Abstract

Task-Based Learning (TBL) is a language teaching method that emphasizes providing graded tasks adjusted to learning abilities. This article aims to observe task-based learning (TBL) implementation in Japanese language training in the Japanese Language Center class. This TBL method is applied by giving pre-tests and post-tests to 35 students. There are 3 (three) tasks observed in this learning: vocabulary, context-based meaning, and simple language structures. The results show that implementing TBL is suitable for Japanese language center classes with diverse backgrounds in Japanese language ability. In addition, these tasks have structured and continuous characteristics so that the difficulty level will be controlled, which will make vocabulary mastery easier. The use of the Task-Based Learning method can improve student learning achievement. In this case, student achievement increased after implementing the Task-Based Learning method because this method excited students to learn to speak Japanese; this can be seen from the results of student responses. As many as 69.1% of students stated that they agreed and enjoyed learning using the task-based learning method, which made them interested in the lesson and no longer hesitant to speak Japanese. The application of the Task-Based Learning (TBL) method in the development of Japanese language teaching materials has been proven to have a significant positive impact on improving student communication skills, learning motivation, and the quality of teaching materials.

Abstract

Formative assessment is used to monitor students’ learning progress on an ongoing basis and to provide constructive feedback for both teachers and students. In language learning, formative assessment functions as a means of evaluating the gradual process of language competence acquisition rather than merely the final learning outcomes. Therefore, item analysis is necessary to ensure the quality of the assessment instruments employed. This study aims to examine the quality of each test item in the formative assessment of the Balinese Language subject, particularly on the anggah-ungguhing basa Bali material. This research adopts a descriptive quantitative design, involving Grade X students from a senior high school in Denpasar City. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 36 students from class X3. The research data were collected through documentation studies of the assessment instruments and students’ responses. The data were then analyzed using validity tests, reliability tests, item difficulty indices, discrimination power indices, and distractor effectiveness analysis. The results indicate that 80% of the test items are valid, with a reliability coefficient of 0.632, which falls into the category of moderate reliability. Most items demonstrate a medium level of difficulty, accounting for 85% of the total items. Furthermore, 50% of the items exhibit optimal discrimination power, while the distractor effectiveness shows a performance rate of 72%. Overall, the formative assessment for the Balinese Language subject on the anggah-ungguhing basa Bali material meets the criteria of a high-quality assessment instrument. Nevertheless, several problematic items still require revision to enhance assessment accuracy in future implementations. This study offers a quantitative framework that can be utilized by other Balinese Language teachers as a reference for evaluating and improving test items, while also encouraging regular item analysis to enhance the effectiveness of assessment in Balinese language learning.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics in education is a complex and multidisciplinary field of study that explores the intricate relationship between language, society, and educational processes. It seeks to understand how social factors such as culture, class, ethnicity, and gender influence language use in educational settings, and conversely, how language practices shape social experiences within those contexts. This article aims to conduct a critical analysis of sociolinguistics in education by examining its fundamental concepts, key objects of study, methodological approaches, and the practical benefits it offers to educators and learners alike. Utilizing a critical analysis method, the article investigates how sociolinguistic insights can inform more inclusive, equitable, and effective teaching practices. It also highlights the importance of recognizing language variation and linguistic diversity in classrooms to promote better communication and understanding among students from different social backgrounds. Furthermore, the article underscores that sociolinguistics in education contributes not only to improved pedagogical strategies but also to broader educational policies that value multiculturalism and multilingualism. Ultimately, the study concludes that integrating sociolinguistic perspectives into education can significantly enhance the quality of learning and foster more socially responsive educational environments.

Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR) integration in vocabulary learning to improve students' motivation for English learning at UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto. The study employed a quantitative approach with a nonequivalent control-group quasi-experimental design. Two classes were selected as the experimental group (AR-based learning) and the control group (conventional learning), each receiving pre- and posttests. The intervention consisted of six sessions of AR object- or scene-exploration activities, vocabulary labelling, pronunciation audio, meaning exercises, and contextual tasks in the form of sentence construction and mini-dialogues. Primary data were collected using the ARCS model motivation questionnaire, which covers attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Supporting data, including class engagement observations and short student reflections, were used to strengthen the interpretation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, prerequisite and initial equivalence tests, and ANCOVA to assess the effect of treatment, with the pretest as a covariate, and included effect sizes. The results showed that the AR group had higher posttest motivation scores than the control group, particularly on the attention and relevance dimensions, and also reported greater confidence and satisfaction. These findings indicate that AR can make vocabulary learning more engaging and meaningful and facilitate successful learning experiences through multimodal scaffolding. The implications of this study emphasise the importance of purposeful task design, technical readiness, and classroom management to prevent AR from becoming a distraction. This study recommends the gradual implementation of AR for visually rich vocabulary themes and the use of formative evaluation to sustain learning motivation in higher education. Further research is recommended to examine medium-term vocabulary retention, to examine the roles of digital literacy and prior abilities as moderators, and to compare a more diverse set of blended and flipped models.

Abstract

ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS' ERRORS IN INTERPRETING CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATIONS IN CONTEMPORARY DIALOGUE TEXTS AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR PRAGMATIC LEARNING Abstract. This study aims to identify and analyze in depth the types of errors made by Indonesian Language Education students in interpreting conversational implicatures in contemporary dialogues. Implicature, as an implied meaning arising from the violation of Grice's Cooperative Principle, is not merely a theoretical concept, but a crucial competency that determines the success of authentic communication and is a primary prerequisite for prospective effective language teachers. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through the Conversational Implicature Interpretation Test (T-IIP) taken by 60 sixth-semester students. This test, consisting of 20 authentic dialogue items from social media, films, and interviews, was designed not only to measure interpretation skills, but also students' ability to identify violated maxims and provide contextual justification for their interpretations. The results showed a significant level of interpretation errors, amounting to 48.75% of the total 1,200 responses. The most dominant type of error occurred in the interpretation of the Maxim of Quality (58.33%), especially in irony and sarcasm, followed by errors in the Maxim of Relevance (55.00%). The root of these errors lies in a lack of contextual awareness (socio-pragmatic awareness) and a shallow understanding of pragmatic inference processes. The implications of these findings serve as a strong call for a reformulation of pragmatics learning, emphasizing the need for a paradigm shift from decontextualized theoretical approaches to authentic case-based analysis that focuses on sociopragmatic contexts, integrating contemporary dialogue and cooperative learning models to enhance students' pragmatic awareness.
