functional Linguistics, vocational learning, tourism, text genres

Abstract

Writing effective sentences is essential in academic writing, particularly in abstract sections which serve as the initial summary of a research work. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of sentences used in abstracts of undergraduate nursing students’ theses at ITEKES Bali. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the data consisted of 30 thesis abstracts from the 2024 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. The analysis was based on five criteria of effective sentences according to Ramlan (2005): unity, coherence, conciseness, accuracy, and logical structure. The results showed that out of 428 analyzed sentences, only 221 (51.6%) were considered effective, while 207 (48.4%) were ineffective. The most frequent issues were lack of coherence (28.5%), verbosity (21.7%), and weak sentence unity (18.4%). These findings indicate a significant gap between the expected academic writing standards and students' linguistic abilities. It also suggests a need for reinforced instruction on scientific writing and sentence construction in the academic curriculum. This research contributes to the development of targeted language teaching strategies to enhance the academic literacy of nursing students in higher education settings.

Abstract

This study aims to design an interactive teaching module based on structural linguistics intended for students of the Language Education study program. The background of this study is based on the need for learning media that is able to integrate structural linguistics theory contextually and applicatively in the language learning process. The method used in this study is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) development model. The developed module contains phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics materials that are systematically arranged with a structural approach, and are equipped with interactive features such as practice questions, learning videos, and language structure analysis simulations. The trial results show that this module is considered effective in improving students' understanding of the basic concepts of structural linguistics and is able to encourage independent learning. Thus, this teaching module can be an innovative alternative in supporting the mastery of structural linguistics theory and practice for prospective language educators.

Abstract

The low reading skills of students are an important problem that must be solved. This research aims to develop a storybook containing local Balinese wisdom based on flipbooks as an interactive and effective learning medium in improving cultural literacy and character education of elementary school students. This storybook is designed to integrate Balinese cultural values, such as tolerance, mutual cooperation, and harmonious relationship with nature, into engaging and meaningful learning. The flipbook  format was chosen for its ability to combine visual, audio, and interactive elements, which provides a more enjoyable learning experience compared to conventional media. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) development model. The results of validation by experts show that flipbook-based storybooks are of high quality in terms of content, visual design, and learning effectiveness. Implementation trials in elementary schools showed that students who learned using flipbook-based storybooks experienced significant improvements in material comprehension, learning motivation, and cultural literacy skills compared to students who used conventional learning methods. The results of this study confirm that flipbook-based storybooks are effective in supporting interactive learning, improving cultural literacy, and shaping students' characters. By integrating digital technology and local wisdom, this media provides innovative solutions that are relevant to the needs of education in the era of globalization

Abstract

Task-Based Learning (TBL) is a language teaching method that emphasizes providing graded tasks adjusted to learning abilities. This article aims to observe task-based learning (TBL) implementation in Japanese language training in the Japanese Language Center class. This TBL method is applied by giving pre-tests and post-tests to 35 students. There are 3 (three) tasks observed in this learning: vocabulary, context-based meaning, and simple language structures. The results show that implementing TBL is suitable for Japanese language center classes with diverse backgrounds in Japanese language ability. In addition, these tasks have structured and continuous characteristics so that the difficulty level will be controlled, which will make vocabulary mastery easier. The use of the Task-Based Learning method can improve student learning achievement. In this case, student achievement increased after implementing the Task-Based Learning method because this method excited students to learn to speak Japanese; this can be seen from the results of student responses. As many as 69.1% of students stated that they agreed and enjoyed learning using the task-based learning method, which made them interested in the lesson and no longer hesitant to speak Japanese. The application of the Task-Based Learning (TBL) method in the development of Japanese language teaching materials has been proven to have a significant positive impact on improving student communication skills, learning motivation, and the quality of teaching materials.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics in education is a complex and multidisciplinary field of study that explores the intricate relationship between language, society, and educational processes. It seeks to understand how social factors such as culture, class, ethnicity, and gender influence language use in educational settings, and conversely, how language practices shape social experiences within those contexts. This article aims to conduct a critical analysis of sociolinguistics in education by examining its fundamental concepts, key objects of study, methodological approaches, and the practical benefits it offers to educators and learners alike. Utilizing a critical analysis method, the article investigates how sociolinguistic insights can inform more inclusive, equitable, and effective teaching practices. It also highlights the importance of recognizing language variation and linguistic diversity in classrooms to promote better communication and understanding among students from different social backgrounds. Furthermore, the article underscores that sociolinguistics in education contributes not only to improved pedagogical strategies but also to broader educational policies that value multiculturalism and multilingualism. Ultimately, the study concludes that integrating sociolinguistic perspectives into education can significantly enhance the quality of learning and foster more socially responsive educational environments.
