Abstract

The Youth Scientific Group (YSG) is an extracurricular activity that has a positive impact on students. Unfortunately, the presence of YSG in various schools, including SMAN 1 Tumpang, is still not optimal. In this high school located in Malang Regency, the YSG activities have not been carried out consistently. The scientific competence and research literacy of students at SMAN 1 Tumpang have not been fully utilized. In response to this issue, the aim of the Community Science and Technology Program (Community Service Program) is to enhance the scientific competence and literacy of students at SMAN 1 Tumpang through mentoring in the preparation of YSG. This Community Service Program consists of several stages, including observation and problem identification, preparation of YSG mentors, material presentation, training and mentoring, activity evaluation, and the preparation of scientific articles as program outputs. The average pretest score of the students' knowledge was 39.67, while the posttest score increased to 93.23. The average N-gain of their knowledge reached 0.836. Based on this N-gain value, the students' knowledge improvement is categorized as high. The paired t-test results indicate a significant difference in students' knowledge related to scientific work before (M = 39.7, SD = 20.6) and after the program (M = 93.2, SD = 7.5), t(30) = 14.6, p < .001. Therefore, the program implemented in the partner school has proven to be beneficial in enhancing students' scientific competence.

Abstract

Student’s collaboration skills are still low while this skill is important for students. The selection of an active learning model is an attempt to overcome this problem. This study aimed to investigate the effects of problem based learning (PBL) and integrated PBL digital mind maps (DMM) on university students’ collaboration skills. This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest control group design. The participants consisted of 103 students majoring in biology education from Riau, Indonesia. Each of the classes was randomly picked to act as the PBL group, integrated PBL-DMM group, and traditional group. The students’ collaboration skills were observed using an observation sheet which contained aspects of responsibility, respect, contribution, organize work and work as a whole team. The data obtained were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANACOVA) and least significance different (LSD) test. The ANACOVA results demonstrated some significant changes in both comparison groups: PBL and integrated PBL-DMM. In other word, learning models had an effect on students’ collaboration skills. However, the LSD test proved that both learning models were not significantly different in improving students’ collaboration skills, despite the fact that the students in the integrated PBL-DMM model class could perform better than those of PBL. Therefore, educators may either use PBL or integrated PBL-DMM in the classroom.

Abstract

Enhancement of students’ creativity and problem-solving is essential to science education. The learning accentuating students’ interaction to generate creative ideas becomes the ideal forum for developing those two skills. This study aims to amplify the current understanding of the effects of readingconcept mapping (Remap)–cooperative learning on college students’ creative and problem-solving skills. For cooperative learning, we used group investigation (GI). This study involved 60 college students from three Biology Education classes. Further, each class consists of 20 students with Remap-GI, GI, and conventional learning. The analysis results suggested that the creativity and problem-solving skills of students from all classes increased, with the most significant increase observed in students attending Remap-GI class which also presented substantial differences from the other two classes. In conclusion, GI presents positive effects in enhancing prospective teachers’ skills. However, an additional structured program (Remap) is still required to improve the future teachers’ contribution to their group.

Abstract

This study aims to improve and describe science process skills (SPS) and conceptual understanding (CU) college students through guided inquiry learning with Moodle (GI-Moodle). This quasi-experimental study used a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. College students taking general biology courses at Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FSTT), Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika (UNDIKMA) participated in this study. They were divided into three classes: the experiment, control 1, and control 2. Their SPS was measured using an essay test instrument containing 18 items, while the CU was examined using 50 items multiple choice test and 5 items essay test. The obtained data were analyzed using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test. The analysis results identified different average students’ SPS and CU before and after they attended the learning processes using GI-Moodle, guided inquiry with WhatsApp group (GI-WAG), and structured inquiry with WhatsApp group (SI-WAG). The experiment class attended learning using GI-Moodle presented a more significant increase of SPS and CU than the students attending the other two learning with GI-WAG and SI-WAG. Therefore, the GI with Moodle learning can be used to improve students’ SPS and CU during post COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, further studies are suggested to use a more number and broader participants and identify the influence of GI-Moodle on other variables.

Abstract

The correlation between students’ information communication technology (ICT) literacy and conceptual knowledge from a gender perspective is essential to understanding the causal effects of student learning. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the relationship between students’ ICT literacy and conceptual knowledge in a genetics course, especially from a gender perspective. This study employed a descriptive research method that used randomized sampling. The instruments used were conceptual knowledge and ICT literacy test sheets. The data were analyzed by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlational statistics. The results showed male students have higher ICT literacy than females. Otherwise, male students have a lower conceptual knowledge than females. Furthermore, male students’ ICT literacy and conceptual knowledge showed a strong relationship, while female students showed a weak relationship. The findings support the idea that integrating ICT into genetics curricula might help students develop their ICT literacy and conceptual knowledge more effectively, especially female students.

Abstract

An identification key is one of the tools used to determine the identity of a plant specimen. This research aims to design an identification key for M. crenata and analyze its potential as an identification tool. The research uses an observational descriptive method. The identification keys were designed for populations growing in aquatic floating, emergent, and terrestrial habitats. The key types designed are (1) short parallel, (2) long parallel, (3) numerical, (4) circular diagram, and (5) columnar diagram. The key characters are qualitative and quantitative, consisting of seven morphological and two anatomical characters. The potential of the identification keys was evaluated based on expert judgment regarding the quality and relevance of the keys as identification tools, accuracy, time, and assessment of student satisfaction. The data were analyzed quantitatively and descriptively. The reliability of expert judgment data was determined based on the percentage of agreement and Cronbach α, while the Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to analyze student assessment data and to determine the mean as well as SD of identification time. Student responses were processed in the form of percentages. The results of the expert assessment show that five key types have potential as a tool of identifying ferns diversity. Based on the effectiveness of key use and student assessment, numerical keys are the type that has the least potential, while short parallel keys have the best potential as a tool of identification. However, the five key types that have been developed can be used in learning to train students' identification skills.

Abstract

This paper answers the call for the importance of integrating the Islamic worldview into science classes. This research provides insights into science teachers' experiences of integrating science and Islam, as well as additional surveys to reveal gains in student understanding. This research consists of two stages. Study 1 used phenomenology and focused on the voice of science teachers through focus groups. This research involved five focus groups in five Islamic high schools providing information describing their experiences. Through thematic analysis techniques, several findings were obtained as follows: (1) the concept of integration emphasises more on the balance of compliance between vertical and horizontal; (2) the integration pattern places more emphasis on learning materials; and (3) in terms of benefits, this effort is focused on increasing understanding and followed by study 2 which aims to add to the evidence base by investigating the effect of integration patterns on student understanding. The results showed that there is evidence that the support of an overarching integration pattern contributes to students' understanding of the material. As a recommendation, it is necessary to strengthen integration at all stages of science learning, allowing students to take advantage of discussions in class to develop more relevant abilities.
